What are your Google Number 1's?

Written by Richard MacManus / August 27, 2004 9:32 AM / 4 Comments

Andrew left a great comment on my previous post about blog branding. I'd mentioned I was number 1 for the Google phrase "two way web blog". Andrew also informed me I'm the number 1 search result in Google for these phrases:

"microcontent wiki"
"fractal blogosphere"
"picked a fight with clay shirky"

I love that last one! Andrew's number 1 Google phrases are a crack-up too:

"absence makes the heart grow fonder blog"
"how to sleep with your eyes open blog"
"christian aerobics blog"

So I thought it would be fun to ask my readers - what is left of them ;-) - what Google search results are YOU number 1 in?

It's Friday where I am, so I'm in need of a bit of fun. Feel free to leave a comment (I don't bite).

  • Mine don't seem to be much fun: "block-level element implicitly closed," "script generator," "msn blog" (heh - okay, that's fun) "random blogs," "how many cows are in Texas," "blogger slut," and the ever popular "people named phil suck." Nice that to make up for all that, there's "all manner of things shall be well."

  • I think those are pretty fun :-) I esp like "how many cows are in Texas"! In fact I'm curious to know the answer to that, so I'll enter it into Google and find out ;-)

ps does anyone know an easy way to get your Google #1's info? Perhaps that's why people aren't commenting on this (well that and I'm not Kottke).

  • It is easy to fabricate Google #1 phrases - there are a whole bunch. For example, you show up as number one for:

    "clay shirky's fractal microcontent wiki"
    "two-way blog fiction"
    "kill blog"

    Via these simple techniques:

    1) Take existing words from different Google #1s and move them around/between each other, or add or more (since you're already #1 for microcontent wiki).
    2) Take words not expected to be together except on your blog (like "two-way" and "fiction").
    3) Take the title of a post you wrote that you think is highly unusual - possibly add "blog".

By combining the above techniques I can, for example, find myself with:

"absence makes christian aerobics grow fonder"
which by right should be mine, but your post (and my comment) wind up putting that up at top

    "memethics blog"

    "masculine exegesis"
this was why I named the category that to begin with....

    "religion rabbit exegesis blog gender"

So, as you can see, all manner of Google #1s are possible if you get inventive about it using the above techniques....

  • Sure but anyone can game a system... I was looking for 'natural' Google number 1's. Maybe there isn't such a thing.

Anyways, I came back in here to note this: I am (as of this writing) on page 1 if you do a search for "New Zealand Government" on Google. Totally natural and unintended. Now that's a bit freaky...
