John Battelle's posted details of the second Web 2.0 Conference, to be held in San Francisco on October 5-7. This is something I'd really really love to attend, but it's looking like the travel costs are going to be prohibitive - for a po' kiwi looking to become self-employed this year. Sometimes I really really hate living in New Zealand - no jobs, no conferences, no respect. Anyway, enough pissing and moaning :-) Here are the conference details:

"The program for the sophomore edition of Web 2.0 is inspired by the simple observation that while last year was all about declaring the web as a platform for new and innovative business models, this year it's all about showing what can be done on that platform, and uncovering the innovative companies, ideas, and models from which all of us can learn. I'm (loosley) focusing on three areas that are truly taking off in 2005: Media & Entertainment, Communications (ie, the Web goes mobile and swallows telecom along the way), and the Web as OS."

p.s. John's looking for input, so go and contact him.

Rich, New Zealand is not such a bad place to be you know... What's more, perhaps more so than might be possible in other places, you're standing out as someone in your own country well versed in (stompingly on top of) the so-called Web 2.0 scene. Travel distances and costs are a bummer, I know, but hopefully you'll be benefiting from the dollar/green back/Euro exchange rate once some work from the northern hemisphere wings its way to you. Keep up the good work I say.

Richard, you arebuilding a fair bit of credibility in Web 2.0 circles. I have a couple of suggestions:

1. You could look at it as an investment: meeting someone in person makes a big difference. While it's good to talk online to people overseas, having a face to face meeting could be the difference between you getting a big break or not.

2. Look for sponsorship to get there: contact past and potential advertisers. Contact the organisers and see if you can do a for-fee presentation at the conference that could cover your costs.

NZ is a long way away, but isolation has its benefits.
