It's going to be a busy
month or two for Microsoft, as the business launch of Windows Vista and Office 2007 is set for November 30 and there are a
number of complementary initiatives that will see the light of day soon. One is the Expression suite
of web design tools. Expression
Web is part of the suite and is a standards based Web Design tool, which will replace
Microsoft's staple WYSIWYG webpage editor Frontpage.

Expression Web is for building web pages, but there is another tool in the Expression product suite called Expression Interactive Designer; which is the designer environment for things like WPF (Windows Presentation
Foundation, from which the New York Times
Reader was developed) and WPF/E (a cross browser solution).

As part of the upcoming launch, I spoke to Leon Brown (responsible for the Expression
Tools Suite business throughout the Asia Pacific Region) and Ray Stephenson (a Regional
Manager) from Microsoft. Both are on their way to New Zealand next week to promote
Expression and other things - interested kiwis should check out this page for the
schedule.

Currently in
beta, Expression Web is a tool designed to complement the release of IE7 and Windows
Vista, as well as existing internet-enabled software such as Media Center and XBOX 360.
Although it will essentially replace Frontpage over time, Leon and Ray told me that
Expression Web is a complete re-write and is designed to be a true professional-level web
design product.

Probably the defining feature of Expression Web is that it enables standards based
design - so rather than dealing with proprietary Frontpage extensions, designers will be
able to more easily design standards-compliant websites. Also it handles CSS and XML much
better than Frontpage. Further details on the product
are here.

Also Leon and Ray told me that Expression Web will reduce the working gap between
designers (visual people) and developers (coders). Technologies such as Ajax in the web
2.0 era have intertwined the two disciplines in any case, so Microsoft hopes to make that
easier with this new product.

Expression Web will compete with existing web design tools such as Adobe's Dreamweaver and GoLive. In fact, Leon Brown used to work
at Adobe as a Senior Product Manager. So perhaps reflecting Adobe's relative dominance in
the web design tools market, Microsoft is squarely aiming at taking back some of that
mind share and business from Adobe.

There's more news coming soon about the Expression suite of tools, but in the meantime
Microsoft platform designers should check out this
page for the transition process from Frontpage to Expression Web. Frontpage itself
will be discontinued in late 2006.

"complete re-write" is a farce. It was built on top of Front Page. Anyone who's used Front Page will see that fairly quickly. In many ways it is a rip-off of what's good and bad in Dreamweaver: it copied the good features poorly and foolishly copied the bad ones.

To it's credit, it's tag selector is nice and better than DW's, and I'm sure it plays nice in the .NET ecosystem (is that an *open* standard?).

I downloaded the Expression web beta and I am fairly impressed by it. Microsoft have learned a few lessons from DreamWeaver, I am now waiting for DreamWeaver to catch and get some new ideas.

I do agree its completely built on Frontpage, incase you search for "Expression Web Templates", you will find a few sites which used to sell "Frontpage Templates" and have now made them Expression web compatible!

Over time, Adobe will emerge the winner on this one. Unless they go and slip up and make a huge mistake, that is.

There's no doubting Microsoft's spend when it comes to marketing, and how their marketing can overcome the insubstantial nature of the product their marketing is trying to push.

But when that marketing spend is pitched at a creative audience, especially one that is very much fond of Adobe and their tried-and-tested software, I don't see Microsoft having any kind of success in the strictly creative space in the short term.

And if the comments above are indicative of the thinking of the programmers who would make use of the development tools, then neither time nor tide are on Microsofts side right now.

However, the power struggle between Adobe and Microsoft is going to a fascinating spectacle.

This is something that began last year and I've been watching ever since.

It's also something I've had reason to run a 3-parter on, too!

EE is a great platform, just coming into its own in broader, general awareness. And this is a blatant ripoff of their trademark. For better or worse, they were there first ... they own the word 'Expression' in this space.

It's a classic case of causing reasonable people in the marketplace to be confused, which is the test the courts use to determine trademark infringement. Geez, there must be trademark attorneys out there who would drool to take this one on....

MS has proven it again! They don't know naming and branding from a rat's ass.

The quote about Expression Web being a re-write was mine (and my apologies to Richard for an incorrect statement). Post #3 from George Tucker is correct in that much was leveraged from FrontPage, but the teams have invested a great deal of time/effort/code in rewriting the application to become Expression Web. My apologies to all who read here for the original statement being misleading.

Thanks for all the comments to date on the beta by those who have tried it. We are working hard to make Expression Web valuable to those who use visual web design tools.
