OK so Jobs didn't use the word "ain't". But in a Newsweek
interview with Steven
Levy, Jobs put the kibosh on any talk about the iPhone opening up its
platform for third party developers:

‚ÄúYou don‚Äôt want your phone to be an open platform,‚Ä? meaning that
anyone can write applications for it and potentially gum up the provider's
network, says Jobs. “You need it to work when you need it to work. Cingular
doesn’t want to see their West Coast network go down because some
 application messed up.‚Ä?

Perhaps the most revealing quote is about the issue of mobile walled gardens
and how Jobs and Apple first approached
Cingular:

‚ÄúWe talked to several of them and educated ourselves,‚Ä? he says.
He finally decided to deal with AT&T’s Cingular network. “[They] were
willing to take a really big gamble on us. We decided what the phone is. We
decided what software would be on the phone. And so we could make the product
 we wanted.‚Ä?
(emphasis ours)

The bolded bits really sum up Apple's philosophy. Their products are closed
up tight, so that nobody can meddle with them. People weren't allowed to touch
the OS in Macintosh back in '84 and nowadays they can't even change the battery
in an iPod. The iPhone will be another product that locks out developers and any
meddling from users. As Nick Carr put
it: "In Jobs's world, users are users, creators are creators, and never
the twain shall meet."

And really, from a commercial and even artistic sense, Apple's philosophy is
a proven winner. So why change a winning formula? Of course all us web 2.0
zealots will continue to pine for an open platform, because we know that some
great innovation would happen over the long run that way. But it ain't gonna
happen.

And actually this is Microsoft's best opportunity to get ahead in their
battle with Apple over digital media - continue to provide the platforms for
external developers and content providers that Apple doesn't, and see what
flowers. Michael Gartenberg points
out that Cingular already allows this, with Windows Mobile and Palm OS
applications on smartphones.

Still, it's hard to bet against Jobs and the iPhone - it's just such a great
product...

I'm wondering how many people actually bother to purchase and install third-party software for their Windows Mobile devices? I do, but I'm not representative of the average user. WM comes with all the stuff most people will ever need, such a browser, applets to read and modify Office documents, media player, etc. What's the killer app for WM devices?

Microsoft screwed up the Windows Mobile concept rather badly in the versions before WM5 as well: they don't have persistent FLASH memory for application and data storage, so if your battery runs down, it's reinstallation time. (Yeah, you can work around this to some extent by backing up to memory cards, but still...)

I still have trouble believing that Apple could be this bone headed. What makes this device so exciting to a lot of us is that it is a brand new platform, that points the way for what computing will surely look like in a handful of years at most - nearly ubiquitous connection, with us all the time, able to connect directly to other local devices via wifi and bluetooth, a real OS. The potential in such a platform is literally unimaginable. But then they lock down some of the coolest tech ever harder than the PSP! Esentially turning all this effort into yet another GSM phone. Surely to goodness they can't be this stupid?

Now, you might argue that it worked well enough with the iPod - but you can play more or less any audio or video content you like (depending on the model you have) on the iPod. It's as if Apple had said you can only play music from particular bands on the ipod.

So, I simply think we *must* be parsing this wrongly. My hopeful guess is that when SJ says "We decided what the phone is. We decided what software would be on the phone. And so we could make the product we wanted" he means Apple. NOT Cingular. And he is not talking about the future, but the present. He is sying in effect "we are the deciders, not the service providers" which is revolutionary, at least the the US market.

Well, here's hoping anyway

(p.s. just lose the phone bit Apple! wifi and bluetooth is all we really need)

But in the end of the day, that might be more hassle than benefit.

I'm starting to sound like a curmudgeon, but ... The iPhone has dredged up the same feelings I had when Apple introduced the Newton. I can't quite put my finger on why. Palm eventually got it right. Maybe it's the "brick" form-factor, maybe it's the gesturing for input, maybe it's the GSM-only restriction (in the US anyway). Going up against Motorola, LG, Samsung, Nokia, Sony, Kyocera, etc., with no CDMA offering, wow. I won't go so far as to bet against it, but I do have my doubts.

Still, it's hard to bet against Jobs and the iPhone - it's just such a great product...

Wow, I love the benefit of the doubt this phone is getting. We've all decided it's a great product, yet no one has really used it.

I guess perception is reality. If Bill Gates came out with a similar stance about a closed platform we'd all be ranting about how evil he was.

I agree that being a closed platform could be a real problem for the iphone, at least giving an 'open platform' competitor an advantage. But surely that doesn't matter as far as this website is concerned: The phone has a browser on it so it will run any (web) application we want. Isn't that the big advantage that all the applications written about here have?

Apple's "closed platform" approach has been limited to their hardware products till now.

Closing the software platform to developers is a huge switch. Reflective of the economics of the mobile device, IMO. They don't need 3rd party developers to sell the phone.

HIstorically Apple & NeXT needed developers to sell more product.

OK, so generally I'm hoping (and giving some benefit of doubt) that Jobs was talking about Cingular's powerhold, not Apple's. I've also seen him quoted about others building apps for the phone too.

The funny thing is that if the iPhone goes well AND apps are allows to be added to the phone, Apple has a real reason to think that the Mac platform could blow up.

After all, if the iPhone is successful and developers have a reason to switch from Windows programming to mac programming, imagine the world of application development that opens up! And through that, less and less reasons to think "I have to stick with PC becaus of X application, or because i understand the PC metaphor".

Here's hoping....

iPhone is available with Cingular ONLY!? And what if I am stuck under contract with a carrier OTHER than Cingular but still want a iPhone?
Well, the only solution I could fine was http://www.Cellswapper.com - they get you out of any cell phone contract!
