With the attention-grabbing headling Social Networking Goes Global, comScore has released its latest stats on the large social network sites. According to comScore, MySpace is over twice as large as its nearest rival, Facebook. Both Facebook and Bebo have had extraordinary growth over the past year (270% and 172% respectively):

These are interesting stats which show that a) MySpace is still King; and b) Facebook is worthy of the attention it's getting.

The fineprint on the above table revealed that comScore only selected sites "from among those with at least 10 million visitors worldwide, 50 percent growth during the past year, and of particular significance to the North American region" (emphasis ours). On the latter point I can understand why, because comScore states that "both MySpace.com (62 percent) and Facebook.com (68 percent) attract approximately two-thirds of their respective audiences from North America."

Even so, what I'm more interested in seeing is stats on the top social networks in all the major countries, e.g. China, UK, Germany, etc - whether or not they are significant to the North American region.

For example, I asked Gang Lu (an occasional R/WW writer) what is the number 1 social network in China. He wasn't certain, but told me that QQ would have the largest numbers - although it's not exactly like MySpace or Facebook. QQ is a top 10 web property in Alexa and is the leading provider of Internet, mobile & telecommunications value-added services in China. Gang Lu wrote a post for Read/WriteWeb in Feburary about QQ, noting that is has half a billion registered users.

MySpace also has a Chinese version, which incidentally has a much cleaner design than its english language equivalent!

Anyone have some more details on what the top social networks are all over the world?

First of all I don't have any details on "social networks around the world" because there really don't seem to be any truly global social networks...

... see, I live en Denmark, Europe, and sure, we have our own stuff here, but that really doesn't matter on greater scope of things. There aren't even any big European networks with the scope etc. of lets say Facebook. So naturally you look to the US if you want to be part of something bigger on the web.

But as a European of cause it's frustrating you always have to turn to US-orientated networks and services. Cause thats what they are: MySpace, Facebook, Wordpress.com, even YouTube, Twitter etc.; they're US-orientated. They're made in America to serve the Americans. It usually takes quite a long time before a l18n/l10n-project gets started. And thats pretty sad, because by that time the hype is over.

It's really scary that almost nobody I know have ever heard of Twitter and flickr...! And they're not dumb; they just live in a country that don't speak English.

I've been talking to some start-up folks recently and asked when they'd be taking their site "global". I think one thing people don't realize is the pure cost involved in doing so.

a) translation - you'd be lucky if you could find someone who would translate it free or very low cost. Say you pick some of the top languages and go for that, say Chinese, Hindi, German, French, Spanish and Portuguese (just for argument's sake, none are better than the others). First, how can you really tell if you have a decent translation if you don't speak the language? Second, there may be costs involved and is your funder of CFO going to allow you to justify your limited funds for such efforts?

b) cultural differences - let alone factors of Hebrew and Chinese and other Asian characters reading differently and transposing on the screen, localization is not something that is an immediate benefit to a start-up that needs to get launched asap, esp in the volatile market where a few months can make or break the launch, there are differences of culture such as UPS's issue with showing a woman with a short sleeved shirt - didn't go over too well in the Arabic countries.

c) marketing in the areas that speak those languages. Again leaving out the pure cost factor of marketing itself, how do you even know what the marketing market is like there, how do you measure it, is it worth taking the risk with your limited funds to take the risk?

d) interaction between languages - will the sites interact? If I don't speak German or Spanish, and others vice versa, I will probably have little to no interaction with them. Thus creating basically silos within the network with language as the barrier. We know on the fly translation softwares are still pretty crappy.

Remember, we're talking about companies without huge marketing budgets. Now maybe MySpace (now) and some of the funded companies may have some marketing budget to put aside for this, but they probably weren't thinking too much about localization when they built their original systems, so chnages will probably have to be made.

So what's the solution? Most go for where they know and can reach the market best.

Regarding Germany: MySpace says that they have about 4 million users here (with no more details about their activity). The German Facebook clone studiVZ.net has around 3 million active users which makes it probably the biggest social network in Germany if you consider active users. Xing as a business network has more than 2,5 million users whereof most are from the German speaking area. Another quite big network is lokalisten.de with about 1 million registered users.
