In May of last year, Sonic Mountain bought the assets of Evan William's podcast directory Odeo (and then promptly renamed itself Odeo). In September, the new company bought out its chief rival, FireAnt, for about $400,000. The company planned to launch in December a public beta of its new software that merged Odeo's podcasting tools with FireAnt's desktop media player (which aggregated video blog feeds). Odeo obviously missed that date, but company COO Eric Rupert says that he expects the new Odeo "to be released for a more 'open' beta sometime at the beginning of Feb."

Rupert spoke to the Voice Over Times blog and indicated that the new Odeo will also include an embedded browser and will help people find, play, and store media content (audio and video podcasts).

"It’s a client for subscribing to, watching and listening to podcasts which can also transcode the content and sync it with a number of portable devices including smartphones," Rupert told Voice Over Times. The ability to sync with a wide range of portable devices was always one of FireAnt's most attractive features. Judging by the screenshot (above), the new Odeo media browser is based directly on the FireAnt software. While it is hard to tell from just a screenshot, to my eyes it looks nearly identical to the last iteration of FireAnt.

The relaunch positions Odeo to compete with companies like Veoh and their VeohTV service and Mefeedia. FireAnt's player has always been very slick, and Odeo still has name recognition as one of the first podcast authorities, so combining the two in the way Odeo plans makes sense. Can Odeo make a comeback? We'll begin to find out next month.

I think the question is can FireAnt make a comeback? It was terrible, they had been saying they are going to have a beta version of 2.0 for over a year! In the mean time they took down the old version, while trying to hype up the new one (but not very well).

Meanwhile, other media players have come into the stage, namely Miro, and such video podcast clients have become more prominent. FireAnt v1 was there in the beginning, but they threw that all away when they took it down while telling us v2 will be out "soon".

For some odd reason, I truly feel sorry for these folks.
I read the blogs and they do not sound like nice people between the Sivault $47m losses and the manslaughter drunk driving charges. Oh well, a nice usuable application would help!

Since they bought Odeo, all I hear about them are their lawsuits or not paying contracts to start ups who did work for them.
The truth is Odeo has not changed in over a year and this has caused their traffic to drop two thirds. Fireant has had their woes also, that is on every comment section (including this one)every time I read about them.

It all feels so 2005/2006ish... They need to develop something new! Why would one dying podcast aggregator with audio, join up with another nearly dead video aggregator and expect anything?

Who is their leader? They should make an announcement from someone who has vision, not an operations guy, their non-existent felon CEO or Kineberg? do some good with what you have and try to get a useable app....new paint is so cheap and it will never work this time.

Fireant and Mefeedia used to work very closely together in the early days of videoblogging (2004/2005). Since then, we have integrated more closely with Miro and iTunes. I hope they finally decide to open source Fireant. Until then, Mefeedia + Miro makes a very powerful combination to find, collect, and watch videos and listen to audio podcasts.

It's just software, folks...

FireAnt was a *very* small software team, no VC capital was ever raised. Odeo raised VC, then bought it back and sold it off because they wanted to work on Twitter. Then some new folks decided to work on Odeo + FireAnt together. I've been a member of the private beta team since November.

Yes, it's a lot of work. Odeo announced a private beta invite in December and is working in an iterative development process. Odeo has a brand new Rails website in development and the Odeo Media Player (FireAnt) is integrating some new features to work in tandem with the new Odeo site.

Right now, it's just a small group of testers and software developers and a few folks who've been invited in to QA. Software development is what it is, especially working with iterations, testing and getting feedback.

So, what's the point in pissing on FireAnt and Odeo?

First, if you like Miro, that's great. As Frank said above, MeFeedia is doing really cool stuff, too. I'm also a big fan of Mefeedia. In fact, it's just a matter of choice. When Odeo is released, then you can try it. If you like it great. If not, then there are plenty of options. Open Source? Miro's got it covered. Apple? Grab your iTunes. More into Music? Try Song Bird. NBC shows? Hulu's your place.

My only guess on the super negative comments it that appears to be the same ex-salesguys who feel the need to post @sshole comments and cyberstalk endlessly because they didn't get rich quick on other people's ideas. So sorry.

@sallybenny Great salesmanship. Your mean-spirited nature is really something to be proud of.

Maybe it's time to really name names? This type of cyberstalking behavior may be a great case study for Stanford Business School or for Bob Sutton, author of the "No @sshole Rule."

http://tinyurl.com/36jufq

I'm sure folks would be very interested to know that a couple of failed salesguys in their late 40's have nothing better to do than be anonymous @ssholes online.

Again, it's just software... and this comment bullying and B.S. behavior is just plain stupid.

That being said, Odeo is humming along nicely and looks forward to getting feedback once the new stuff is released.

> #6 It's just software folks...

This post makes me wonder if it's Odeo's policy to allow members of their private beta testing team to publicly disclose the progress of on-going beta testing, because one would think that private beta testing would include a pretty strict confidentiality agreement.

One also has to wonder from this post if Odeo is in the business of spreading defaming information on the corporate character of previous company employees, and if this information is somehow included as part of the private beta testing program? This seems really odd to me.

Anyway, if I were Odeo I would be very careful on who I pick to beta test software, to make sure to enforce confidentiality agreements with private beta testers, and mostly to make sure to avoid protracted and nasty litigation from any number of defamation cases that could arise from these people making ridiculous statements such as what was written above.

Good luck on finishing your software!
