P2P, or peer-to-peer, is the protocol currently used by many file sharing networks for moving large files over the internet. Now, a new protocol, P4P - aka Proactive network Provider Participation for P2P - is being introduced by Verizon. P4P's goal is to reduce backbone traffic and lower network operation costs. Will P4P bring us the bandwidth we've been waiting for?

Unlike P2P, which selects random peers to share with, when using P4P the peers are intelligently selected as the protocol utilizes network topology data to maximize the efficiency of routing between the peer-to-peer connections.

Verizon just tested P4P with Pando and received performance boosts of 200 percent on average and increases of up to 600 percent in some cases.

What's most remarkable about this story is that Verizon is looking towards working with P2P traffic instead of throttling it like Comcast has been doing lately.

At an upcoming conference in New York, Verizon will present their test results, which show that when an ISP cooperates with file-sharing, they can speed downloads an average of 60 percent.

"This test signifies a turning point in the history of peer-to-peer technology and ISPs," said Robert Levitan, chief executive of Pando Networks Inc. "It will definitely show ISPs that the problem is not peer-to-peer technology, the problem is how you deploy it. It is possible to deploy P2P to their advantage. The Internet is quickly transforming into a media distribution platform, and there are people who say: 'It will break. It's not built to move music and movies and games and software.' New technologies are needed, and this is one of those technologies."

The P4P protocol may even be ready by next month, when NBC begins offering HD downloads of popular TV shows via the Pando software.

For the record, though, P2P isn't a protocol -- although Gnuttella is a P2P protocol, and said 'P4P' is a P2P protocol. Hate to be a stickler, but technology related blogs have to be on the nail about this kind of thing, otherwise the misinformation just gets perpetuated.

This is a great article.

To clarify one point, P4P doesn't replace P2P - it's a protocol for allowing ISP's to provide guidance to P2P companies so that the P2P systems can operate on their networks more efficiently. All of the major P2P networks are in the P4P Working Group. There's more information on P4P at http://www.pandonetworks.com/p4p and http://www.dcia.info/activities.

Participation in the P4P Working Group is free and open to all ISP's and P2P companies and researchers, and you can contact us for more information at these email addresses:

"Unlike P2P, which selects random peers to share with [...]"

This is misleading. BitTorrent, for example, starts with a random set of peers, but then prefers peers that deliver better bandwidth (that's what "tit for tat" is all about). P4P isn't selecting peers that perform better at all, it's selecting peers that cost Verizon less. Overall bandwidth performance is the only relevant metric here -- hops are more about Verizon's costs than your bandwidth.

The touted "performance boosts of 200 percent on average and increases of up to 600 percent in some cases" occurred because peers were selected from within Verizon's high-speed Fios network. That's selecting faster peers a priori in a way that only works if you happen to be a customer of a higher-speed service. (If you could identify Fios peers, it would boost performance similarly for any peer on any ISPs to prefer them, regardless of how far away they are.) Customers of lower-speed services would find their P4P programs preferring slower-than-average peers, and the average customer would find her P4P programs preferring average peers.

Figuring out the effects on the network overall is complicated, but so far Verizon hasn't released any information about that.
