If you don't want to go through the whole process of creating a tumblr blog just to save and share interesting photos and videos you find on the web, then you may be interested in the new social bookmarking tool from We Heart It instead. We Heart It is very similar to another photo sharing and bookmarking service - FFFFOUND - right down to the heart-shaped favicon - but unlike FFFFOUND, you don't need an invitation to join.

In fact, it almost looks like We Heart It was created by someone who was tired of waiting for FFFFOUND to open up and thought, "I'll just build my own...and I'll make it better, too!"

As with FFFFOUND, items are tagged as being liked via a browser bookmarklet (which does not work in IE, by the way). However, where FFFFOUND focuses only on image bookmarking, We Heart IT allows you to mark videos from Vimeo or YouTube as well.

After you "heart" a video or picture, you can then tag it with keywords and even leave comments about why you liked it - features that FFFOUND does not offer. Images can be marked as "unsafe" and you can choose in your settings whether or not you want to see the more risque images.

Although at first, We Heart It did not display related images like FFFFOUND did, they recently added this feature which allows you find "similar entries" based on that photo's tags. However, unlike FFFFOUND, these related images do not display on the homepage and are only available if you click "Explore" to access the page for the picture that you are viewing. Even then, not all images seem to have related items, whereas at FFFFOUND, they all do. This is because We Heart It finds related items by their tags, where FFFFOUND sources words from the web site where the picture was saved from to give you its suggestions.

The images you tag at We Heart It are saved on a page called "my heart", which has its own RSS feed. This way, as you find people whose saved images you like, you'll be able to subscribe to their latest additions.

We Heart It offers a simple service but they do it well, so if you're also tired of waiting for your FFFFOUND invite, you may want to give them a shot.

Hello,

I'm the creator of weheartit and I'd like to thank RWW for this post!

I really like ffffound, because I like beautiful images, but I also like beautiful, open and easy to use websites.

The fact that ffffound is invitation-only makes it more like an editorial site than a social bookmark. We believe that people should be free to join and use the site as they want.

Some people who's already got an invitation like the fact that it's closed because this process helps to keep the quality level. But on weheartit you can set things as unsafe, you can add people you like as contacts and see only what they've 'heart', you can search things... All of that make it really easy to see only great images and videos, you don't have to see everything that's on weheartit if you don't want.

You can read more about weheartit at http://blog.weheartit.com
Leave comments there with your love/hate messages, suggestions, doubts... I'll answer them all =)

We're really open and we want to make the best visual experience for you.

Thanks!

AGREED X10

I am also a heavy ffffound user (and graphic designer), though I am NOT a ffffound member but, coincidentally enough, I too love that its access is limited to an invite-only basis! That is the ONLY reason you don't have to sift through piles of shit images just to discover a few jems, like on the other two ffffound imitation sites (though lately there has been a noticeable wash of useless porn and LOLCATS images clearly added by unworthy dipshits who, by some strike of (un)luck, managed to score themselves invites -their inviters should be banned for allowing pollution to the site IMO).
Also, the option for adding comments defeats the whole purpose of ffffound. Who cares why someone marked the image they marked? So users can turn it into a popularity contest by personalizing each image with some super-witty/super-dumb message that only serves as a useless distraction to the voice of the bare image itself? No thanks.
I haven't been able to find an invite for myself yet, but that hasn't stopped me from using ffffound every single day...only makes it much more tedious for me, and I don't get the chance to have suggestions upon my own finds, but....what can ya do? I hope to jebus I get one soon...

until then, i've got my tumbler and my limited tedious ffffound usage.

to #12 by Martin: i prefer the weheartit interface over the one by vi.sualize.us (yours?). and who cares if it seems a bit like an amateur/friends website?

i am getting tired of all the glossy pseudo-enterpriseness, your arrogant 'amateur' comment just made it even worse. and i like those new sites like ffffound, weheartit, several closed very customized forums, etc. a lot. feels much better than the 1000th 'web2.0 app'.

i'd rather feel comfortable in a community and see a few things being rough on the edges or even break every now and then (after all, the site is just like a fancy photo album, nothing critical) instead of feeling on my own and like an alien in the shiny glossy enterprise world.

just my thoughts.
