Facebook and MySpace have replaced email for a substantial number of young people. Facebook, though, appears to believe that some things are better off not discussed in conversations between its members.

We've found two instances of words that will get a Facebook message blocked and we presume there are others. The company says it's spam control, but it seems creepy to us.

If you ever get the itch to use the word "yuwie" or perhaps make reference to "wadja.com" - don't bother. "Some of the content you included in this message is not allowed by Facebook," is the message you'll get in response. Both of the above are small social networks, but you can't even send a message about how something disgusting (like yuwie.com's site design) made you say "yuwie, that smells bad!" On principle, the whole thing stinks.

Obscenity isn't blocked by Facebook, I was able to send a message that said "John McCain is a f*cking Nazi" (asterisk free) with no problem.

The "pro-white" message board American Rennaisance News complains though, that links to their site couldn't be sent in messages last month. That's no longer the case today and you are now free to send links to their disgusting content around Facebook however you please.

Facebook's Reply

What does Facebook have to say? "That domain has been blocked from the site," Director of Communications Brandee Barker told us about Wadja.com. "Facebook has measures in place to protect users from spam and other unwanted contact. When we detect that certain content is being used to spam or harass, as in this case, we may block it so that it can no longer be posted or sent."

Wadja certainly isn't shy about leaving comments on any blog post they can find about mobile social networks and the company felt compelled to issue a press release last month about new steps it was taking to protect its own users from spam. The site has received a number of good reviews from reputable mobile industry blogs, though.

The only other mention on the entire web we can find of Wadja having spam problems is a lone Tweet from a nice Greek man who complains that "Το Wadja αντιμετωπίζει πολά προβλήματα με το spam - πολλά μηνύματα στο email μου από δήθεν κορίτσια που ενδιαφέρονται..." - or "The Wadja pola facing problems with spam - many messages in my email supposedly from girls who are interested ..." How different is that from MySpace until just a few months ago?

American Renaissance News apparently got itself unblocked somehow in the last month. What's the avenue of appeal at Facebook for a blocked domain? What constitutes harassment? I was able to say "plaxo.com" no problem - might there have been a time when I couldn't and how did that happen?

It appears that Facebook is doing what any spam filter might do, but there's no visible way for spam to be seen by recipients or to train the spam filter. Doesn't this seem awfully arbitrary?

Should my friends and I not be allowed to discuss repugnant political views or spammy social networks or things that are "yuwie" on Facebook?

So much public communication now goes on through these privately owned channels that if free speech is going to mean much in the future there is going to need to be at least some transparency around decision making by the major social networking platforms.

Why This is Important

Should users be subject to Facebook's fickle free speech standards? While the company is engaging in heated discussions about data portability, a solid foundation in support for free speech seems a prerequisite for being taken seriously. For a company that speaks so loudly about the importance of user privacy to check the text of messages between its members and block content for arbitrary reasons seems pretty...yuwie if you ask me.

Perhaps users appreciate this kind of control by Facebook, though, and would rather some random fringe groups get any mention of their names blocked than run the risk of getting unwanted messages.

We weren't able to send the text of the message above to friends on Facebook either - until we put asterisks in for vowels in the words yuwie and wadja.com. We were able to post the contents on this post as a note in Facebook, no problem. It all seems pretty arbitrary and that's not an appropriate tone for a communications platform.

Interesting, yet predictable developments at Facebook. We've just switched out community's FB group to a fan page, as we had numerous 'spam' issues with the group. Hopefully less so with the fan page.

There wasn't any information forthcoming on how our messages to the group constituted spam - we used it less than once/week for relevant messages.

Ironically, I'd recently been describing FB's groups/fan pages as an email equivalent without the hassle of spam filters, grey listing, black listing, tar pitting and all the other hassles that are the bane of an email marketer's life these days.

FB face a very difficult situation, like most of the filtering industry, they can't be transparent about their methods without encouraging gaming of the system.

However, they could learn from the large ISPs who have been tackling this issue for years now, by providing clear guidelines, feedback loops (if someone complains a message is spam, they get taken off the group immediately, a kind of instant unsubscribe) and reputation management.

I'd predict it's only a matter of time before a 'spam' box turns up alongside Inbox. Whilst I don't want FB filtering, it's inevitable with the volume of messaging traffic that there'll be a decent proportion of abuse even with a fully registered userbase. Just look at the hoops the webmail providers have had to jump through.

It'd also be handy to get a better understanding, from a business/organisation perspective of what a group is used for versus a fan page. Or maybe, they've done that and I've missed it ;-)

Here is the deal, Facebook is simply evil in all they do. I think they have shown time and time again that they will sell out their users for a quick buck (and they still cannot make money...LOSERS!). The funny part is that they are trying so hard to lock down their service and create a walled garden, but this is the internet fellas...it can't be done!

Lets not censor the word F*&^K nazi but lets censor the word wadja.com...what a joke. I think Facebook is just scared of competition, free speech and open standards. Hey didn't these guys just block Google Friend Connect last week. What a bunch of jerks! Saying that you are a Facebook user is becoming synonymous with saying you're an idiot. I think it is time to move on everyone, next social network please!!!

I've been using Wadja.com for the past 3 months. I am a linkedin user (and love it!) and was using facebook, but I was eventually disgusted by all that SPAM and deleted my account.
Wadja not only gives me free useful stuff (global sms for example), something facebook does not, but in my opinion they have the only spam proof system around. I mean I get all my gmail and yahoo mail only from friends I choose directly to my wadja Inbox. My privacy in wadja is set to "Friends", so only my buddies can send me a message.
In my mind, facebook equals spam. A spammer practicing spam control..that's rich!

It seems Facebook is being selective as to what is filtered and censored. Apparently they have discrimination issues. Should I expect that they would deactivate my account if I was of a different ethnicity, color, race or religion? It begins with a few words and then gets worse.

Anyway, as far as wadja.com is concerned I would like to inform you that we have one of the best spam free platforms based on friend to friend messages. Yahoo, Gmail and other contacts can be synched in order to give the Wadja user a spam free experience, receiving outside email only from trusted friends.

Wadja.com promotes open communication and is in favor of data portability issues. We strongly support Data Availability, Google Friend Connect and other initiatives to give users choices and freedom. We work hard to bridge communication gaps between devices and platforms and we do not restrict messages within walled gardens.

Finally, at the end of the day we cannot understand why did Facebook blocked us. How can a social network spam another social network?

Food for thought!

Thank you

PS: As far as the Greek quote is concerned, all that I can say is that this comes from a small local site looking to get some press.

Yikes, can you imagine what it's like in China where every word is screened for sensitive topics? Falun Gong is violently persecuted, so you can't mention it, the Tiananmen massacre was a display of the gov'ts fear of peoples rights and so you can't discuss it, this list of forbidden subjects is long and it is so unfair.

My blog is about dissident movement for change and justice, I just posted an article about CISCO and how they sell technology to the communist party that they know very well is used to control peoples minds.

Google searches in China cater to the CCP's censorship "laws" and yahoo has gotten in big trouble in the States for collaborating with the dictatorship in China by giving personal info of online dissidents who are now tortured in forced labour camps or jails in China.

I'm so lucky I am not in China and that there are still some safety spots...Otherwise my blog would have me thrown into jail or worse.

Are there any ethics when you abolish in such a way your competition at country such as the USA?
how can we accuse as democracies countries that control free messaging and ideas when we do not?
Our responsibility as FREE nations is great!
Internet must remain a way of free traffic of ideas and words (within a lawful and ethical manner). Other wise we are taking a dark and dangerous path.

I fully agree that social networking platforms are powerful forces in our culture, but the merging of that fact with the political ideal of free speech seems unworkable.

Better handling? Sure. Transparency, why not? But I think it severely damages the conversation to try and make this a political rights issue and not one about the ongoing mediation of the relationship between a community and the provider that makes the space for that community happen.

I don't know about the other one, but Yuwie is a Social Network that pays people to get page-views and to get other members to register. This caused a bunch of pyramid-scheme/chain-letter type spam on Facebook for a while. Friends were inviting all of their other friends to join, and spamming every group they could find. That seems to be legitimately annoying and ubiquitous spam and I personally feel it's helpful to have them filtered out.

It'll be interesting to see how far they go with the filtering though - it's a tough game to play. MySpace did similar things and then banned/un-banned a number of other sites (including YouTube) and in the end appeared to have done a great deal of damage to them. Keep us informed if you find more sites filtered! :)
