UPDATED! Poll: Which Instant Messaging Client(s) Do You Use?

Due to demand in the comments, 3 new IM clients have been added to the poll. You can now vote for Pidgin, Miranda, and Apple's iChat. Apologies for omissions! Our poll this week focuses on IM clients. This weekend Corvida wrote that interoperability between popular IM clients is happening, albeit slowly.

]]> One thing that Corvida mentioned got me wondering: "Digsby is poised to take a serious amount from the market share of the standard clients because of its interoperability not only with IM clients, but also because of the integrated social networks and even email." With that in mind, let us know which IM clients you currently use in the poll below.

What about http://www.pidgin.im/??? Why isnt in in the poll list. I thought it was one of the most popular IM aggregator, and it is totally open source (GPL3).

You left out both the clients I use most of the time- iChat (for AIM and gtalk via XMPP) and the built-in AIM on my Sidekick. That the new iPhone still doesn't have an iChat port is the reason I haven't got one yet.

Pidgin is an important choice, I think. It's probably the number one IM client on Linux, and would be a much-used client on Windows, too, if it wouldn't be so ugly. :)

Btw: Why aren't there more simple but pretty clients for Windows? Trillian looks good, but it does too much, Yahoo! has a pretty messenger for Windows Vista, but not for XP, and it's not multi-protocol.
I don't like Digsby, either.

Well, You can use Pidgin on other OS's than Linux.
Solaris/Opensolaris is one of them.

I actually use several because of features of each. Yahoo! lets my do video with multiple people at once, which is great for distributed families.

Skype is needed because some of my work associates are only online with Skype.

I used to use Trillian, and I love their UI, but the app kept grabbing 100% of my CPU and holding if for longer and longer periods. That's not workable and is highly frustrating. I think it was related to people with whom I chatted a lot having huge chat history files. Anyway, that's what made me switch to Pidgin.

Pidgin has it's own problem. It shuts down abruptly from time to time.

I await the "Grand Unification Client."

The other messengers that I use are Novell and SameTime. Both of these applications I run at my different jobs however. Where I am from, Milwaukee area, AIM is the popular client. Even if I venture out twenty minutes MSN starts to become the norm. I still don't know why we use AIM around here. It probably has something to do with the good ol' AOL days in the city.

I use digsby as I like its compatibility with email (gmail), and social networks (twitter and facebook) It keeps me from wasting time logging into such sites. I currently use AIM, MSN, and Facebook Chat for the friends who dont have the first two.

Ok for everyone that said their fav clients were no on the poll, I'm sure as long as your fav clients, add protocols for Facebook and do a facelift mabey it can compete, but Uglt interfaces, and lacking protocols. Just cant Compete right now, were in the GUI Age.

The only people that dont like Disgby are those that want a fast streamline simple chat interface. But the winner is the one that has full functionality ie Digsby, its apparent from the polls that these folks are doing it right and are producing the superior IM client all around.

So if YOUR fav IM isn't listed, perhaps comment on their development page and ask them to facelift. Digsby caters to everyone, and does it very well.

Adium is by far the best, but when I have to boot Windows Digsby is WAY ahead of Trillian, Pidgin, Gaim (the 3 multi-client apps I've used). Email (Growl-like) notifications, SMS messaging, responding within the notification window...I will never go back to Pidgin!

I used to use Pidgin but I went with Digsby for the Facebook / Twitter / Myspace integration.

Now, if they can just get the MySpace IM working in Digsby i'd be sold for life. Supposedly Pidgin has reverse engineered the MySpace IM but still not working with Digsby. :(

Digsby is my favorite. I have used pidgin, gaim (on linux) and a few others and hated their restrictiveness. Digsby can be very simple to setup or a little more complex if you want *everything*. If you need the advanced functions of other ones, digsby may not do it. But I consider the best up there.

I am a big Digsby fan. I have moved my twitter away from Digsby though as I am using twhirl.

Does IMVU count as a chat client? If you think Digsby is a resource hog try IMVU for a minute or two. Some of my students use it though so I'm on it too.

Can instant chat be considered mainstream yet? Which is best for non tech savvy users?

I recommend Skype to people, but by default double clicking a user calls them, rather than starts a text chat. It does however have a lot of good features:
- Super easy signup, built into the app
- Simple interface (on the mac at least)
- Multi platform, and looks similar on different platforms
- Handles delayed messages well if the receiver is offline, they get it when they sign on
- Simple and fast file sending abilities (unless it has to use a super slow node somewhere due to firewalls)
- oh and it does voice and video chat too.

Disadvantages of skype:
- Proprietary system
- No 3rd party client support (fring on the iphone is the only one I've ever seen that does)
- Not set to text chat by default

I imagine Windows Messenger would be up there too, as it's pre installed.

I think this poll is a great example of how quickly new products come to market, user trends change in response, and different demographics have completely different preferences.

As a 20 year-old college student, I consider myself to be relatively tech-savvy and in tune with the trends. Even I know that AIM is dead and buried. Yet, the three messaging services that I do use consistently (Facebook, Gtalk, and Skype) COMBINED only capture 1/4 of the market, while Digsby, a program I've never even heard of, captures over 1/3 of the market ALONE.

Clearly, someone is using Digsby. And it isn't me-- or anyone I know. My best friends had never heard of Skype until I told them, and I only found out about it from my mother. This just goes to show that it isn't enough to just be young and computer-literate to identify the latest tech trends. Apparently, you also have to be in the loop to get the right message.

I use Digsby with googetalk and msn accounts.
Some of my contacts hate msn or doesn't want to use/download an own application (they are on gtalk or from gmail account), but most of my collegues use msn and I like that one more too. With Digsby I can contact with all of them, they're seeing my satus and pm messages (not like in pidgin and I don't have to write it into two places).
They have a great email notifier, you can put your emails into spam, delete, mark as read, archive or open, without opening the browser.
They are planning Skype and Mac support too and update often!They are developing...

I switched to Digsby not too long ago and absolutely love it. It has just about every feature I could ask for (and more!).

A long time ago I used AIM and Yahoo both loaded at the same time. That was when I didn't know alternatives existed. After I discovered these "all in one" clients I started using Trillian for a short time before switching to GAIM which I used for a long time. After that I switched to Pidgin which I also used for a long time. Once I discovered Digsby I haven't went back to any of them.

Sorry for telling you my whole life story related to IM clients, but I just wanted to share that I used most of the popular applications out there, and I really feel that Digsby is the absolute best there is right now. Everyone should give it a shot, you won't be disappointed.

The error exists in both Firefox 3 and IE7. I can't even view the results because of this. Please fix it ASAP!

I use only Jabber, as it can talk to IRC, MSN, ICQ etc. with a technic called transports. It's on the server side, so my Jabber clients don't have to know about that. The protocoll is multi protocoll abel, not clients.
To Jabber (which includes my GMail account), I use
Gajim (http://gajim.org/) on MS Windows, MacOSX and Linux/Unix
SamePlace (http://SamePlace.cc/) in Mozilla Firefox (when not allowed to install applications)
Bombus (http://bombus-im.org/) in my Java mobile.

Can be logged into my Jabber account from many different clients at the same time, no problem. Which can't be done from MSN, ICQ etc. If you try, your other clients will be thrown out. Home, mobile and work at same time.

This poll is Biased!!

The official Digsby site had a link to this poll, that is how i happened to see this. It seems to be biased for Digsby whereas there are millions of yahoo/msn etc users, who will never come here
