#080808 Twitter Campaign For Beijing Olympics

This week we've discussed how Social Media Marketing and Online Video is being used in the Beijing Olympics. It's now 8.08am on Friday 8th August 2008 in Beijing and some Chinese Web fans have launched a campaign to celebrate and support the opening of the Beijing Olympics, using (you guessed it) Twitter!

]]> 8 is a lucky number for the Chinese, and 08/08/08 is definitely a very special day. Twitter users can add the hashtag #080808 to all your tweets about Beijing Olympics on the 08/08/08. Currently if you search for #080808, you can see a new #080808 tweet coming up every 0.5 seconds!

On its official website, the campaign organizers - three Chinese bloggers by the names of Flypig, Webleon and Babechloe - also released a #080808 buddy icon template (download), to encourage Twitter users to make their own #080808 buddy icon. See the images below for inspiration.

A note that Twitter is not popular in China, but the Beijing Olympics could be a booster for the product there.

I want nothing to do with the Olympics. Never a huge fan anyway, but I know people who have lived in China and it is a horrible place. Thus, I'll be doing my small part by not watching. Of course, 90% of the crap in my house was probably made there.

Maybe this will make Twitter more popular over there....it's so interesting how all aspects of the Chinese economy are being affected by hosting the Olympics. "Not popular" is an understatement. "Not allowed" is closer to the chinese truth.

"Not allowed" as in all those internet users outside of china NOT being allowed to freely access whatever kind of internet is operating IN china, while chinas rulers have their armies trolling and posing across the internet in return.

"Not allowed" as in The Planet Earth wants the money china owes it in spades BACK, and wants to NOT hear this junk that The Planet Earth owes china money and everything else, including all of our childrens lives and employment, all of our food productivity and reserves, all of our natural resources and all of our jobs and productivity.

"Not popular" doesn't quite cut it.
