Mozilla: One Billion Addons Served - Here Are Some of Our Favorites

Mozilla today announced that it has served its 1 billionth addon download since they started keeping track of these downloads in 2005. Currently, Mozilla's users are downloading close to 1.5 million addons every day.

Mozilla has cultivated one of the most active and interesting developer communities around its products and seeing numbers like these will surely give a lot of other developers an incentive to try their hands at developing new plugins for Firefox as well.

]]> Mozila also just released a new interface to showcase some of the top Firefox addons, which will surely bring a lot of new users to those plugins featured there.

Your Favorites

We asked our readers and Twitter followers about their favorite apps and, as expected, received a wide variety of answers. For web developers, Firebug was clearly a winner, though a lot of you also mentioned Greasemonkey, the bookmarking plugin de.licio.us, and DownloadHelper. Other favorites included Ubiquity, and FoxMarks, AdBlock Plus (though we hope you disable it on RWW and your other favorite websites), and Tab Mix Plus.

Our Favorites

Among the RWW staff, Sarah Perez listed the magazine-style RSS reader Feedly and the FFHolic Toolbar for FriendFeed users as some of her favorites.

Rick Turoczy is a big fan of the CoolIris plugin that allows you to browse pictures and videos in a very pretty 3D environment, though he also likes Iterasi, which allows you to take live snapshots of any web page. (Disclosure: Iterasi is one of Rick's consulting clients, but he assures as that he likes it so much that would use it anyway)

Richard MacManus likes StumbleUpon and the Google Toolbar.

Other favorites among the rest of the staff here included ColorfulTabs, Evernote's Web Clipper, and the Google Notebook plugin.

Also, all of us at RWW try to use our sponsors' products, so we are currently checking out AdaptiveBlue's Glue as well.

iMacros, its like Excel macros, but for Firefox. A good way to automate routine tasks and save your fingers from undue stress. Definitely my most used addon.

I find it curious that you didn't mention ad block plus. It's obvious from the twitter snippet in the post that you got a lot of input on that one.

I certainly hope this is just a simple oversight and not an example of your desire to "monetize" affecting your editorial freedom.

Check out KwiClick. Kinda new, but does some really interesting stuff like overlay google search results directly on your active window so theres no need to visit google.com:

Adblock Plus? Rilly?? Did we miss something? YEAH, you missed something, like actually posting anything relevant we netizens haven't seen or heard of before. I read this on DIGG, geniuses, meaning that we've already seen whatever breadcrumb addonss your bleeding-edge staff are using about a year ago. Maybe you could post this instead to the quilting or macramé sites around the toobs. Maybe they'll appreciate your visionary insight. Until then, stop asking your underpaid staffers "Hey, guys, whatcha got installed on ur browsers?"

You did forget something - throughout the whole article - descriptions of what the plugins are! You think I have time to sit here and click through every link just because you mentioned it? Try adding descriptions next time, and maybe you'll find that people are more inclined to turn off ABP on your site.

The del.icio.us plugin is vital.

I also love an add-on I discovered just recently - Copy Plain Text (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/134) - which allows one to do just as its name says, from a Web page. An absolute necessity for Web workers, in my opinion. Now that I have it, I couldn't live without it.
