In the course of the 2008 U.S. election cycle, which resulted in the election of Senator Barack Obama last night, we regularly reported about how the candidates used the web and social media tools to connect to their followers and organize their campaigns. Today, we received some data from Trendrr, an online statistics mashup tool, that clearly shows Obama's lead in using technology to connect to his audience, as well as his overall lead in mindshare in the blogosphere as a whole.

Blogs

While overall blog mentions of Obama and McCain varied greatly during the last year (and we can't say if those were positive or negative posts), close to 500 million blog postings mentioned him since the beginning of the conventions at the end of August. During the same time period, only about 150 million blog posts mentioned McCain (though it would also be interesting to see similar statistics for Governor Palin as well).

Twitter and MySpace

On social networks, Obama also held a clear lead, with 844,927 MySpace friends compared to McCain's 219,404. Just between November 3rd and November 4th (election day), Obama gained over 10,000 new friends, while McCain only gained about 964. On Twitter, Obama gained 2865 new followers between the 3rd and 4th (for a total of 118,107), while John McCain's Twitter account only has a paltry 4942 followers in total.

There are, of course, a lot of reasons for why Barack Obama's campaign gained a lot more traction on social networks and blogs than the McCain campaign. The demographics of social media users tend to fall in line more closely with those of today's Democratic voters, for example. However, looking forward to the next campaign cycle, it seems clear that all political campaigns, especially at this level, will start ignoring social media trends at their own peril.

Internet smaminternet...

The Internet is just another form of advertising/marketing like the newspaper, magazines, television, radio, etc...

Did it have that much of an effect on the election? I don't think so. If you voted for Obama, are you telling me that it was the Internet portion/activity that made you vote for his ticket? If so, I think it says more about you than about him.

Rather, I hope it was his policies/stances that made you vote for him. If not, you really need ... help.

To be honest, both candidates should have been saying that taxes were not going to be either cut or cut as much as previously stated due to the changes in the economic crisis. The Obama economic team stated they were working hard, now, to determine how to respond to the changing economic climate since their work and stance was based on the pre-market/bank crash--meaning their raise taxes and spend more position. My guess is that the backpeddling has started--he stated it might not happen soon or in his first term in office... Seems we will be waiting for that change a little bit longer.

And no, I voted Libertarian (not because I am a "technical" libertarian, but because I think both parties are trying hard to reduce the freedom's enjoyed by the "other" party, and I don't understand that--the Declaration, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Amendments, etc. are there to guarantee ALL of US have those rights) because I think both McCain and Obama "mislead" the public and said things just to get elected. We should all be looking at the promises made and what is done once in office. We should remember--I think both McCain and Obama knew they were going to have to change their economic plans (tax cuts, spending, etc.) due to the changing market conditions, but we heard very little about making the tax cuts smaller, etc.

Either way, the Internet just gets the message out sooner since there is no waiting for publishing and the "distribution" is based on both a server-oriented and peer-to-peer method to spread the "news." However, I don't think the method of delivery (Internet, newspaper, or anything else "makes" you change your vote). Rather, it is the opinions of the candidate, as expressed in the media, that sway your position.

(http://tinyurl.com/5vf2sz) It surely did when he stood in front of it, as an almost hypnotic halo behind his head. (http://tinyurl.com/5kmuqs). Having a "cool" templated Myspace profile is just icing on the cake after you sway a few followers with great design sense.

True leadership in the new millenia is telling someone what they want to hear, like a therapist. Someone that can come out of nowhere, with no questions asked and *poof* handed the keys to the greatest Republic this planet has ever had. Just like when you see the soccor Mom climb out of her SUV and gives her screaming kid more candy so he'll be quiet in the grocery store.

Now on to hearing remarks of retaliation from all you hipsters.

Yes Obama had a dominating lead online vs McCain. But in some cases the McCain campaign didn't bother even showing up

You might be interested in this post where I compared the search engine results & social media presence's of Barack Obama and John McCain, on Google, Google News, Image and Video Search, Technorati, Wordpress.Com, and Yahoo. Also search results for both, and their presences and subscribers on Youtube Flickr, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and Friend Feed, and the % differences between both.

http://adultaddstrengths.com/2008/11/05/obama-vs-mccain-social-media/

on MySpace, McCain's profile strangely had no comments vs Obama's 147,630. Obama had 117, 873 Youtube Subscribers and 22,226 friends, McCain had zero of each. Obama's website had nearly 6,000% more pages than McCain's.
