Thomson Reuters is today launching the latest version of its Calais web service and open API, Calais 4.0. Calais is a toolkit of products that enables publishers to incorporate semantic functionality within their properties - enabling them to categorize content as people, places, companies, facts, events, and more. Calais 4.0 is perhaps the most significant version since the launch of Calais one year ago, because it enables publishers to connect to the Linked Data web standard that Sir Tim-Berners Lee and others in the Semantic Web community have been promoting over the past few years.

Up till now, we have yet to see much commercial activity in Linked Data - developments have been largely confined to the academic and scientific communities. So we think Calais 4.0 represents an important move forward in the commercial Semantic Web - and we expect to see some big media companies using it before long.

Specifically, Calais 4.0 goes beyond metatagging and enables publishers to integrate their content with Linked Data assets from Wikipedia, GeoNames, the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), Shopping.com and others. Calais 4.0 also lets publishers share semantic metadata about their content with "content consumers" such as search engines, news aggregators, related stories recommendation services and more.

ReadWriteWeb named Calais as one of our top 10 Semantic Web Apps of 2008, due to the progress it made last year. Since launching the Open Calais API early in 2008, over 9,000 developers have registered with it and Calais has processed 200+ million articles.

What's New in 4.0

We spoke with Thomas Tague, Calais lead at Thomson Reuters, about what specifically is new with Calais 4.0 and what use cases we might see over the coming year for it.

Tague explained to ReadWriteWeb that there are 3 pillers to the Calais initiative:

1. Getting semantic data out of text; which is what the first 3 versions of Calais focused on.
2. Connecting that semantic data to the linked data world.
3. Providing some way for people to share metadata, for example syndicating it - which Tague termed the "transport" piller.

Calais 4.0, explained Tague, fills in the final 2 of those pillers. It supports approximately 25 entity types in Linked Data - URIs are de-referencable to Calais RDF pages. Thomson Reuters is also publishing their ontology in RDFS. Calais will contribute data too, which Thomson Reuters claims is "the first contribution to the Linked Data cloud made by a major publisher." The data that Thomson Reuters is giving to the Linked Data world includes company descriptions, stock tickers, management teams and more. This data will be available to external developers to programmatically use in their apps.

Thomas Tague told ReadWriteWeb that Thomson Reuters has some big data assets and that over time "we're going to populate linked data endpoints with Thomson Reuters data". We asked Tague whether he thinks Calais 4.0 is the biggest commercial use of the Linked Data standard yet? He thinks it is; in his opinion, Linked Data has mostly been used so far for open data projects and relatively small sets of data. Tague said that "we fundamentally believe that companies need to jump into this [Linked Data]".

The Linking Open Data dataset cloud; by Richard Cyganiak

In terms of piller 3, the metadata transportation, Tague explained to us that a document gets a unique identifier - and to syndicate content, publishers just need to make available that unique identifier to external parties.

Conclusion

It will be interesting to see what companies make use of Calais over 2009. Last year we noted that IBM was using Calais - and we presume that with the extra Linked Data and transport functionality, other big companies will want to make use of Calais data too. Thomas Tague told us that they hope to announce 2 big product partners soon. He also said that they're seeing major traction around Drupal. Healthcare IT News from MedTech Publishing, a site developed in Drupal, features the full Calais suite for publishers including "More Like This", their related content plugin.

As we noted at the beginning of this post, we've been impressed with the progress Calais has made since its launch at the start of 2008. With 4.0, we expect to see it gain more traction among commercial publishers in 2009. Indeed as a (we like to think) ahead-of-the-curve 'new media' company ourselves, we're about to embark on our own project using Calais! Stay tuned for more information on that.

Democratic Arab .. fattening generals and killed activists and bloggers!!

A reading of the current Arab scene by scene, the press and stifle freedoms on the sidelines of a more serious stage is not in conformity with the race around the world information revolution, this time the dangerous Arab-led government wants to keep its people in the age of blockage and ignorance and accept the bitter reality!!

The spider’s web, which weaves in this context, and in recent years has expanded the continuing abuses against journalists and many of the reporters, activists and bloggers. With the widening of the so-called fourth power of any electronic journalism .. and allowed without any limits to the writing of the most daring and freedom, and for those who missed work the press without restrictions from the grip of authoritarian management and whip!

With the imposition of restrictions on the sites and also banned by the Authority, this method is no longer useful in the presence of the so-called fracture sites banned or prohibited, but there is no way to save the activist blogger or cloth, which will be in power, which wants to punish him for it without being false Sodoaip ,

Where it is possible to start this part dark, who is on our minds each and every moment?

Onbdo of Yemen, which killed a journalist Abdalhabib democracy as well as journalist Salem Abdulaziz Al-Saqaf, editor of the Yemen Times, and the journalist Hamid Ahrp, Chief Editor of the people in a vague and sporadic incidents,

And trying to kill the journalist (Khaled Salman), Chief Editor of the Revolutionary subjected to trials in which the issues were not linked to any of the press, and then announced that political asylum in Britain in the donor countries conference held in London with the delegation accompanying the President of the Republic, would meet the extremes of the countries participating in the donor countries to it is a state sponsor of democracy and journalists as part of the delegation of this country, the press announced that the request for political asylum in Britain at the same time?

Also tried to press (Karim Khaiwani) on charges of belonging to a terrorist cell of Sanaa after being abducted, beaten three times because of his writings about the regime and the war of Saada!!

In addition to the closure of a number of newspapers, including the parliament, which was editor-in-chief (Abdul Karim Khaiwani) and issued a yellow leaves after a while and told reporters the process of working with the Palestinian Authority!

As well as the allocation of a number of security men is the task to comment on the subjects that the anger of the web sites in order to question the reality of what they write and hit the coalition with everything that is written!!

Which happened to me is the most unusual and is happening in other Arab countries,

Has been subjected to three assassination attempts by the authorities immediately after it published an article in my blog on the implications of the attack on the U.S. embassy in Sanaa on September 17 of 2008.

After the publication of many of the sites is what is happening with human rights, the Yemeni authority to postpone the project in the assassination of a code writer until recently,

Of course, I arrived in the cases of the requested political asylum in France and the French embassy in Sanaa agreed initially, asked me to come to the headquarters of the French embassy in Sanaa, to announce them publicly on the asylum application for approval, and when I went to the Embassy of France, surprised by a large number of crews, military patrols learned that this subject and decided to Ichttavi before reaching the embassy, under the charge of those proceedings which I have, I was not able to go to them, although now that the embassy was waiting for my presence to it,

It is trying to kill me now resume, after being attacked by people and threatened me with death certainly in the coming days, it says, after all, who said that the country of Yemen, a country of democracy and fair and independent judiciary, democracy is the result of an illegal for those who receive, a sign used to attract donations and assistance from donor countries for fattening Jnralathm dollars and spending power is inside a footnote Almchaik and senior and influential within the country,

And the country’s independent judiciary and fair would be executed (Ali Musa Awhitani) after the amount of prison (41) years, has all his mental faculties and is not aware of anything, including the death penalty.

It is reported missing by the judiciary over all these four decades!!

This is a summary of the democratic Yemen, what is going on, what there is in other countries listed Saudi prison (Fouad Farhan) because of his views and then was released by the royal regime, has not there to assassinate him or attempt to assassinate him, as does the democratic system in Yemen, me, and Alraje Mohammed, who was jailed in Morocco He was released in the marathon trial may be the fastest in the history of the elimination of Morocco.

As well as the prison Mdunan Egyptian and Syrian Igital my rights activists by the Syrian intelligence,

Not to mention the other violations against reporters in the Arab world without the erosion of other real criminals!!

It is separated by the Constitution, measured within five minutes can do everything out of the customary law of the globe in the respect for human rights.

Apropos comments by Andraz, it would be nice if you could qualify what you mean by "academic" and/or "scienific" in some of your comments. Otherwise, you inadvertently misplace other players in this very diverse realm.

With regards to Calais, Zemanta, and Faviki (to name a few recent Linked Data Community additions) the collective value they bring is as follows:

1. Natural Language enhanced Named Entity Extraction from unstructured data sources (Calais & Zemanta)

2. Association of Exracts from #1 with other Web Resources (Zemanta re. Wordpress based blogosphere)

3. Association of Extracts from #1 with Facts and Events (Calais, naturally, they are Reuters and they unveil a model here for other Media entities)

4. Lookups against DBpedia (Linked Data View of Wikipedia) that result in the Extracts being assigned Entity IDs (HTTP based Identifiers) that provide access to negotiated representations of Entity Descriptions (Entity-Attribute-Value graphs) in (X)HTML, RDF, N3, JSON, and other formats

5. Lookups that combine #2 & #4 en route to better tagging (Faviki)

The Linking Open Data community is the center of this hub, and DBpedia lies at the core of the Hub.

DBpedia runs on a high-performance DBMS engine that has been commercial grade for eons, it's called: OpenLink Virtuoso. In addition, OpenLink Virtuoso posses in-built middleware for doing joins and merges across the Linked Data realms so that you can query any Web Resource using SPARQL or simple look at it Linked Data Graph from any Browser.

Great interview; very informative. We too use Calais to automatically tag entries coming into our web content syndication platform SourcedFrom. Calais does a fantastic job of tagging content and the fourth piller offers exciting opportunities for content syndication.

A big thanks to the Calais team and Thomson Reuters for making this technology freely available for us to all benefit! A step closer to the ‘Semantic Web’.

This is exciting news. I'm using Calais in a non-commercial context for my personal blog. It works fantastically for some taxonomies (like people) and a little more erratically on others (i.e. confusion between organizations and facilities) - but it is a handy way to mine connections and opportunities for search traffic out of a large body of content. I'm really looking forward to exploring this new, expanded functionality.

The Linked Data support makes it a lot more attractive now. We'll certainly give it another try (and Zemanta as well :-)

Hi,

Richard, really good review and I am really happy that OpenCalais has supported the Linking Data initiative.

But it would be proper to mention the fact that Zemanta has offered an API for linking text entities to the Linking Open Data (DBPedia, MusicBrainz and others) a month ago. I hope you are not considering Zemanta an academic project.

I'd also like to encourage you to try out both APIs when considering your semantic project and report about their advantages and disadvantages.

bye
