Google I/O is a now annual event being held this year on May 27 - 28, 2009 in San Francisco. It's aimed at web developers, to whom Google will showcase "how to develop web applications with Google and open technologies." ReadWriteWeb has 10 free tickets to give away to Google I/O; and we thought an interesting way to do that would be to ask for your feature requests on current Google products. Choose any product you like - e.g. Google Reader, Google Health, or the new Google Latitude - and tell us what feature you'd like to see Google add to it. Or if the product has an API, what third party app you would like to see.

The ReadWriteWeb team will select the 10 most interesting responses and offer a free Google I/O ticket to those people. You can enter as many times as you like (1 comment per entry) and if you happen to have more than one winning comment, we'll give you an extra ticket for each winner.

The I/O stands for "Innovation/Open" (i/o is also a programmer term input/output). Google told us in May 2008 that we're at an "inflection point for web app development" and that Google is all about "driving usage of the Internet". The Web is now the defacto platform for application development, according to Google, and so naturally they want to encourage developers to use both Google and Open Web products.

Please leave your feature suggestions in the comments below and be in to win a Google I/O ticket, worth $400 USD each.

I like the Google "Shopping" link. You can type in a search & it will find *products* that meet the criteria and sort them by price, etc.

But what about *services*?

What if I'm searching for hosted exchange services, or Online backup services, or PCI scanning services, etc. Those hits don't show up in the shopping link, so I cant see nor sort the hits by pricing.

i was thinking of a new why of home networking and file sharing
my idea - buy one desktop/server for the home, then just add monitors that would communicate with the server via wireless or cable, the monitors themselves would be like dumb terminals with just a mouse, keyboard and remote attached to it. the monitor would have a basic computer to process the input commands to the sever and to process the display output from the server, i was thinking of something like a wireless display card that plugs into the server, i guess in a nutshell something like terminal services. would have to build in USB and dvd/ bluray inputs into the monitors
one computer, ten displays, one save location, easier setup for the home user not to mention could be cheaper

A catalog of sounds that a person can search and play.
Examples:
The sound of a Harley-Davidson
The sound of a baby crying / laughing
The sound of a specific species of bird's song
The sounds of EVERYTHING individually listed.
People can up-load contributions like You-tube.

Visualy impared people will find the catalog of sounds a treasure-trove for exploration
Researchers can compare the song of a blue bird with the call of a cara-cara
An old man can relive the sound of his muscle car cranking up
etc. etc. etc.

A great enhancement to Google Earth would be the availability to select a "half way" point to meet between destinations. For us frequent travelers between two points we often meet people at a half way point. Since Google earth has a databank of restaurants, hotels, etc it makes sense to provide the user with a way to pick a half way point for meetings. This feature could also be built into contact management tools etc. Hope you like the idea.

I am IT Professional who has been engaged with IT user services and helpdesk for more than 22 years. I would love to see Google develop and integrate a service-desk type application in its portfolio of products. What are some of the musts in this system:

1. Integration to organizational LDAP, Outlook, Exchange or other directory services

2. Ability for multiple departments to utilize the same (IT helpdesk, Facilities services, Finance, Library, etc.)

3. Web-enabled and local service/server enabled.

4. Customizable reporting features

It would be my privilege to participate in the design phase of this project. With my experience in higher education and specifically in User Services, Support, helpdesk I believe I could bring in some perspective that might be of value. Thank you.

Set up a service for an sms to be sent to the user's handphone whenever an email is received at his gmail address. The email should contain the name of the sender, title of email and maybe about 50 letters of the email content. The user has to subscribe and pay for the sms sent. Currently, it is important for businesses to respond to their customers quickly if not they may risk losing potential customers to their competitors. Each email received could be a potential business client.

The user can choose a variety of configurations that include:
1) Not to receive more than 1 sms from the same email sender per day;
2) A maximum daily cap on the cost incurred by using this sms service;
3) An ignore list;
4) VIP emails (Sms must be sent regardless of daily cap)
And etc.... and BTW, I'll subscribe to this service once it's online :)

Right now I can use google reader or google homepage to stay updated on local nonprofits' blogs. Wouldn't it be great if there was a way they could post events to an RSS feed? Google calendars could let you choose whose events you would want to be notified, and it could automatically add those events to your calendar.

Our "Community Service Calendar" would always be up to date with the latest community service events, as well as any changes to those events. I think many others could find ways to utilize this option as well.

Right now, the promising medium of ebooks is crippled by poorly designed desktop readers and vulnerable DRM solutions. Of the 60 ebooks I have bought in about six years, I can only read 4. The rest has become the victim of DRM messing up.

My ideal solution would be:

- web application
- as fast as gmail and Google maps
- purchased ebooks are stored on line
- DRM is also handled by the server
- books can be lent to and borrowed from other users for 30 days.

etc.

Google Schools:

Google should improve Google Apps Education Edition to include school intranets. The intranet should be host student files. To turn in an assignment, the student simply puts his/her document into the "To Be Graded" folder. This would not only help teachers and students become organized, but save a ton of money on paper! Also, for the students interested in the internet, they could host their own web pages. Google Schools should allow the school to easily set up its own intranet. The intranet can include activity signup, social networking, and the schools latest news. The collaborative documents should be made easier to use, and incorporated into Google Schools. Students and teachers would have to login to view files of course, and with Google's amazing security and spam filters, this would be possible. Google could place subtle ads at the bottom of the page, to make the service free and accessible to most schools.

Lets go Google Schools!

Move beyond keywords and integrate semantics into Alerts to identify topics based on their context.

Background:
I use Google Alerts to stay up to date on topics such as "Flex" and "Azure." The value of Alerts diminishes quickly when I receive many alerts for "flex fuels" or "Bentley Azure". The value in adding semantics is to filter out all the junk.

Example:
The following link shows the integration of twitter and OpenCalais to provide accurate real-time information on political candidates:
http://election.windycitizen.com/candidates/all

Bonus Features:
- Subscribe directly to Google Alerts (RSS) in Google Reader
- A Google Alert API for Developer to leverage Google's indexing in real time

Hi Richard,

I work for www.nomadesk.com, which offers easy and secure file sharing, wherever you are. I read your post on Google's GDrive with great interest and just wanted to add NomaDesk to the mix.

NomaDesk, trusted by mobile (“nomadic”) businesses for several years now both in Europe and the U.S., has similar features such as the ones you mention. We are convinced that the more data gets synchronized, the more likely it gets compromised. Therefore, NomaDesk includes an encrypted virtual drive that keeps your files securely available off-line and remote file shredding and IP-tracking with TheftGuard. Of course, we impose no limits on storage and bandwidth.A Mac version is on its way.

NomaDesk works with a local client and allows access to your files from anywhere on the web. We have very good reasons to work with a local client, next to the already "traditional" web interface (e.g., box.net, the late Xdrive, etc.):

(1) 100% availability of the data, regardless of network quality
(2) 100% performance when editing files, using any type of program
(3) 100% simplicity; just drag-n-drop files to synchronize and share them
(4) 100% security on the PC also: the virtual drives that NomaDesk creates on the PC are encrypted and can be shred remotely via our online TheftGuard service.

The bulk of our users, which are SOHO and SMB teams, appreciate the straightforward and secure file sharing they get through using the NomaDesk client software. You should know that in most cases NomaDesk replaces the traditional file server, FTP and VPN - with success!

Please let me know your thoughts.

Kind regards,
F.

I don't have any of the fine ideas stated in the comments above, I have a rather simple request/change for google search.

I usually find that when I am searching google recently, I would like to filter results by date e.g. I was searching for compatibility issues between Safari 4 and Gmail and found several results that indeed discuss this but problems was they were about 3/4 years old (safari 2/3 issues with gmail). I realised that I wold like to see a filter system for google search results, sort of like in the Google News section (with date ranges on the side). As more websites/blogs like this one have a timestamp on article or comment, then google should implement it into search results to further streamline and customise results.

At the very least a timestamp of the page returned in the results should be included...

Yes, I do like Google Maps on my AT&T Blackberry 8820. But like all other Google applications, Google Map on Blackberry has very big issue and that is it can not make of free Wi-Fi interface available on the device and to make things worse, Upon opening, Google maps is secretly using the data plan on my AT&T SIM card without the feedback given to the user. I know the big carrier is happier. But Is Google happy too?

This problem is well-known and exists for all Google applications on Blackberry platform and it is against original spirit of the Google founders.

So the #1 Google feature I am requesting is to:

Free Us and Let Google freeware be truly free and let us use wi-fi only mode, please.

Google reader could have following features:
- There should be mutiple ways of filering feeds.
e.g right google allows tabs to to classify feeds and these tags are more like creating directories where feeds will be files. Google can add another layer of tagging so that I can search my entries using bothe layer1 tags as well as layer2-layerN tags.

- Similarly for bookmarking right now it allows just star, it will be good if I can bookmark like I bookmark in browser i.e create folder(or say tags) and add starred item in that.
(another way they can also add stars of multiple colors as there is some add on in gmail)

- Filtering for feeds while reading: reader should be able to filter individual feeds based on popularity or some other criteria e.g. there is postarnk add on, but this add on is not enough I might define another criteria that could be saved and reader will preset entries based on my criteria

- There are tons of ideas on similar line.. if google is interested you can ask them to contact me.

I’m not sure what google was trying to accomplish with orkut, but I’d like to see them implement some of the ideas in social networking tools to their other products. For instance, when my friends share items with me in reader, I’d sometimes like to make comments about the items to them rather than on the blog or whatever it originally came from. After all, if they felt it interesting enough to share in the first place then a dialogue about the item should be welcomed. Other people who that person has shared with should also be able to see such comments (depending on facebook-like levels of privacy that would need to be implemented with this sort of thing). I’d also like to see incorporation of Nikos’ idea in tandem with this as another option. Basically more, and selective sociability across the entire google “suite” of apps.

I’d also like to be able to easily show people anything in talk with accompanying video feed (ie. Pics, charts, drawing board etc.).

I am a huge Google Fan and I usually spend a lot of time on Google Reader and Gmail. Here are my suggestions for Google Reader:-
1) The Reader must intelligently eliminate duplicate items i.e., items that are listed on both my subscriptions and the shared items. It will be nice if it can display who all shared the item and any specific note(s) written by them.
2) Allow secure feed subscription (in that way I can actually subscribe to my gmail)
3) Show the items that I have emailed in the shared items division with in the reader. In that way all the items that I have shared (via ..shared items or via email) can be retrieved from a single place.
4) Add Google Talk gadget somewhere on the screen so that we can share an item as an IM instead of email.(I really liked the approach they took for Google Friend Connect Toolbar). and add those items to above # 3 as well.
5) As some one already mentioned, it will be really cool if they can provide a way to discuss any item.

I would like to see Google Analytics answer the question of why people visit a site for 00:00. Is it because the link they clicked on was dead, was the headline that brought a viewer to a site not matching up with the body of the story, was the site's aesthetics immediately not to the visitor's liking, etc.

I think an easy solution would be a pop-up to only visitors of a site that open a page and then immediately close that page within 3 seconds. It could be an easy pop-up comment box that simply asks: "Why are you leaving so quickly?", no registration required and they could close that box immediately if they don't want to submit a quick comment.

At least that way, a site manager would have a bit more data as to why people that click a headline from Google.news or Google organic only visit a site for 00:00 according to the data acquired by Google Analytics.

It's a open sync engine (developers can add plugins) that aims at agregating user files spread in the cloud altogether.
Many plugins do exist yet (Picasa, Flickr, Box, RSS, PC-mirroring, a so-called "GDrive" and more...)

It claims to be the convergence of the desktop world and the web world for users' data: ''With Olipo, users get the best of the two worlds. Files/folders manipulations are easy, convenient, painless, fast and well-known; Web Services are beautiful, innovative and rich-featured (sharing, commenting, publishing...). Olipo is the application in the middle: it simplifies and automatizes the upload/download process, it handles the mapping between files/folders and abstract web data.''

It is connected to many APIs around the world and the community side is hosted on Google App Engine.

Hi, i know this is not the right place to say this, but i'm experiencing HUGELY annoying problems with Facebook at the moment! Since about a week ago, they launched some kind of wap site. Now, in the past, i have been able to use opera mini And my sony ericsson w850i to access the main Facebook site, add comments, And use my applications. Now all of a sudden, the site recognises my phone as a phone, And sends me straight to some mobile site where i am unable to even comment on status updates!! I cant even file complaints, as i am unable to click on anything! This is driving me insane as i am quite addicted to Facebook and i'm sure i'm not the only one out there who is experiencing this. I know the problem does not lie with opera mini, as they haven't sent out an upgrade in ages. This only started happening last week. Please please please fix this soon! I would so love to be able to access the main site through my phone again! Once again, i apologise for posting this here. I had nowhere else to go...

Just a tweak to an existing feature in Google Reader -- instead of "share" an item, make it "Recommend" and item. I think this simple change of language would encourage really high quality filtering from more Google Reader users. The great analogy to this is the TimesPeople feature in NYT. It's technically the same feature as digg this, or share this, etc., but the language of "recommend" and the user flow of following recommendations encourages me to only recommend high quality content and gives me a social reward (reputation) for recommending good stuff.

There should be a TimesPeople for the entire web, and google reader is the best place to start.

My request is simple and would be quite useful:

Let Google Calendar access Latitude data to help you leave on time for your appointments and to send notifications if it detects you are running late.

Google Calendar knows when and where your meetings are. Google Latitude knows where you are. Therefore, it could easily do two things:

1. Send you a message when you should leave for an appointment if it detects that you are not in the same place as your appointment.

2. If it detects that you are too far away from the appointment location to make it in time (i.e., your appointment is in San Jose in five minutes and you are in SOMA), then it can send you text message asking what you want to do: 1.) have it send an e-mail the other meeting attendees on your behalf or 2.) send you the contact info of the person you are meeting. You can respond simply be replying to the text message.

There are other scenarios Calendar+Latitude would allow, but this one would be really useful.

Google Reader: Skip shortcut.

This would be useful (especially for keyboard shortcut lovers like myself) since when you are blazing through your feed reader and come across an article that isn't worth your time you hit the skip shortcut ('s' maybe?) to essentially mark it as read but it doesn't factor into your reading trends as a "read" article. The article would still be found under "all items" just like all other articles.

This would actually provide accurate feed reading trends since I wouldn't have 100% "read" in every single feed I subscribe to like I do now.

It's a simple feature to implement too.

My request is so (conceptually) simple:

Hierarchical labels in GMail.

It would be such a huge UI improvement if I could nest my labels (e.g. school/compsci101, school/math101, etc), as opposed to some silly encoding scheme on the label name.

You still have the power of labels (namely that a single item can have zero or more labels applied to them), but you get the organizational power of folders (these labels are related, and I want to perform some action on all of them).

In my opinion, applying multiple labels (e.g. school and compsci101, school and math101) is insufficient because it quickly becomes unmanageable: you can't "fold" away groups of labels, and you would have to manually apply multiple labels to each item.

My suggestion is a two step process. First, it would combine two of Google's apps that are constantly open in my browser, Reader and Gmail. They already look a lot alike and combining these would not take me off guard. So following that, I would love to see Reader (in Gmail) support viewing and posting comments, in a similar fashion to how Gmail shows an email conversation between you and others.

My contribution:

Everyone uses their email inbox as a to-do list, but GMail isn't set up to reflect this fact right now. We should be able to arbitrarily order and group messages under different headings. We should also be able tag time-sensitive ones with times and dates, and link them to GCal entries. And we should be able to add a new entry more elegantly than just sending ourselves an email.

Google - seriously - you need to release a Mobile Maps API with smaller tile sizes for mobile phones.

Other services such as http://www.cloudmade.com are way ahead of the game using open source maps and mobile maps APIs customised for different phones.

A Mobile Maps API would provide for smaller map tile sizes, faster load times and a better application repository so mobile applications can start using mapping technology easily.

The sooner we get this - the better applications can become using Google Maps.

Imagine using Google to book "Seats", e.g. in an Restaurant (maybe near to you: again, LBS could help), or in a theater or cinema show (an extended example below). Think about an "Expedia" for any kind of business.

Detailed Movie/Cinema example
do you already use google movie search?!? http://www.google.com/movies It's great! The only thing I miss is that I cannot buy my ticket on line, but I have to get there and walk the line to the desk, which in a multiplex it's quite annoying. And do not bother me with paper tickets: I could show a QR matrix or codebar on my device. It would be great if I could simply book/buy it online.

note on constraints: I know that real time availability it's a tricky thing, but, hey, things like Expedia work because big operators WANT to appear in search related results, so they have an option to provide their services with some kind of API to enable the on-line booking process. Small/medium operators can evaluate mixed strategies.
Many of these services could require a transaction. But I suppose that the payments (micro) business is an inevitable mark for any operator in the industry. How many years away? Two? Three?
I hear that in Japan (which has quite a lucky situation, with a single dominating operator) something in the field is already being done.

Ok, that's the last! ;) Forgive my less then perfect English. :)

What would be cool is if one can schedule CPU/memory intensive tasks in the background that send a notification etc. whenever they complete. This would be useful for resource intensive applications in 3D graphics rendering and genome research for instance.

Currently, one can do this with Amazon EC2 because you effectively lease a VM instance there and you can do whatever you want with it.

Google can setup a paid model for this kind of a service, of course.

Across all products, implement a strategy similar to Yahoo's Open Platform Strategy, and then make the Google / iGoogle page home page the equivalent of the newsfeed for people if they want that functionality turned on. Enable sharing of search results within SocialGoogle friends and on all SocialGoogle search results. Integrate the SERP sharing with Facebook Connect and MySpace ID so it is still useful to people who haven't joined GoogleSocial.

All of the product components are there, and integrating the combined app onto one screen (ideally the Google home page) with some awesome AJAX functionality. I think would give it the attention / distribution needed to make a serious play in the area.

Buy FriendFeed to accelerate the process if needed. Perhaps even buy MySpace and add in the communications platform that people like on Facebook, which would essentially allow MySpace to boom on risks as though it were a venture-backed company -- I'm sure Google can bring in some strong engineering there.

A line of scenery: I live in Rome, a big and quite congested city. I often make use of private taxi. There are a lot more private taxis/limousine services than regular taxi.
I would like to have the dynamic position of these cars on my google maps/latitude display, sharing my position with them (if they also have a cartographic display).

So, we need two features (actually a new API and a feature):
- feed "Latitude" with a stream of data (giving each one of the taxi drivers an always connected device is not an option. Not a convenient one. They should use the typical hub-topology based localisation)
- Once I get in contact with the driver/car I choose, I should be able to share my position with him (without any other "friendship" to be estabilished).

The same service could be applied for regulars taxi/cabs, of course. The reason has more business value for the limousine/private taxi, because their model of business does not require a central hub for collecting calls.
That way if people find they like what I sell on ebay, maybe they will also like my blog and perhaps purchase my items on amazon too.

I think a universal ID would go far beyond the rating systems put in place now at individual sites to give people an even better idea of the reliability (or lack there of) of online people. Your reputation can surpass the individual sites and help people discover other places of interest.

When I will read any of them, they will be marked in entire Reader as a read post. So i will escape double reading and it will be convenient for me to focus on specific topic. why it is good for me, I am an adman, so I have three websites that have print, Tv, outdoor ads sections, but i don't want to surf each feed and read all their news. I want to read only Print ads or Tv ads. I guess it is not really that difficult.

I'd like to see modification to gmail to avoid sending email to old email addresses. Although it is helpful to have gmail cache all email addresses that I send mail to, it can be a problem when I send email to someone who has updated his or her email address. I regularly end up sending mail to an old address because gmail auto-fills it in.

So I'd like to be able to start typing and have the usual list come up, but for email addresses that are no longer to be used, I'd like to be able to right click and remove them. (Or something like that.) Or alternatively, I'd like to be able to mark an email address I'm using as the "primary" and then only have primary addresses come up with the auto-fill.

Google App Engine could be far more than a variation on Amazon Web Services.

Google Apps is growing quickly, and based on Google's recent move to open a program of Google Apps resellers, it seems like they're eager to get Google Apps to dominate the enterprise cloud-based software management.

Here's an idea - a Google Apps store (or a Marketplace or a Bazaar...) allowing App Engine applications to have some special hooks into Google Apps taking advantage of all of those underused Apps features like Groups and messaging. This would increase the value of both Apps and App Engine, and since App Engine already ships with customized APIs, it wouldn't be very difficult at all to make it very easy for App Engine developers to serve Apps user. In fact, App Engine's upcoming XMPP support is a *huge* opportunity for App Engine developers to offer all kinds of collaboration tools to Apps users.

Wait a second....does this not sound so unfamiliar? Perhaps that's because you've tried the Labs feature for Google Apps where with one-click, you can add applications to your Google Apps account like Moderator and Short Links. These Labs applications - yep, that's right - all running on App Engine.

Between Google Apps Labs and the Google Apps Marketplace, Mountain View is already half-way there.

Go the rest of the way FTW, Google. It's a no-brainer.

integration is the key feature. Just look at using Gmail, Google Sites and Google Docs WYSIWYG features. Same, but then again, quite different.

In other words: simple templates for building a new google/open-stack powered app, to target mashups / enterprise / browser / labs / mobile (all powered by app engine?).

Did i mention the need for a central developer hub? and i don't mean a feed mashup of the 80 blogs they have, but a holistic overview of all the groups, apis, services and resources available to those interested.

And why not have developers be paid through google checkout for using their appengine apps on your google apps domain?

Google Latitude: should include semantic location data (as opposed to addresses, coordinate, or map data, which is how latitude currently allows you to find your friends), which would allow you to know where your friends are via textual data such as "friendx is @ locationame"

ie: "Jon is @ UC Berkeley" or even "Jon is @ Dwinelle Hall"

this could be integrated with the user-defined locations in gmaps; gmaps already has a vast directory of semantic location data, it can be put to good use in location-based networking/services and then mashed together with other location-based services (everyblock, etc) or location-relevant services/data (yelp, movietickets.com)
