We got our hands on the new version of popular Twitter desktop app Tweetdeck that will be delivered to all users tomorrow and we're pretty excited about what's been added.

If you've never used Tweetdeck, it's the most powerful application available for sending and receiving Twitter messages. It's about to become even more awesome.

Tweetdeck includes support for groups, for columns of persistent search results and a number of cool third party services are integrated right inside the interface. What's coming next? Language translation, StockTwits integration, forwarding by email, switching to one column view and extensive support for conversation topics by hashtag. It's quite an impressive upgrade for an already very feature-rich application.

Part of my Tweetdeck set-up, click to view full size.

Language translation is now available in the drop down "more actions" menu inside every user profile next to a tweet. It's a pretty rough translation, as these things always are - but how cool is that anyway? Twitter is a very international phenomenon - now we can grunt at each other across languages a little more effectively.

Stocktwits is a fast-growing startup that hosts conversation and news tracking around the stock market. Now Tweetdeck will let you tie in your Stocktwits account and create Friends, Portfolio, Recommended, Commentary and "all" columns. We expect that to be quite popular.

Hashtag Support comes in the form of a new drop down to the right of your message composition window, displaying one-click links to add any of your 10 most recently used hashtags. When you reply to a message that included a hashtag - that same hashtag will be automatically appended to your reply. That's going to keep conversations much more coherent.

User Search lets you set up a column to search for any username - see what people are saying to and about people of interest.

One Column View is a quick little button you can hit to zip your full screen Tweetdeck down into just one column, the easier to watch it next to a browser with. Click it again and it will expand to full size.

There are a number of other new additions, from easier group management to email forwarding of tweets to some API access improvements. There may be some changes users don't like, as well.

All we can say for now, having just used it for a little while, is that the most powerful Twitter interface available is not slowing down - it just keeps getting better.

If you'd like to befriend the ReadWriteWeb staff on Twitter here are our accounts - we'd love to meet you too!

Hi, I have a unique question (I believe) ... With tweetdeck, does it take up more resources or cpu when you have more than one twitter account connected even though you DO NOT have any collumns open related to "that particular account"? ... I'm trying to optimize it enough so I can keep it running most the time, even when I'm digging into other hardcore browsing, chatting, and email tasks.
Thanks for hitting me up to let me know. You can reach me at the listed email or you may contact me through my primary blog at manifestyourdreams.biz - God Bless, Curt

I'm not sure how to stress more strongly that the claim in the article and by "Markus Karlsson" above (that Adobe/AIR is the cause of memory leaks or other performance issues) is completely false. You're wrong if you believe this--no other way to put it.

The is absolutely nothing inherent in AIR apps that makes them hogs or cause performance issues. "Markus Karlsson" seems to imply that there's something there for Adobe to "sort out". Maybe you can be more specific.

The bottom line: developers can make bad performing apps and can create memory leaks. Developers can also make awesome high performing apps. Check out Balsamiq Mockups for just one example: http://www.balsamiq.com/

The performance issues with Tweetdeck are an inherent part of AIR / Flex applications. It's essentially down to Adobe to sort it out.

It's also part of the reason why Tweetdeck isn't the best looking application since in practice it is possible to have very good looking Air applications but they do suck up a lot of system resources over time, which is not great for an app that you always want to run in the background.

Once Adobe tackles the problem (which it seems to be ignoring) in a future Air release then the performance of apps such as Tweetdeck will improve considerably.

Tweetdeck is definitely the most powerful Twitter app around and these are wonderful new features. The only problem I have with it, as it's been mentioned before - above -, is that it lacks support for multiple accounts. I use separate accounts to twitter in 2 different languages, so until it supports that, I have to stick with other apps that already do that - like Twhirl.

Hopefully this will be included in the next upgrade. :)

I'm a big fan of Tweetdeck and these sound like great updates (though I'd mention that my preferred micro-blogging service http://www.CitySpeek.com implemented translation a few weeks ago).

I think what is really interesting here is all that Tweetdeck is doing that Twitter isn't. At what point does Tweetdeck take their tools and go home, as to say start their own micro-blogging platform? I know it sounds crazy, but stop and think about what Twitter offers that Tweetdeck can't do on their own.

Props to Tweetdeck, they keep doing things right. I'm looking forward to tomorrow.
