It may be dismal economic times, but some companies are continuing to make new hires in tech and new media. That's what we track on our Jobwire site and below you'll find aggregate hiring numbers for the first 6 weeks of the new year.

We last covered aggregate stats in the middle of December and the new numbers are similar to what we saw then. IT and software companies are hiring more than anyone else, but marketing firms are now hiring more than publishing and social media companies, a switch since our last report.

January - Feb. 16th 2009 Hires in Tech and New Media

The "Other" category includes the long tail of "hard to categorize" companies, like government hires, health care tech and gaming. Who are all these companies and people hired? You can see the lists at these links:
IT/Software
Hardware
All new hires

We didn't break out hires by job title for this report but we did when we reported hiring numbers in November and December. Just for interest, here's those numbers from that report.

Definitely interesting to see who is hiring in tech in 2009. It would also be interesting to see where tech companies are hiring for these positions.

We took a different spin on the current job market by evaluating the cities witht the lowest unemployment rate and the occupations with the highest projected growth rate. Network systems/Data Communications Analysts and Computer Software Engineers were two occupations in the high tech field with the greatest percentage projected growth from 2006 to 2016.

Mike Volpe - we do our best to scour the web to find out about new hires, but clearly we can only find a part of what's happening. We appreciate your telling us about the hires that you have, but if you could at the very least tell your other new hires to tweet, blog etc. about their new positions, we'd really appreciate it. Or you/they could use our submission form again as you have before.

This is interesting data - but I think it is only part of the picture since not all hires go though Jobwire. For instance with HubSpot, 2 of our hires are on Jobwire, but we have hired at least 7 other people in 2009 that I can think of, a lot in sales and some in development, that are not counted. We're still hiring about 2 salespeople a month. I actually think a lot of the doom and gloom being portrayed in the media today is limited to companies that unwisely overexpanded or never really had a solid business model.
