Twitter Begins Rolling Out Search and Trends

Twitter appears to be in the process of rolling out its integrated search feature, with a search box and a trends button appearing on some user profiles today. While the feature is not yet available to all users, our guess is that it's very much on the way - and soon.

The trends tab offers a drop down list of top ten trending topics (Chris Brown being the current most discussed topic), and the search box allows you to search in real time on any topic. Refresh your screen to see if you have the option yet, or take a look at our screen shots below.

The new search feature is something we've all been eagerly awaiting, especially since Twitter's announcement last month; clearly they've now "kicked the tires" enough and it's ready for the world.

I can't believe it has taken them so long to finally add search. I would think they could have added a search box quickly and easily months - or even longer - ago. I can't think of any reason they needed to wait on that to implement whatever they finally roll out.

I like that they added the search box. Not clear why the search results don;t have an expand for the tinyurls. The expand for tinyurls is already there on search.twitter.com but is absent http://twitter.com/search. Hope they add it soon.

The new features work great. This will be a considerable assistance for new users. As they will now be able to easily follow trending topics accelerating the learning curve and exposing them to active users to connect with. More of my friends are trying Twitter every day. These feature should help.

Just a little more thought could have been put into this. How about placing the search box below the Following | Followers | Updates and above Home? IN the side bar that is already there? Plenty of room for it, instead of grabbing more screen real estate. With nothing but a huge empty space below the RSS feed link, there's no reason to step on more of a user's background image. Push the Home tab down just a little bit.

Fairly lame release if you ask me. Weaker than Summize was 18 months ago.

How hard is it to add "limit to my followers", "limit to userxyzs followers", or "rank by authority", like the search engine Dare Obasanjo produced in a weekend.

It's certainly a clever move to add popular searches, since these will have been cached to hell, so most of the processing naughtiness will have been committed to memory...
