1 Billion Apps Later - Here Are Some of Our Favorites

Today, Apple announced that its customers have now downloaded a whopping one billion applications from its App Store. Here at ReadWriteWeb, quite a few of us have iPhones, so we thought that this would be a good time to feature some of our favorite apps. We download and test a lot of iPhone apps, but here are the ones that have stood the test of time for us. The App Store is now home to over 35,000 applications, so this is obviously only a small selection of applications, but these are the apps that we don't hesitate to recommend to our friends.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm the Community Manager for Box.net. But, I can say that I love the Box.net app regardless because it not only extends the storage capacity of my phone, but it lets me view and share files stored in the cloud wherever I am.

I'll second Groundwork for Basecamp. It's wicked fast and easy to use.

Netnewswire is great too because it syncs with the desktop client so that articles read in one place are read in the other too.

Slacker Radio is pretty cool (similar to Pandora) and WSJ's new app is well done.

My favorite is the app my company created: PimpMyNews - it converts text news and blogs to audio, so you can listen to them on the go.

Most used apps:
• Ambiance - We use it every night to help our 4 mos. old fall asleep
• Facebook - For a quick peak at what my friends are up to
• NY Times - A tad slow, but always good content
• Tetris - Classic gaming on the go

New favorite app:
• Dial 9 - A Smart Visual Dialer - I'm a bit biased on this one.

I can't live without my Weather Channel App, I use Facebook Mobile more than I'd like to admit - but my heart is, of course, with my OWN first App that just launched, and the only one of its kind in the App store - check out "BumperCars" everyone!
