Posters on the wall, teen magazines, boom boxes playing the same stupid songs over and over again (automatically!) - that's not a sustainable situation, by definition. That's teenage living and that's what MySpace built its huge site on. Just like being a teenager, MySpace is something that most people grow out of. Today marked an important point in the internet's move beyond MySpace.

The company <strike>ushered Tom out the door today from President into an advisory role</strike> is in talks with Tom about a new role if he leaves his post as President, and replaced its CEO with former Facebook business exec Owen Van Natta. Increased revenue isn't really what MySpace needs, if it's to stay strong it needs to stop bleeding users. That's not likely.

Michael Arrington has been following the business moves closely and reports a very sorry state of affairs behind the scenes at MySpace. It doesn't make sense to us to put former Facebook businessman, Van Natta, in charge of a site that has made far more money than Facebook but has had its head handed to it in terms of user experience and now growth. It's not a business problem that MySpace has, it's a core user experience problem. That's of more interest to us anyway.

Earlier this week, Jason Calacanis offered 10 ideas he thought that the new CEO of MySpace should act on first. It's a very good list: focus on dominating mobile, build up gaming, start a virtual currency, etc. It's hard to think of better ideas, in fact. One source told VentureBeat's Eric Eldon that "the only thing that can save MySpace now is buying Twitter."

Those are all relatively daring, smart ideas. But, none of them will work. That's ok, MySpace was an important part of the social web's early history. Its time has passed, though.

MySpace is an embarrassment for most people on the web. Many people feel like it's a bratty kid sister wearing too little clothing. Danah boyd famously wrote in 2007 that the MySpace/Facebook split was largely about economic class. That may not be so true anymore. (See boyd's response in an update below.) Give most people another option and they are going to choose it. Social networking used to be just for teenagers, but those kids are growing up and everyone else is joining in the activity. Not on MySpace, though.

As Eldon points out in his coverage, recent Facebook redesigns have brought new focus on sharing content to that site. Twitter has captured the public's imagination as well and it is all about active sharing of personal news between contacts.

MySpace's core nature is to express yourself into a void and hope people come to visit your page and check it out. The relatively recent additions of status updates and news feeds feel tacked on and superficial. MySpace clearly hoped that many of its users would write long-form blog posts but the time investment required to use that feature is much more arduous than the quick and easy publishing on Facebook and Twitter.

On some important level, MySpace is a lot like GeoCities. GeoCities closed its doors yesterday.

Facebook and Twitter may or may not stick around longer than MySpace has. MySpace will probably always be able to serve a sizable constituency in between children and adults. But, the momentum has left MySpace and churn in this market will probably keep Facebook from holding on to it for more than a few years as well.

None of this is news, MySpace went cold quite awhile ago. Tom hasn't updated his status message in a week and a half. He knows what's going on. Putting a business guy from Facebook in charge just makes it official.

Update: MySpace Communications emailed after this post was written to let us know that Tom updated his status message today after all, and that going a week and a half is nothing unusual for him. Point taken.

Update: Microsoft's danah boyd sent us this response. "As for now, the 20-something MySpace crowd is using Twitter but the teen crowd is not. (Many of the 20-somethings even point to their MySpace profile as their URL in Twitter.) There is still a strong divide amongst the teens regarding MySpace and Facebook. MySpace is not dead among many teens (and it still comes up in my fieldwork... last set of interviews with teens being a month ago). Given what I've seen from this crowd and their attitudes towards those who use Facebook, I don't expect there to be a switch to Facebook any time soon. That said, there is always the possibility of something new that does not have so much baggage. I've been waiting for the "next thing" for this crowd but I haven't seen it yet."

Has anyone ever got to the notion that Social Networking just takes away from real life? Most of my friends that joined up to all the sites have one think in common. They are boring. No talent. And try to be the Jock they never were.

I keep my page on Myspace for a reason. Free Picture hosting. And the occasional look into the past. Man I had some great times and got laid more times then I ever thought possible.

Man I met some cool ass people. Had some Wild Party's, And will never forget how cool it WAS to mod your page.

Not so much anymore. I would rather just host a page that really was different, but who cares? I would rather be me in real life then some poster on the net. Besides. Myspace has one thing that will really take heed in a few years. The famous people who have died "online"

All those groups are gone too. And really, It was cool way back when, But it should just be archived for now. Myspace, by taking down all that stuff is getting rid of the thing that made it even worth while. The Nostalgia.

TO bad I'm not the new CEO!

I would of encouraged people to join Facebook, And did something really new.

Appreciate the Past. And stop with all the Dumb, short sited crap they are doing. Oh well. That is life.

BTW, Still no facebook. Youtube is my place to be.

I have never been one to follow the pack. Myspace works for my music, period. Not only that, it's been a fantastic networking tool which has brought me many amazing experiences which would never have happened without the site and no, facebook hasn't come close to impacting my music in any sort of way. Because of myspace, I have collaborated with some very prominent people in the music industry. As well, I have sold copies of my music internationally on myspace because I am able to put a paypal link right on my page. It serves me well. Yes, I do notice how fickle our society is with the site and like cattle, so many have abandoned what they once loved.. But really, this is a pattern in society that repeats itself so should I be surprised? No. I follow my own heart. I have myself on facebook too with a music page and wow, I had to jump through hoops to have a music player on there by joining reverb nation, uploading music there, then connecting that with iLike where I was able to generate some code to embed a header with my photo on it, above the iLike music player which appears as a tab which is the landing page on my music page.. Way more complicated than myspace and so people don't generally set this up for their band page. Plus, I can't see there how many plays I get, or visits.. I can't track from where people are visiting. Whereas myspace provides all of this... I don't get as many song plays now on myspace but I still get visits daily from around the globe and visits to my myspace blog postings are regular and haven't declined, likely based on what I have chosen to talk about.. When I google topics that are written about in my blog, I have seen the google results list my blog posting on myspace on the first page results. That's pretty good. I don't like how myspace has changed recently to attempt to be more like facebook on its home page. I like a lot of the ideas in these comments listed and I hope myspace is fishing around for thoughts by people so they can learn from these ideas and build upon them. It could lead to potential growth... Myspace needs to behave like beer which loses its hip and then suddenly blasts the masses with some stellar campaign that ripples out and lures people back in. It's mind blowing that they haven't done this yet. I do think though that it will need to rest a bit in order to make a huge impact on such a campaign, demonstrating positive and sexy change which would result in great rekindled interest from old and new users. It's interesting how myspace bashers who love facebook so much say myspace is lame for how people chose to communicate on there. I see the whole applications thing very lame on facebook. I don't need to learn what sort of star or pirate or poet from history I would be, nor do I need to live in la la land in some pseudo farm fantasy. It's pathetic! People do need to get out more. Shop in record stores. Buy music. Keep their local economies going. But indeed, online social networking has great perks to it. I've made some great friends on myspace who I now know in the flesh, ones near and far away. I could write a book on the positive change myspace has made on my life in music and I ] will share that story soon! My debut album is coming out with some fantastic people accompanying me, all thanks to myspace!
Facebook is great for my friends and family. I find all the event notifications just as overwhelming as I always have on myspace. I don't have time to read all the status updates like some people I know do. Real friends don't rely on status updates. It's easy though to keep in the loop there with people I know.. Myspace was that way too until some of them left for facebook. I am a graphic designer and I really like the individuality on myspace.. even the bad layouts with bright green background and electric purple type. This doesn't bug me because I love our diverse planet. I'm not fickle enough to let a bit of advertising get under my skin either because I am comfortable with who I am and I understand that marketing is everywhere... If I want away from ads, I go for a walk in nature.

MySpace is dead. Even some of my friends who were hardcore MySpace addict moved on to Facebook. This article got it right. MySpace is like GeoCities. If anyone remembers it. The thing I remember about MySpace is the ability to glitter your background. And this is its downfall. Toooooooo many people have tooooooooo many colorful background that I can't hardly read their profile or stop their loud music that turn on automatically when you visit their profile. Also, MySpace didn't have a live stream like Facebook's wall. And this is where I drop MySpace for FaceBook.

MySpace use to be top 10 most visited site (according to Alexa.com) and now it's not even top 100. That's a very sad thing. I know MySpace still have 200+ millions users, but probably half of them are inactive.

If MySpace want to live. They should just buy Twitter or ...PAY THE USERS VIA ADVERTISING REVENUE EACH TIME SOMEONE CLICK ON THEIR PROFILE...HEHEHEH...or maybe just revenue sharing if someone visiting your profile click on one of the ads. This would make me go back to MySpace.

As everyone mentioned, people from MySpace has grown up and moved on to college and this is where FaceBook comes in. Twitter on the other hand, is for college drunk activities.

I disagree, myspace is most definately not dead. It's just in a temporary rut. For people who don't wish "to wait five minutes for pictures to load on ones profile just to read the basic info" Then put your settings to lite view. But I DO think the ex fb as new ceo is idiotic. Most people I know are only leaving myspace because it's getting too complex because SOMEONE -hint hint- Is making it look too much like facebook so they think "Oh why not make a full on switch then. Myspace FaceBook and Twitter have different use. Myspace- Express individuality[ mostly shown on ones profile] or for music. Fb- Communication with people you know And Twitter- making statements or asking questions for basically anyone to answer or reply to. They need to do everyone a favor and just stop trying to mesh, because Its confusing to some people and rather irritating. But I do enjoy all three. I'm not bashing any of them or picking sides, I'm just throwing out my views as someone who enjoys all three of the sites.

at last check, they still had more users than twitter and facebook combined.

You must be having a laugh, when was this 'last check', 2006???!!!

Current approximate figures for users -

Facebook = 400,000,000
MySpace = 130,000,000
Twitter = 75,000,000

Source:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites

(I know Wikipedia is not usually a reliable source, but on this subject, it is correct).

MySpace IS dead. It has been for some time, at least 2 years by my reckoning. Facebook is the king of the internet social networking sites. I personally don't like (or use) twitter, but I would wager that it recives many, many times the number of sign-ins from it's users on a day-by-day basis than MySpace does, even though it has just over 50% of it's registered users. It can be seen from a lot of the comments above that many former MySpace users now use FB/Twitter regularly whilst never/rarely signing onto their MS accounts anymore (despite still leaving them open). How many comments above are their stating the opposite? I would assert that many of the 130,000,000 MS account holders are 'Dormant' accounts, whilst a larger percentage of the 475,000,000 FB/Twitter account holders could be accurately classified as 'Active' users.

You all right in a sense. i agree with respondents 48. and 72. However, i've always thought that myspace problem was poor marketing and promotion. it was in existence several years before i signed up and "nobody" knew what it was back then. right now, i've been a member for 6 years & counting now. believe it or not, i still believe they have that same problem still (marketing and promoting their brand). for the millions of users twitter, facebook and myspace has, there are millions and millions more of people who don't use the computer at all for social networking purposes and they could care less. the people in broadcast and journalism, as well as companies like twitter and facebook have done a excellent job in promoting the twitter and facebook brand. but, if you're thinking "myspace" is done or dead as you say, you're sadly mistakened. you people who log into to your myspace accounts on occasion, who don't interact, network, socialize, or whatever, with 15-20 friends, "do" need to be on facebook, not "myspace". you're not using the meduim correctly and therefore should expect anything from your myspace account at all. use facebook: (for staying connected with family & friends) use twitter: (for news, updates & quick information) and your myspace: (for doing what twitter and facebook can do combined, especially, if your a multi-taskers or in the entertainment) with the age of the internet, film & music promotion and distribution, anyone who has a clue about anything would'nt consider myspace dead at all. in fact, with the right direction you can even say they have'nt even started yet. at last check, they still had more users than twitter and facebook combined. though, twitter and facebook do have more revenue. what i will say is as a "professional adult", depending on your industry and what you may or may not have been using your myspace account for, you may be right, it's dead for you. but, for everybody else that is'nt the case. i'll stick with my myspace account, until a new, improved version comes. sorry facebook. you just too bland. i don't get it.

Myspace is definitely NOT dead. Its funny how the same people who used to live out their entire existence on Myspace are bashing it now -- with venom and malice(hehe). Myspace today is just not as popular because it has competition that it did not have a few years prior. The novelty that it used to be is no longer there because people have lots of choices now. However, they still have tens of millions of members and everybody knows what Myspace is. Myspace just needs to get more targeted. They need to make it a place that teenagers can't live without and pay less attention to the adults. They could do things like getting rid of the tons of non functioning groups they have and find a more efficient way of dealing with spam. Its also too much of an "everything site". On the rare occasion that I go to Myspace these days I feel a little overwhelmed. Its like I have to sieve through a series of completely useless functions to find something that is of use. If they can just make it more focused they would be hot again because the infrastructure is still there.

For me, everyone is on facebook now. Hardly anyone goes on myspace. Now, I am in high school. I am not an adult so I really don't know what adults are doing but the majority of adults I know would not even be able to figure out myspace... maybe I just live in a stupid area...? I find that facebook is easier and cleaner to use. It doesn't take a week to load, mostly because it's advertising mechanisms are simple and not bloated /stuffed in every corner of your page. It's so much easier to "socialize" on facebook. Myspace is messy and annoying. The only real socializing is looking at the status updates, and there's twitter for that. I use last.fm for all my music needs. For some people, maybe, myspace is "alive" but I know, I used to go on it everyday and now I hardly do.

Myspace has been dead for a lot longer than you seem to believe. I used it after I was already on facebook for years in college, and for some reason you write that Myspace was around before or longer than Facebook, but, if that is in fact true, Facebook was way more popular that Myspace in the beginning. Myspace has been dead for about two years now, and ninety percent of my friends have deleted their profiles in the past year.

Facebook is ten times the site that Myspace ever was, that is a fact, so this is clearly an opinionated piece of journalism. Sure Myspace had its appeal with the decor and the music, but people just simply became tired of dealing with crap from people that they didn't know and waiting six minutes for pages to load towards the end when its capacity had seemingly been reached.

Side note, twitter is also a poor site, with very little importance and its popularity still boggles the mind. There is little communication and simply status updates, weird, wonder where they got that idea? Facebook! For all the banter and lack of research within this article, you forget to report that Facebook was the leader in the innovation of the social network. In the last year, Myspace has done everything that it can possibly do to copy and add the best of what facebook has to offer. Instant messaging, online friend detail, comments on other comments, games, etc.

Every friend that I have is on facebook, not one of them is still on myspace. Keep the laughter to a minimum, regardless of what you may think of the sample size, seeing as I am only one person, I am sure the percentage is the same with many others as well. We were all ones avid uses, but it became lame very very quick.

One more thing, if these Myspace users "wink wink" that you say wont shift to myspace, do you really think that ninety-nine percent of the users didn't have both accounts already, and when the bleeding occurred from Myspace, did it happen to Facebook? Just a thought, check the facts and don't write crap about something you don't know anything about. Clearly the writer of this piece has never used either or they would have known.

PS. I don't really like facebook either, but this piece of editorial crap needed to be served for lack of research.

MySpace is dead, no matter what its supporters say. It is useless as a social networking tool, because its networking functions are very weak. Artists need to move somewhere else, too. Whenever I try to use MySpace to find new music, I find myself buried in crappy GarageBand-made music. Its music portion just doesn't work well. imeem and last.fm work much better and are easier to use, but unfortunately not many people use those services.

MySpace should convert to an all-music site that is easier to use. Profiles should just be about the user's musical tastes and track what they're listening to, etc. Finding the music you are looking for needs to be easier. The MySpace interface just doesn't work.

Myspace is definitely dead. I have a profile, but only check it once every couple of weeks because there's just no activity on there anymore. Not because Facebook really offers anything better, but because Myspace caved into the record companies and just got so commercial that it got annoying. From the annoying pushing of every RAP/R&B piece of "white noise" trash out there, to the disabling of playlists that people put a lot of time into, to annoying ads every time your music plays...Myspace's greed trampled all over the toes of their users. Sure, they're still making money, however, there is always a delay between the decline in the value of things and the point when dumb ad execs figure out they're pissing their money away. It just feels like it's owned by corporate Hollywood and just like corporate Hollywood and the crap they push on us, it just feels tacky, silly and fake.

Yes , people grow out of that. But at the same time, the content offers nothing and it doesn't take long for even the biggest vanity whore to get burned out. Facebook is more appealing for family networks, businesses and non-profits. At its core, it is a better networking tool;easier to use and navigate and stripped down so that users don't get scared away. The dirty secret is that its also a far better data mining tool, and many businesses have started figuring that out.

Well, yes, the internet is growing up. "Maturing" you might say, and as it does, I expect to see more variation in the "hot thing" of the minute. As the audience becomes broader and less susceptible to teen-age mood swings, I'm sure there will be market share for many different networks. Expecting everyone to migrate en masse is a sort of herd think that I hope the community will grow out of eventually and let each find their audience. So long as it continues to work well for whoever it still works for, it is, at some level, a success.

MySpace seems dead because it's not the kind of site journalists or bloggers use. Facebook is easy-to-use, with a clean layout, so it's used more by adults, professionals and trendy Web 2.0 types. But MySpace still has users, even if TechCrunch doesn't report on it. It's a similar situation with Twitter - it got big because journalists and bloggers could use it and then bang on about it. Same with Second Life, actually - how many more articles about SL do you see in print media compared to WoW?

Really, I'm starting to see Web 2.0 as a rather in-bred subculture, where being talked about is more important than actually making money. Articles on TechCrunch are not directly correlated with user numbers, which is not directly correlated with making money. It's like the bubble all over again, except at least this time it's limited to a relatively small number of companies that have fallen for their own marketing hype.

I hate the Facebook v myspace argument as they are completely different entities

Myspace is far from dead but Facebook has turned into a better social networking platform to stay in touch with people you already know

In Scotland facebook still comes 2nd to Bebo at present although that seems to be changing with people starting to switch to Facebook and more people spending time on Twitter as well

i agree with the earlier post, People who dont actually like discovering new music for themselves may feel myspace isnt for them but just because you dont like sports doesnt mean all the sports websites are dead

Their is people who are happy to be force fed X-Factor cover-versions through commercial radio and their is those who like to discover new music and keep up top date with their favorite artists

Myspace will always generate mass traffic because it is the definitive site for all musicians and fans and music is the number 1 hobbie/past-time on the planet

Thats not to mention those who have grown up with myspace as a social-networking tool. People dont like change. Theirs just as many myspace users who hate the facebook set-up as their is the other way round.

Its the equivalent of getting a brand new mobile phone, It can be frustratingly snail-paced getting used to something new.

Myspace has been a godsend for artists getting feedback and getting their music out there.
It also connects people with simular interests and opinions all over the world.

Facebook is brilliant for connecting with friends.

Twitter is cutting edge for news and opinions.

You cant compare the three as they offer three completely different user experiences

Add to that the audio player that kicks off whether I want it or not... MySpace hasn't adapted with the times, and I find myself anxious every time I "have to" visit a user's page, it's a major waste of time and computing power. If ever a site needed to revamp it's approach, it's MySpace.

Personally both MySpace & Facebook work well for me, I am a music promoter in south Florida showcasing local, national and international songwriters in a monthly event. I don't get caught up in some of the silly socializing, games, etc on FB & MyS, strickly use it as a business tool in promoting the shows and securing potential songwriters for future shows. I can also post pixs & videos of the shows which also help in promoting the event. They are both excellent for me in this sense, I have connected with people from the past who were/are involved in the music biz as well as meeting a tremendous amount of songwriters and musicians that I hadn't previously known or known of!
So at least for now, I'm pleased!
While I understand the more mature crowd moving over (I use Facebook to (re-)connect with old school friends and such) I think the people striving to make art / music / etc. will still concentrate on myspace. So: myspace is not dead to me, but I think for some of you it is; undiscovered / independent music is dead and has always been dead to you. It's something you don't take the time to discover for yourself.

MySpace is far from dead... and race and class is a real issue in social networking and every time I read one these types of blogs written by priviledged, white male bloggers who no doubt do not use Myspace:

http://www.readwriteweb.com/about_marshall.php

I cringe. You're elitist, but you live in FB/Twitter bubble and so you don't know it. And as a daily user of Myspace... teens are last group I have seen using MySpace for years now and folks of color are everywhere... almost even dominant. And you do realize you can't trust age stats on MySpace, right? Being "18" means nothing. If you used MySpace... were a part of the community... you'd know why.

Tragically, in your snobbery because "MySpace is ugly" your creating a meme/myth that MySpace is dying... one of the best online communities ever... in soul and spirit, but newcomers to the Web... believe this crap.

Get some people who actually use MySpace to write about how it evolving.. my use died off for awhile when I foudn Twitter... but it's up again.... especially with the launch of their new tool bar... which no blogger wrote about, but the Digg toolbar... wow... that was news. I also finally made the switch from iTunes... to downloading music from MySpace. Much better experience.

And recent ComScore data completely contradicts everything you have said.

Snooze... white, male, priviledged bloggers... god... we need some new voices in the social networking space. Listening RWW, Mashable, TechCrunch?

The only thing I agree with you on is they definitely should not hire any ex-FB staff... Facebookers don't get MySpace... they just don't. It's over their heads.

I don't agree completely. Of course you want to have as much growth as you can, but I'd rather have a strong monetization strategy for a smaller number of users than a massive user base with no viable moneymaking scheme. I like to point to Second Life as a good example of this. They were once the darling of the Web heads (not Spider Man),and corporations jumped in like gangbusters. It stopped being the "it" site after a while, but its still generating a decent amount of revenue off its small number of users (it's supposedly profitable).

Show the VC the money, or these non profitable bussinesses with an INCREDIBLE networking effect will start to die like tribe.net (which I still think is the best social networking site even if their down time killed the network)

It does have some revenue as John points out, which is more than what can be said for a lot of other websites. Myspace Music is still the go-to place for bands and their fans, despite the arrival of several competitors throughout the months, even *years*. The "if you're not growing, you're dead" mantra is horribly shortsighted. I may not love Myspace myself, but as long as you can serve a core constituency of users and still earn some revenue, you're still alive and have a future.

Same thing will happen to Twitter and Facebook. Social media audiences are fickle. As soon as the crowd takes over the early adopters want something else, something edgy. What will be remarkable is when a social media platform dies and makes a comeback.

While I do agree with some of the sentiments, come one now, MySpace isn't dead. Yeah, it's not the trendiest 2.0 freemium, no vowel site, but it's approaching nearly $1 billion in revenue. If that's dead, than Twitter is beyond dead. I guess I'm saying many tech sites like to get jazzed up about services and Web sites with no real business model and I don't know how smart that is. We've already been through two booms and busts, and the companies that survived are the ones who were able to effectively monetize.
