If you've ever been to a conference or some sort of large event, you've probably seen a live Twitter stream in action. Up on a big screen in a prominent place, often the stage itself, the live stream tracks the relevant hashtags or keywords about the event, be it a conference, a panel, a meetup, or some other sort of heavily-tweeted gathering.

But sometimes there's an issue with displaying the raw, unfiltered tweets in this way: they can be disruptive. All it takes is one Twitter user trying to be funny - or, worse, a troll saying something rude - to take the discussion off course. Now there's a new solution to deal with this problem: Paratweet.

Paratweet is a new application that lets organizers moderate tweets about their event before they hit the big screen. With this, the potential disruptions are nipped in the bud, so they don't become the focus instead of whatever's happening on stage.

Using Paratweet

After signing up for a Paratweet account, you create a new event, set up some keywords or hashtags to monitor, and you can even enter an onscreen question for the audience to respond to, if desired.

As the tweets begin to stream in, you simply approve or reject them by clicking the green plus sign or red X as necessary. If you don't want to manually moderate tweets, you can choose to auto approve them instead. After you have a few tweets approved, you hit the button marked "Live Display Control" to start streaming the approved tweets to the "Live Display Application."

This "Live Display Application" is an Adobe AIR app designed just for Paratweet and it's meant to be run on the computer connected to the projector, LCD, or CCTV. Also, because you log in to the AIR app with your Paratweet account to pull the relevant tweets, you don't have to perform the moderation on the same PC as the one being used for display, although you certainly could.

Why Paratweet?

Paratweet isn't the first application to deliver Twitter moderation functionality - Twubs, for example, also offers a live events app with this capability. However, Paratweet offers a couple of extra features which gives it an edge.

For one, it includes a profanity filter which you can turn on or off as desired - an item that was definitely on the wish list of pastors who wanted to use Twitter during their sermons or other church events, like youth group meetings. It also links the moderation app and display app via a secret code for extra security in order to make sure no one but those approved to do so can moderate the tweets. The code is unique to each event.

Unlike using search.twitter.com, Paratweet lets you track multiple search terms or hashtags at once. As the tweets come in, you can optionally play or pause the stream - helpful if the speaker wants to respond to something on the screen without the distraction of more tweets streaming by.

Unfortunately, all this Twitter goodness doesn't come cheap. Paratweet offers two pricing plans: $299 for 6 months and one event (which you can use over and over) or $599 for 6 months and 3 separate events. The $599 plan also includes the onscreen question feature, something unfortunately not found in the less expensive plan. Alternately, you can save by purchasing a yearly license for $999.

To try Paratweet for yourself, you can sign up here.

2) Fails in its attempt to exert total control on human behavior. Main selling point is Iranian-esque censorship
3) Offers what is already available for free with simple hashtag

Advice to ParaTweet - you are just encouraging people to create their parallel event hashtag, free of your control, when you should be encouraging people to participate without censorship.

Hey Sarah, thanks so much for the writeup. And, Todd, thank you for your comments.

We've certainly heard a lot about the pricing since we launched, and we've got some ideas in the works to create a more flexible scale. Right now those prices are for essentially unlimited events and participants – our early customers have been large conferences and the like. But we've got some plans in the works to make our pricing a lot more flexible for smaller use cases.

As to the purpose of filtering, we're all with you in idea of embracing open, free speech and participation. Auto-approval was a priority for our management interface – you can turn it on and walk away and have everything show up on screen.

Ultimately, the amount of moderation is up to the conference organizers. We have found that it really comes in handy when you're doing things like moderating a Q&A session. Moderation allows conference organizers to pick out the specific questions from the rest of the backchannel.

Another place where filtering comes in handy is to filter out spam. When we were used at a 3,500 person conference, the first on-screen question put their hash tag into Twitter's trending topics. You'd be surprised how much spamming goes on once a search term gets up there.

Anyway, thanks again for the comments, please do keep them coming. We're excited that people are enthusiastic about using an app to easily get their Twitter searches up on the big screen, and we really value all the great feedback.

If you've got any other questions or feedback, or would like access to a demo account, please do feel free to email us at info@paratweet.com.

first as the CEO of Twubs.com, let me say, we love the guys at Paratweet. They have built a good product.

But, ther eis a reason that John Saddington from ChurchCruch.com called Twubs the "most feature rich live event suite ever". He's played with the product. http://churchcrunch.com/2009/06/24/twubs-com-making-the-most-of-hashtags-best-twitter-live-event-suite/

Twubs does offer a complete conference suite. The package does not focus solely on live moderation. Our goal at Twubs is to create relevant conversation around aggregated content right now.

This means, the Twubs solution is built for pre, during and post conference conversation. Live moderation is not the only solution we offer.

As a lay pastor, I fully understand the need for security related to unwanted words. While we are adding a word filter in the coming week, we empower the user to ONLY display approved tweets. so, this is not a "necessary" feature in comparing "live moderation".

Additional features not currently offered by any other provider include:
- tweetup and event scheduling
- the ability to show video and photos "in-line' in the feed. This is not available in any product built on the Adobe Air platform
- A Q & A module
- Branding - we believe the event organizer, church, conference or whomever, should be able to "own" their hashtag. So, with Twubs, we can specifically assign an admin that has full management related their feed. With that comes branding, see http;//twubs.com/bidwell. While this feature is in beta and in use, it is being "released" next week.
- the ability to have unlimited events running live simultaneously with their own unique twitter feeds using the same "macro-hashtag"
- Live video and presentation streaming, simultaneously, for different conference breakouts happening at the same time
- "Alias" hashtags empowering the combination of multiple hashtags to be streamed together.

The author mentioned a solid feature for a live moderation product is security. At Twubs, security is our first priority. The event organizer/Twub administrator has the sole authority to determine who can and cannot do moderation. Twubs was built on insuring the security of the content being displayed and making every attempt to put the event organizer in control.

Finally, the author mentions "cost". Right now, Twubs is free. The entire conference suite. Something to consider.

Ultiately, this is not about Paratweet vs. Twubs. As I mentioned, Micah, Chris and crew have done a great job with the Paratweet product.

My goal is to insure that the information being stated about Twubs is correct. It comes down to which solution is right for your conference.

If "conversation" is important and connecting your people before during and after your event is a value, then, Twubs is a good solution.
