These people aren't talking about theoretical physics or a magical world of fairies and gnomes - they're talking about information that could offer more context to traditionally physical lived experience. Augmented Reality (AR) is the phrase being used and this practice of making layers of data available on top of real world experiences could be a big one soon.

Improvements in geolocation, bandwidth, mobile devices and APIs are the foundation of this feeling that a useful Augmented Reality may be more realistic today than ever before.

AR isn't new, but it's been pretty hokey so far. Now there's a movement to make it really worth doing. It's still such a fanciful prospect that we decided to publish our wish list for Augmented Reality apps we hope someone builds. We also posted some of the most interesting recent AR videos from around the web. Check it all out and share your thoughts.

Place Data

The most common dreams for AR are probably concerning historical and other data about locations. Dutch software firm SPRXmobile will soon release an Android mobile app called Layar that will display real estate and restaurant information on top of the view through your phone's camera as you pan around a city. That's an exciting platform and one that many people are hoping will go global and be available on other phones soon.

We would love to be able stand at an intersection and learn about the past and present owners of the buildings around us and about news events that have occurred within sight (Outside.in's iPhone app does this, but has performance issues and is limited in scope). ReadWriteWeb writer Sarah Perez says she'd like to visit the location of a historic military battle and view a re-enactment of the battle on some device, not just read a posted placard about the place's history. Nokia's Ian Kennedy told us he fantasizes about being able to look at a building and stream crowd-sourced audio commentary on the history of the place.

How about an iPhone app that pulls from census and Data.gov APIs - say the neighborhood you're thinking of renting a house in made most of its political donations to the Republican Party and has had 3 major fines assessed for toxic spills in the last year.

Greg Smith points to Yanko Design's theoretical Third Eye, an electronic monocle that can be turned between "tourist" and "consumer" filters for information placed on top of the places it is pointed at.

How did this man make friends in the first place?

Above: Tonchidot's mysterious product hasn't been heard from again since appearing at the TechCrunch 50 conference and some suspect it was never real. Reports of a large established Japanese mobile company developing the same kind of application surfaced just this afternoon on Asiajin, one of the leading English-language tech blogs about Japan.

Find My Keys or Car

How about an app that lets you capture and remember the location of your keys, car, or anything else you might have trouble finding later? Konstantin Gonikman says he'd like a whole Augmented Reality catalog of everything in his house for easy retrieval.

Shopping!

Face Recognition and People Search

Several people we talked to wanted some kind of people info made available for situations like seeing someone but not remembering who they are! Why limit it to people you already know, though? Those tiny conference name tags could be a thing of the past. How about being able to bring up all a persons' public social media profile links just by looking at them through your mobile phone's camera? That would be great.

The person next to you...is a zombie.

Control-F For Offline Print

If you work online a lot, you may have already found yourself subconsciously trying to hit "control-F" when reading the newspaper to try and find words on the page. It can be frustrating to have to rely on antiquated if charming technologies like the index in a book. I would gladly pay a small extra fee for every book I buy in order to have access to full text search of that book on my phone.

We don't know what exactly is going on here, but it looks cool.

What About You?

What layers of information or user experiences would you like to see come out of the Augmented Reality world? Just watch out you don't ask for what Sean Canton said he wanted out of AR today: "I'd like some rose colored glasses that make everything seem ok."

Awesome Geordi La Forge spray painted stencil at the top: "Chief Engineer" CC from Flickr user striatic.

Riot 1831! is an AR audio re-enactment of the Queen Square riots in Bristol England, created in 2004 using professional voice talent and sound effects. It was developed on the Mscape platform and playable on GPS-capable windows mobile devices. Of course you have to go to Bristol to experience it.

Inspired by your previous post about Layar I made a post on uses in the events industry. A small recap:

- Registering attendees with Face Recognition and associating online social profiles with their virtual badge sounds like a plan. We could soon experiment a live twitter where we can point our camera to an attendee and visualize balloons with thoughts from twitter.

- We could also think about associating a registered attendee with a particular networking/dating need and point the camera at the room to find our matching profile.

- Needless to mention the immediate benefits in terms of Health and Safety as well as logistics. Integrating the floorplan into the application would make it easy to find our way in a crowded exhibition.

- Sponsors at trade shows would be extremely happy if visitors could point their camera at the stand to download all the relevant info as well as reviews and opinions, or maybe special discounts.

- What about pointing the camera to a speaker during a session and be informed about books, shared online presentations and recorded sessions.

I'd like augmented reality that integrates with videoconferencing/videophone so that I can see the person (or avatar) I'm talking to in the environment that I'm in, and they can see it too (i. e. we're both in the same location, one augmented into it, and one not - choice of which) and let _both_ of us have all the place data, twitter bubbles over other people's heads, etc... information. This would make it easier to have all this AR stuff be useful during a phone call (that is what phones are for, after all...). It would also allow for vicarious tourism much better - why bother looking at the slideshow of photos later when you can experience it in real time during the time of the travels?

It would also be nice if this could be made (optionally) social so that the person I'm talking to could be seen augmented into other people's views as well, so we could recover the idea that when a person is talking that they're talking to someone and we can see who it is. Even interacting with them via IM or Facebook chat or something (Skype conference call?) Could be nice too in some circumstances.

I realize this may sould a bit out there, but this would actually be more than just a mash-up or a shortcut for a search, URL entry, or human interaction. This would be an enhancement to human interaction possibilities.

I've written a few posts about Augmented Reality in ads (The Future Of Ads - Augmented Reality) and think that the key to augmented reality is to go beyond just the 'wow' factor and actually find useful ways of integrating the technology into a larger experience.

The list that you've put together is great, and I especially like the idea of adding information to the areas around us when we're in a new place, or just want to learn something new about a familiar area. I also think that augmented reality gaming will be big soon, since it can add a competitive layer onto just about anything. I imagine walking down the street and having to snipe bad guys as they pop up from behind buildings or pass by in a bus window.

There are definitely some cool possibilities out there though, so I just hope someone's working on them now so that we can start to see AR put to good use in the near future.

Great post!

We have been working in this area for the past few years to develop a immersive mobile device which morphs you into 2D video and films or photos.

We basically break this into four types of devices:

Non immersive systems like Layar, Seer from IBM and the first which mobizity/Wikitude.

Immersive 2D like our project: http://www.cinespace.eu

Immersive 3D from quilted 2D: Moving Photosynth and things like Atlanta 4D into an in situ device.

Immersive 3D: Using a complete 3D model in situ.

The technology is all coming together. Now we just need some world class content!

Best Regards,

Doing patterns recognition in live video, to recognize faces or objects is very CPU intensive. You also need to store the faces database on the device for pattern comparison, if it's the entire Facebook database, you may need more storage space than the current 32 Gb of the latest 3GS. So I have serious doubts about feasability with the current iPhone hardware. You could send the video on a server for server side face recognition, but video would consume a lot of upload bandwidth, and would only work over wifi.

To locate your keys and other passive objects, putting them an RFID sticker would be a possible approach. You would do a triangulation of the intensity of the RFID response signal when moving around or measure the signal at least from 3 points in your house with your iPhone. The more the 3 measurement points are far from each others, the better precision in the location, provided that you still get an RFID signal... Not for tomorrow as beside being not very practical for the user, it's a complex algorithms to implement, radio signals are modified by walls, and today's iPhone have no RFID support.

Today AR technologies allows to overlay 3D animated objects on top of a video and anchored those in 3D to the real world. It use the iPhone AGPS, accelerometer and compass to sense the real world XZ location (no sensor for height yet), angle position relative to the north and motion. iPhone has also light sensor and could also use sound input as a sensor. This is already an amazing range of sensors that will allows a lot of new applications... but to do face recognition, and locate objects in the real world, you need to wait a little longer ;-)
