To the list of things you worry about when you're writing a blog post or updating your status ("How will this affect my Technorati ranking?" "Will Wil Wheaton finally retweet me?" "Is this going to get me on a no-fly list?"), you can now add this: "What's my boss going to think?"

More and more employers want to know what you're doing, not just in your cubicle, behind the register or out in the field, but on the Net. They're trying to find out if your social media antics are going to reflect poorly on them. Should that be any of their business? After all, it's your Facebook account/blog/Twilight fan wiki; how is what you're doing any of their concern?

But consider the summer contractor fired from his job with the District of Columbia after he tweeted derogatory remarks about a local neighbourhood and talked about loafing on the job. Set aside the confession of misconduct, and you still have the issue of a worker publicly slagging the people he's supposed to be serving.

The slope gets a little more slippery once we start dealing with people who criticize their employer on their blogs... or just discuss their job without permission.

Waaaay down at the bottom of that slope is June's social-media-fail-of-the-month, the City of Bozeman, which required job applicants to provide the usernames and passwords for their social network profiles. (That policy has since been rescinded.)

Is the problem that we still haven't figured out what this space is yet? We sometimes treat it like it's a pub where we're venting with friends, saying outrageous things with complete impunity; some of the powers that be treat it as though every word we utter online ought to be lifted from the corporate annual report. Just where do employees and employers draw the line?

"Facebook profile which is only shared with your close friends = your living room. My employer has no right to ask me for the keys to my house."

Wrong. If you connect yourself in any way to your employer on your FaceBook page (even something as simple as using your employee email account), your employer's rules that govern your behavior still apply. For example, if your work for a non-profit, and you identify his business on your FaceBook page, you cannot endorse any political candidate because your employer could lose his tax-exempt status. You can and will be terminated.

Also, if you engage in behavior in your house that contradicts the values of your employer - doing drugs, having affairs, telling off-color jokes that offend co-workers you invite to your house and they complain to HR the next day - this also opens you up for dismissal.

I have this in very good authority from HR attorneys. Your home is no longer your castle.

Best advice? Either stay offline, or watch EVERYTHING you say and do. Remember, FaceBook's officially policy is that everything you post in "your account" really belongs to them.

I can attest to this ...

It didn't really get me "in trouble" per se, but I remember and incident from a few months back, at my old job in Hawaii ...

My boss was looking up some information on a road that was closed down due to flooding. He wanted to find out when they thought the repairs might be done. Well, when he searched for the road's name, guess who's blog post from earlier that year was sitting right at the top of the results.

Again, it's didn't get me in trouble, but they did make fun of me for about a week ... for that post, and a few others they "found" on my blog.

So yes, I can definitely see how posting anything online could be potentially "dangerous".

If everyone was cookie cutter perfect, we'd have no diversity or new ideas in the workplace. As long as your posts aren't pertaining to something illegal, super offensive or sexually explicit, and you're not running for office, it's probably ok. The best jobs are always the ones where your boss respects that you're a creative and decent human being, and not just a cog in the work machine.

Thanks for your comments, all. Two things that jump to mind:

@dana, that's a great point: it's so easy to focus on the odd horror story, when there are plenty of examples of people quietly doing positive things for their reputations online (in many cases, because they're quietly doing positive things for other people online).

@Tomas, HR law varies dramatically from jurisdiction to jurisdiction (and often from kind-of-workplace to kind-of-workplace). And lawyers often have differing opinions, depending not just on their personal perspectives but whose interests they're defending. I can tell you that in British Columbia, you'd be hard-pressed to fire someone just for having an affair.

hmm surely folks are aware of this by now, it's like global office gossip. It's bad form anyway to bad mouth your boss or colleagues so doing it in public is even worse. I think it just looks bad on them more so than the boss etc. It's all too one sided (i.e boss / company can't defend themselves against the accusations), we've all had bad days at the office, just tell a mate and move on.
