Oh how the mighty have fallen. The one time king of social networks, MySpace, now has the honor of being the site where the less affluent members of the online population stake their claims by way of bedazzled profiles overrun with auto-playing videos and songs. Meanwhile, the upscale, financially solvent users have moved on - and by moved on, we mean to Facebook, of course. At least those are the findings of the latest social networking study done by American consumer behavior analysis firm Nielsen Claritas.

By no means is this the first time that the demographics of today's social networks have been scrutinized and analyzed by researchers, nor is it the first time that they've come to this same conclusion. Earlier this summer, for example, Anderson Analytics looked into this same topic, studying trends among social networking users on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and LinkedIn. They found that Facebook users tend to be better off financially, while MySpace users' income was the lowest out of the four networks studied.

Those claims are now being further backed up by the Nielsen study, which, in addition to noting the financial discrepancies, also discovered that many social networking users tend to be urbanites, especially those engaged in blogging and tweeting.

The study examined seven of the most popular social networking and blogging sites including Facebook, MySpace, Blogger, Twitter, WordPress, ClassmatesOnline, and LinkedIn. Through the Claritas product, Nielsen segments their online panel of 200,000+ participants into demographically and behaviorally distinct groups which include everything from "Young Digerati" to "Heartlanders." After doing so, they found a notable difference between the two top social networking sites, Facebook and MySpace.

According to the research, the top third of lifestyle segments relative to affluence (aka the "richest" users) are 25% more likely to use Facebook than those in the lower third. The bottom third segments related to affluence (aka the "poorest") are 37% more likely to use MySpace. Also of note, Facebook users are more likely to use LinkedIn, a site for professional business networking, and again, another factor which points towards the differences in demographics between the two social networks.

Besides confirming the income discrepancies between MySpace and Facebook, Nielsen also discovered that those involved in blogging and tweeting tend to live in more urban areas such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago. The 12 "Urban" lifestyle groups tracked by the company are more likely to use Blogger, WordPress, and Twitter than the 22 "Town and Rural" segments. However, there was no mention of these groups being more affluent, just more urban.

"Also of note, Facebook users are more likely to use LinkedIn, a site for professional business networking, and again, another factor which points towards the differences in demographics between the two social networks."

What these studies fail to acknowledge is the blatantly obvious. If you look at the connection of data, you'll make the same conclusion. Facebook users more likely to use LinkedIn. Myspace is now left to the poorer demographic without higher demographic input. While Facebook is seeing increased usage by affluent users of means in the wake of Myspace drastically losing affluent users.

Let's take a look at the overall scenario... Myspace came first, and business aspects jumped on it for marketing purposes, and it was the social marketing agenda to have a Myspace page for business reasons, or linked to professional aspects. When Myspace became over saturated with marketing and advertising, as a service it lost its appeal and the next big thing was Facebook. En-mass, people flocked to Facebook, and since that became a targetable demographic, a majority of business aspects in the realm of social media marketing thusly stopped recommending Myspace as part of the social media marketing campaign and instead now push Facebook to reach a larger demographic favorable to big business.

In that Facebook users are more apt to also have a LinkedIn profile, simply shows a direct correlation between Professional users (marketing, industry, corporate) and Facebook use. Recent data also shows usage by ages 55+ demographic is up by over 500% as well for Facebook, while the younger population use dropped in the same period of time.

I'm willing to bet that the influx of 55+ age group are attributed to professional users en-mass trying to monetize the Facebook demographic. The same group would also be more likely to have LinkedIn profiles as well since they represent the higher age bracket and business/corporate involvement. This is also the same trend we would see from Myspace prior to their downfall.

What's the lesson from all of these numbers?

Business and corporate involvement suck the life out of these services and move on for the next target, following the demographics around (the same people trying to get away from the over saturation of marketing and advertising) like bloodthirsty vampires. When they kill off one service, they flock to the next.

MySpace was originally intended for musicians and others used it because there wasn't anything "as good." Then along came Facebook.

I don't think MySpace or the musicians care that non-musicians are leaving MySpace in favor of Facebook.

Of course MySpace has the less affluent - it's intended user base is aspiring musicians. No surprise there that we don't have a lot of money.

What saddens me is your positioning of it. MySpace didn't FALL. It welcomed the "homeless" into its home when there was no other home and once a more appropriate home was built for non-musicians (Facebook) they went where they felt like they belonged.

It's not competition. It's EXACTLY WHAT IS SUPPOSED to happen online - like minded people finding each other and congregating.

Honestly, I can't say this information is too shocking. I've been on Facebook since it was exclusively for specific colleges. Over the years I've seen the shift in my friends from Myspace to Facebook. It seems like the only people I know who still frequent Myspace are my 19 year old brother, my 19 year old cousins and all of their friends.

Myspace used to have advantages over Facebook but they have seriously upped their game. Where Facebook has continually evolved, Myspace has remained relatively the same.

I now check Myspace about once a month but honestly don't know why I still even have a profile.

I wonder if the streamlined look of Facebook and inability to really customize your profile has anything to do with the difference in users.

I disagree. All of my friends from all different incomes and backgrounds all use Facebook and pretty much all of them used MySpace or Bebo about a year back but don't use it anymore. Facebook used to have the "more intelligent" early 20s crowd but now Facebook appeals to all age groups from people at school, to people in higher education, to parents and even elderly people. The thing I have found recently is a lot of people will play the games at the moment, and more than ever people use their mobile phones on Facebook which is quite amazing considering mobile internet was only used by the small minority just a few years ago.

The only thing I go to MySpace for now is to check out new bands. Although even that has now been replaced by Last.fm and Spotify.

This just proves MySpace would be a better investment for brands --backed by Nielsen :)

Shame on you Sarah Perez. If you had written that MySpace, "the mighty" had fallen because their traffic numbers have dropped, your classist judgment might be more understandable.

Instead, without providing any evidence of such, you assume that affluent is better for business and poor is worse, hence MySpace being in a worse position. Which demographic is more open to advertising messages? What is the correlation between financial solvency and a willingness to make a purchase based on advertising? What do you think Coca-Cola or McDonald's cares about?

This is disappointing. RWW typically does much better than this.
