The iPhone hacker George Hotz, (aka geohot on Twitter) has done it again. Earlier this year, he made a name for himself in the hacking community as being the first to provide a usable iPhone 3GS jailbreak, which he then followed up by releasing a "better" unlock tool for the same device. Now he's again beaten the iPhone Dev Team to the punch with his release of blackra1n, a jailbreak tool for the Apple's latest iPhone firmware, 3.1.2.

]]> Unlocking vs Jailbreaking

Jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone are two different hacks which allow you to take control of your mobile device in different ways. Jailbreaking is a type of hack that lets you install unapproved third-party applications on your iPhone or iPod Touch from searchable repositories provided by apps like Cydia and Icy. Unlocking, on the other hand, is a hack that lets you use your iPhone on another cellular network. Here in the U.S., that means you can use the iPhone on T-Mobile instead of AT&T. You have to first jailbreak your phone before you can unlock it, but you don't have to unlock a phone in order to jailbreak it.

Unfortunately, what was once a relatively simple process has gotten more complex over time as new iPhone models were introduced and new hacking tools were being put out by multiple parties, often with confusing names like Pwnage Tool, Purplesn0w and redsn0w. With each release of iPhone firmware, it seems as if there's a whole new lexicon of terms to master and new procedures to follow. The 3.1.2 jailbreak is no exception. However, this jailbreak works on all versions of the iPhone and even on the latest iPod Touch.

How to Jailbreak the 3.1.2 Firmware (Windows Instructions)

Before beginning this jailbreak, keep in mind that this is for jailbreakers only - not unlockers. That means if you're currently using your phone on a non-standard carrier (for example, in the U.S. you're using T-Mobile instead of AT&T), then you do NOT want to use this tool because it will disable the unlock.

But if you're just interested in jailbreaking, read on:

Update to 3.1.2: If you haven't done so already, download the latest version of iTunes. Next, update your iPhone to the latest firmware when you're prompted to do so (click "Download and Install" on the pop-up message). Allow the new firmware to install as you would normally. This will un-jailbreak your phone for the time being.
Get the jailbreak tool: To get started with the newest jailbreak, Windows users should head to http://blackra1n.com. and click on the window icon at the bottom of the page to download the executable.
Run blackra1n: After the download is complete, connect your iPhone to your PC and run the executable. Click the "make it ra1n" button and the message will display "entering recovery..." (Note: Vista and Windows 7 users should run it in compatibility mode and as "Administrator." Right-click on the file, go to Properties, then click the "Compatibility" tab. Check the "run this program in compatibility mode for:" checkbox and choose Windows XP Service Pack 2 from the list provided. Click "OK" to close the window. Right-click to run as the Administrator.)
Device reboots: Continue letting the program run, the message now reads "running..." and after you see the image of geohot's face (the same as seen here), the device will reboot. A pop-up message will display prompting you to donate if you can. Click "OK" to close this message.
Launch blackra1n on the iPhone: On your iPhone, look for the blackra1n icon and tap it to launch the program.
Pick your favorite installer program: On the screen that appears, you have a choice between installer programs (repositories of jailbreak apps). Tap the one you prefer - Cydia, Rock or Icy - any will do. Blackra1n will install your chosen program on your phone and will relaunch the iPhone springboard when complete. Your phone is now jailbroken, and you can use Cydia, Rock or Icy to browse, search for and install jailbreak apps.

Tips: If the Upgrade is Stuck at "Running," Try the Following:

Set airplane mode on.
Move blackra1n to the C:\ drive and run it from there.
Kill any iTunes-related services prior to running.
While it's stuck on "running," do a hard reboot (push the home and power buttons simultaneously). The app will display a message that says it's done jailbreaking, but it's not. With the USB cable still plugged in, re-run the blackra1n app. This time it should work.

However, be aware that the blackra1n jailbreak is still a little iffy for some users. Several people have reported that they're unable to jailbreak, despite following instructions. If you're not feeling adventurous, you may want to wait for the Dev Team's jailbreak instead.

Mac Users Have to Wait

Sorry Mac users, there is no jailbreak yet available for 3.1.2 just yet. However, you can use the Pwnage Tool to jailbreak older 3.1 versions of the iPhone firmware. More details are here.

to anyone having problems with blackra1n stuck on running screen make sure you put your black ra1n program in start/computer/c/programfiles/commonfiles/apple/apple application support folder. run the black rain from there then turn ipod or iphone wifi off then you can make it rain(make sure you have itunes and all other apple software closed). anyone having problems downgrading from 3.1.2 to 3.1.2 make sure that you are downloading a 2nd gen 3.1.2 firmware even if you have 3rd gen ipod apple is not signing 3rd gen 3.1.2 anymore. if your downloaded firmware icon doesnt look like a white lego with music not and ipod logo on it you have the wrong one.(i couldnt get mine from recommended sites but just check the torrents you can definately find it) if you try third gen it will say not compatible or something...good luck

I have an iPhone 3G. I connected my phone to iTunes and it updated my iPhone to 3.1.3 without my consent! So I downgraded it to 3.1.2 using blackra1n. But the baseband cannot be downgraded, so I got 05.12.01.

My phone shows "No Service". This hasn't happened before the jailbreak (this SIM card is the one which goes for this phone and don't need to unlock). But I am unable to phone or text. Also my GPS doesn't work anymroe.

i'm from Oz and just followed the instructions and it worked first go no problems on my Iphone 3gs firmware 3.1.2 using windows 7 and with an ozzie network. i unlocked it and jailbroke it and it works great.

Im still using 3.0 on my Iphone and I really dont want to upgrade and lose all the Jail Break apps I have now that I rely on. Already jailbroke b4 painlessly but then restored b/c push didnt work and then youtube stopped. This was unrelated to blackrain. Now I am redoing everything and having all the same issues as everyone that posted. Except, I get the successful msg but not the GeoHot face, and then reboot hangs...help pls.

ok peoples once you plug your iphone into the computer and press 'make it rain' the picture should appear then if it loads and then says plug into itunes you unplug then replug and 'make it rain' again then go on and press the blackrain button on your iphone and install cydia then search on the internet anything you want to have. Open the blackra1n application on your computer and connect your phone. You will want to close any other applications that communicate with your phone such as iTunes, Rock Desktop, Diskaid etc.. Click the "make it rain" button to install. If you don't see the blackra1n logo on your phone within about 30 seconds then close the blackra1n application on your computer and read the detailed instructions below.

Only use the following instructions if you have difficulties with using blackra1n.

1. With your phone booted up normally connect it to your computer and open up blackra1n. (Close iTunes and/or Rock Desktop etc..)

2. Hold down the Home and Power Buttons on the phone until it enters recovery mode (the plug into iTunes logo). You have to hold the buttons for about 20 seconds.

3. Next click the make it rain button. If within about 30 seconds you don't see the blackra1n logo on your phone then close the blackra1n application on you computer.

4. On your phone even though it looks like it is still in restore mode hold down the two buttons again (You can leave it connected). You will see it flip to the Apple logo and then back to restore mode, let go of the buttons and try blackra1n again.

5. Wash, rinse and repeat. For most users it should work the first time but some 3G users have reported trying 5 - 10 times before it worked. (If iTunes reopens just keep closing it)

Note for all unibody Mac Books and all Macs running OS X v10.5.6: You will need to connect your iPhone via an external USB Hub (i.e. in your monitor, keyboard, any powered hub etc...) for the soft-unlock process to work. This Apple USB issue has been fixed in 10.5.7.

FINALLY...worked after trying for 2 days =)...im sharing this for anyone who faces a problem like mine...i have a 2g and just upgraded it to 3.1.2 and when i tried to jailbreak it only unlocked and the black rain icon was never installed on my iphone...who ever faces this problem you have to download blackrain again(if ur using microsoft vista or 7 right click on black rain open properties and compatibility, set compatibility with xp server pack 2 and click apply)jst go back to itunes restore ur iphone again, after it restores it will have to be unlocked and jailbroken just run black rain as administrater and "make it rain"... leave ur iphone it will reboot automatically...hope it helps

Jailbroke my phone and revirginized every time I screwed things up when tweaking. Have done this 3 times so far with no problems. Only I had to use Rock and update it for the system to detect that my phone was jailbroken.

HELP NEEDED!

I’m currently using the Iphone 3GS 3.1.2. I successfully jailbreak it with Black Ra1n and installed Installous from Cydia to download paid apps for free. My concern is why can’t I restart the iphone? Whenever I restart, I get the ‘usb to itunes’ picture in the phone. I’ll have to ‘Make It Ra1n’ again to resume. Any solution to this?

Besides that, can I download free apps from the AppStore after jailbreak? There are problems with the apps downloaded from Appstore. When I sync the iphone to itunes it shows an error stating that there’s problem syncing the following apps that I downloaded from the appstore to Itunes but I just click ok to the errors and I can sync other items. But when I eject the Iphone, the apps that I downloaded from appstore cannot be used. When i tap on it, the app load for about a second and back off.

I usually download all the apps from Iphone and not Itunes. Did I missed any steps when I jailbreak which caused all these problems to happen?

I had 4 iPhones to jailbreak for my family. 2 were 3G and 2 were 3GS.

the first one 3G was no problem - first try. using XP

the next one was a 3GS - my other computer was using Vista - this one was a realy problem. Followed all the instructions for Vista ran compatability mode etc. nothing worked. Kept getting stuck at recovery mode over and over.
Finally took this one to the other computer running XP and it worked no problem - first try.

Third iPHone was another 3G this one kept getting stuck also (even using XP) After about 1 hour of trying over and over again I finally realized that the firmware update didn't work properly - updated the firmware again and it worked like a charm.

4th Phone was another 3GS - did this on the computer running XP and had no problems. 1st try.

**NOTE** Someone previous posted to click "RESTORE" in iTunes if you're stuck.. DO NOT DO THIS - YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA AND REVERT I PHONE TO ORIGINAL SETTINGS.

If you are stuck in recovery,or running, or rebook - just do a hard reboot on your phone.

I ran into this same problem dozens of times while having problems and all I had to do was a hard reboot and start the process over again.

Not positive how everyone is getting this jailbreak to work, but I've given this a try about 10 times already. No options work, I've even tried everyone else suggestions and still a no go. After each direction, when I click (or click and hold for 10 seconds) the "make it ra1n" button. It starts and says "entering recovery mode" then iTunes will open (even if its disabled to open when iPhone is plugged in) and requires me to hit the restore button. This restores the phone back to factory. Anyone have any suggestions? I've followed every instruction down to the T, and still nothing.

Moving blackra1n to C: drive, setting it to Xp sp2 compatibility, running as admin, clicking and holding for 10 seconds, then plugging in the iPhone.... that's pretty much as far as I get, before iTunes comes up and tells me to restore.

Pardon my ignorance. I have a jailbroken phone v3.0 I believe. On Cydia it said that you should under no circumstances update firmware to 3.1.2 (because you will no longer be able to jailbreak) but if I want to upgrade my Jailbreak it seems the instructions are asking me to do so? Is this correct? Am I missing something? Are there separate instructions for upgrading from a prior jailbreak?

Hey there.

I followed the steps and it worked wonderfully. My OS is Windows 7.

To prevent any disappointment down the line, before I installed the blackra1n program, I used the compatibility mode (Windows XP Serv Pack 2) and then ran the program as an Admin.

Very easy to follow.

I installed this on my 2G 8gb iphone today and it seemed to work fine. Prior to installing: (1) I synced everything in itunes (2) rebooted iphone manually (3) placed blackra1n software in c:\ drive.

I noticed my itunes said I cannot use with itunes until I restore though - I needed to jailbreak due to my ring/vibrate button being broken and I need an app to bypass.

Here's hoping the app will resolve that problem & this will buy me more time with my antique iphone.

Ok so I downloaded this and tethering does work for me after I did this....problems is I lose service now where I didnt before. Okay, My Jailbreak works great, great APPs running on it, but I did the jailbreak with set music, contacts, playlists, photos, etc already synced with my phone. When i plug into iTunes and try to sync these things, it does not work anymore and looks as if I may have to reset all of my Apps, music, etc from the beginning. Now it is stuck rebooting at the apple logo. I tried using the new Pwnage tool on a friend's Mac, but it gets stuck at going into DFU mode, it keeps saying failed at DFU mode. I've even tried restoring using the custom IPSW that I had made in Pwnage tool in Itunes but would give a cannot restore error. I tried restoring with just standard Itunes restore and that didn't work.

Any ideas? I don't care about a jailbreak at this point, just want my iphone working again.

What happens if I unlocked my phone once before. 2g silver back. I plugged it into my new computer and now it just shows the itune and the connect symbol. Do I have to Jail break my phone all over and then unlock it again. I am not a computer person and I am having problems getting my phone to work again. It worked for all most a year with no problems. Updated to 3.1.2, ran blackra1n, Tethering appeared in Settings. Turned it on and it worked... for a day. Did as noted on geohot site and installed mobileconfig file, however that didn't fix it... Internet Tethering is showing at top of screen but webpages not loading ... Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks!

See #48 ct63366. I did it in less than 10 min.
#1 Do all the update stuff
#2 drag blackra1n to c: drive
#3 then unplug your iphone
#4 reboot computer and iphone
#5 run blackra1n
#6 click "make it rain" (i held it for 10 sec then released)
#7 then plug your iphone back
#8 wait 25-30 seconds
#9 message telling you iphone would be jailbroken once it had reboot
#10 the image on blackra1n.com with the guy and iphones will show up on your iphone.
#11 then it reboots.....no muss no fuss
#12 i kept itunes closed

finally got this to work follow the tips section if stuck on running.. make sure all itunes apps are closed had particular problem because one was named touch driver... once i closed that and moved blackra1n to c drive worked perfectly.thank you

I've been trying this since Monday the 12th and couldn't get it to jailbreak. And I found these instructions from "PuG" on another site AND IT WORKED.. FINALLY ! ! !

Been messing about with my 3G 8gb for about half an hour trying to jailbreak it lol.. followed everyones suggestions and nothing worked... THEN i cracked it...
Do all the update stuff first then unplug your iphone and reboot it. compatibility mode your blackra1n, RUN blackra1n and click "make it rain"... THEN and only then plug your iphone back into the computer... was over and done in 30 seconds, popped up wit the message telling me my iphone would be jailbroken once it had reboot and the image of the curly haired lad with the wave of iphones popped onto the screen... it rebooted and now its done.

Worked first time for me, first jailbreak (was a little nervous too, didn't want to brick it!) and it was as easy as clicking 1 button... can't ask for more than that!

inused to get stuck on done, wait for reboot. Today i moved blackra1n to the C drive then i got stuck on running well notthing happened so i decide to reboot my pc and move the file back to my desktop and opened. Hello I have an iPhone 3gs I got it from the store with 3.1 so I updated it to 3.1.2 to jailbreak it. I earlier tried jailbreaking my 3GS but it never worked at all. But the Blackrain was the simplest Jail Break I ever had.... Infact everything went on its own and I never even had to download the custom restore file.

I have tried everything from closeing iTunes and all its services to running it and running it again when its stuck in the reboot part of the install......NOTHING has worked, i have tried it over 20x in every way imaginable...still gets frozen at the end when its supposed to reboot, never see a picture only the cable connect to iTunes logo then a black screen...Can someone please tell me what the &#&$ I am doing wrong or a way around this i am about to throw this thing out the window lol

Sat on running for a while. I went back and did a hard reboot ( hold down home and power ) for a few seconds. opened up blackra1n again and there you have it... DONE.
