Whatever Happened To... Newsvine

Two years ago social news site Newsvine was acquired by MSNBC, the Microsoft/NBC joint venture. The site had launched publicly in March 2006 and was considered to be one of the best designed new breed of 'web 2.0' news sites. Features include user-generated content, reputation, voting, comments, friends lists, tags, and more.

At the time of the sale, Newsvine was promising to integrate some of those web 2.0 features into the main MSNBC properties. CEO Mike Davidson told ReadWriteWeb in 2007 that "over the next few years, Newsvine technology and content will make its way onto msnbc.com, and vice-versa where it makes sense." Has that actually occured? Let's check in with Newsvine to find out.

Newsvine is a "Citizen Journalism" site; a news publication built using the voices and recommendations of ordinary citizens. It also syndicates content from its parent company MSNBC, Associated Press and others. Newsvine has a lot in common with social news sites like Digg and Slashdot - only it has more mainstream topics.

Slow Development, But Keeping Abreast of Trends

What's new at Newsvine circa 2009? There is nothing overly different from what we saw in 2007, but the site continues to look elegant and is still packed with social features.

Newsvine appears to have kept up with current trends - we noted today a Real-Time Web feature, called Newsvine LIVE. This is a rapidly scrolling view of emerging stories, displayed as a pane on the right-hand side of the homepage.

However as with many startups that get acquired by big companies, the pace of development at Newsvine slowed considerably after being bought. A scan of the Newsvine blog this year doesn't show much development. There was some administrative work done on groups and a hook-up with Facebook. Not much else is noted in the blog, although Newsvine has been active in developing widgets for sites like Netvibes and Yahoo.

Mike Davidson blogged in August that "things, for the most part, are going swimmingly [at Newsvine]." He admitted though that "building technologies and services for msnbc.com has slowed our development efforts on newsvine.com a bit, for the time being."

Traffic: Steady

When we last spoke to Newsvine, in July 2007 just prior to its acquisition, Newsvine was getting about 1.2 million unique visitors per month. It was said to be growing at an average rate of 46% per quarter. The top topics in Newsvine in mid-07 were Politics and Technology, echoing the popular topics in the blogosphere of that time.

Traffic over the past year at Newsvine has been fairly flat, at least according to Compete - which puts the US unique visitors at around 1.2 million and shows little growth.

However in an August 2009 post, Newsvine CEO Mike Davidson claimed that Newsvine now gets "over 4 million uniques a month." So perhaps Compete's statistics are too low (which wouldn't be the first time).

Conclusion

All seems fine and dandy at Newsvine, despite slow development of new features on the site.

However, as yet there is little evidence of Newsvine functionality on MSNBC sites - certainly the readers don't contribute much content to them. Hopefully we see more of that over the coming year, as Mike Davidson did say integration would occur "over the next few years" back in 2007.

Overall, it's good to see that Newsvine's community is still relatively vibrant. As of time of writing, a story entitled 'Dick Cheney was a Lying, Treasonous Coward' has 239 comments. Evidence that it is an MSNBC site after all!

All the big companies are acquiring all the small one, i fink last week i read that google has bought another small companies.. there r drawbacks to it, as the rich get richer and the poor is getting poorer, there should be a limit to it.

I am at this point still a member of Newsvine,since 2008,with a column. I have removed all my content from the column,but continue to keep it active. I did this because of the Socialist,communist, subversive members who troll any and all content that members write on the Vine, so I could continue to monitor. . They are abusive, and I have been personally threatened by a member,who threatened to "eat me" like in Hannibal Lector" and I reported it to the Vine, Police, Fcc...nothing happened as he is in the "Inner circle" of the Vine Upper management.I am a Patriot of this United States Of America. I am offended that such a supposed "American" Journalists group can be tolerated with their hate mongering....and communist spueing of trash...I am appalled at Newvine and the damage it does to young minds.I am not ashamed to tell you I am "kjpxxx" on Newsvine. Look me up and may all of you Communist Liberal Trolls.....stick this in your collective ears....kjpxxx

Lately Newsvine seems to be wilting. It took a pratfall when it recently squelched or purged commenters whose opinions conflicted with the MSNBC favorites.

Don't waste your time with Newsvine if you crave quality dialogue. It is predominantly a mutual admiration society these days. Very fluffy content.

Also to add is that Newsvine has been beta testing user columns and is working on a beta version of the groups. (I'm helping beta test them). The new beta columns and groups allow a lot more creativity, flexibility, and options then the ones we have now. Very happy with the new upgrades we are seeing and Newsvine will continue to be my favorite news / discussion site online.

Nice post! I was actually thinking about Newsvine last week. I started using it about a year and a half ago and the Apple tech section was quite popular. I looked at it a month ago, and most of the 'current' stories were weeks and months out of date. That's a shame, because I really liked the whole experience of contributing and debating with other fans.

Thanks Richard. There aren't enough of these follow-up posts after acquisitions unless things end up in spectacular failure (e.g. Skype). Here is some additional information which addresses some of the things in your post:

1. A good part of integration with msnbc.com involves providing technology and services which are branded msnbc.com and not really part of the Newsvine site itself. A few examples include:

c) Blogs on the Newsvine platform, including The Elkhart Project, which won the National Press club award for Online Journalism: http://elkhartprojectblog.msnbc.msn.com/

d) Several other features sewn through the msnbc.com brand family of sites, including single-sign on registration and tweet syndication.

We feel pretty good about the amount of social activity that now occurs on-site at msnbc.com as a result of a lot of the things we've now launched together.

2. Traffic-wise, we're at about 3-4 million uniques a month (depending on the month), compared to just under a million around acquisition time. Time spent on msnbc.com is way up in the last two years as well and we'd selfishly like to think we're maybe a teensy part of that, although everyone else at msnbc.com is an even bigger part.

3. I definitely agree with you that Newsvine looks a little too similar to what it looked like two years ago, even though (thank you!) that look has stood the test of time decently. With all of the work surrounding the 2008 election and then cascading new initiatives after that, the team's labor pendulum swung towards msnbc.com a bit, but we're busy rebalancing those efforts right now. Expect very interesting changes to Newsvine.com in the coming year, in a very good way, we think. :)

4. There are also some really great things coming up on msnbc.com within the next couple of months that I can't talk about, but involve smart integration of Newsvine technology.

Anyway, that's my two cents to add to yours! Keep up the great work around here, as always...
