During his weekly address this morning, President Obama named Aneesh Chopra as the nation's first Chief Technology Officer. Chopra, who has effectively been doing much the same job at a state level in his role as Secretary of Technology for Governor Kaine of Virginia, will work closely with Vivek Kundra, the recently named Federal CIO, and Jeffrey Zients, the man Obama today named the first ever Chief Performance Officer.
Last month, two Virginia congressmen recommended Chopra for the job, saying "Chopra's public and private experience in the technology field made him the right candidate," and pointed out his focus on healthcare IT "is ideal for a position that will have responsibilities dealing both with stimulus spending on healthcare and environmental programs."
"I have named Jeffrey Zients, a leading CEO, management consultant and entrepreneur, to serve as Deputy Director for Management of the Office of Management and Budget and as the first ever Chief Performance Officer. Jeffrey will work to streamline processes, cut costs, and find best practices throughout our government.Aneesh Chopra, who is currently the Secretary of Technology for Governor Kaine of Virginia, has agreed to serve as America's Chief Technology Officer. In this role, Aneesh will promote technological innovation to help achieve our most urgent priorities - from creating jobs and reducing health care costs to keeping our nation secure.
Aneesh and Jeffrey will work closely with our Chief Information Officer, Vivek Kundra, who is responsible for setting technology policy across the government, and using technology to improve security, ensure transparency, and lower costs. The goal is to give all Americans a voice in their government and ensure that they know exactly how we're spending their money - and can hold us accountable for the results."
Tim O'Reilly, the man who coined the term Web 2.0, claims that Chopra has been instrumental in helping him better understand Government 2.0 and how technology can be utilized to build a better government. He offers eight reasons why Chopra is an excellent choice as Federal CTO.
We've embedded a video of the keynote Aneesh Chopra gave at this year's State of the Net Conference earlier this year to give you an insight into the thoughts of our new CTO. In this 50 minute talk, Chopra discusses health IT, broadband policy and open education among other things.

This quiet story is actually quite important. Thanks for covering this. The o'reilly endorsement satiated my need for geek cred.
"will work closely with Vivek Kundra, the recently named Federal CIO". Two questions on that point. Did not Vivek Kundra take a leave of absense when two people he supervised as chief information officer of DC got arrested by the FBI?
http://www.forbes.com/2009/03/31/vivek-kundra-obama-technology-cio-network-kundra.html
Secondly, how is the position of "federal CIO" different from "Secretary of Technology" (CTO). Kundra's portfolio is just information technology whereas Chopra's is all technology including information?
thankssss
Judging from the video embedded here - Obama choose well.
What the bleep is "Government 2.0"? It by definition is wrong. Govt 1.0 is sanctioned lawful govt as prescribed in the Constitution. Govt 1.1 is sanctioned lawful government as prescribed by the Constitution and all it's amendments.
Any other kind of govt w/o a Constitutional amendment or convention is by definition illegal.
Of course, as an American, I understand this. The new school neo american underproductive, govt loving, progressive, bow to the saudis, muck it up with the chavez's crowd don't understand. They seem to think they have some standing in the eyes of the Lord. Screw that. We are so freaking close to a civil war it is full on scary.
But then again, as an American, I understand that. Oops, did I use that word American again. Sorry, you would not know that word. You weren't taught it in school. You might have heard of my new name, Right Wing Extremist.
Govt 2.0 my ass. We need change alright. Chop, slash, cut, nuke, obliterate change.
CTO for the USA my ass. Where's that in the Functional Specification for the FEDGOV?
God Damn Obama. God Damn him to hell.
Some how I knew it has to be an Indian guy. Not that I am being racist, but just sorta expected it.
I think we know very well now that Obama's admnistration would rely more on technology than any of the past ones, which in my mind, would also make things more vulnerable.
This is a slap to unemployed Engineers and Programmers that have been replaced by cheap foreign labor under the guest worker visas like H1b and L1 (and they are mostly Indian) and also those that lost their jobs that got outsourced to India.
Obama does not care about the unemployed Americans. Hopefully our next President after him will eventually hire Americans and help Americans first.
Obama has done well.

JAMES:
Your life is VERY comfortable, isn't it ?
What are your comments on Mind-reading system ?
How about STEALING ideas/thoughts of innocent individuals while they suffer ?
As for Obama, ANYTHING short of Mind-reading system reform is UN-ACCEPTABLE.
So..... if Indians can get an education in a third-world country, fly how many ever thousands of miles over to the US of A, and get a job(mind you they are hired by "Americans" not some Martian), and the "Americans" who grew up here and got an education in a "Developed" country, can't find a job..... how is it the Indians fault.
I am an Indian-American, and recently I was told to go back to my country, get this.... by an "African-American". I politely pointed out to him, that since he calls himself an "African-American" perhaps he should go back to Africa, he broke into a tirade in Ebonics (most of which I couldn't understand), so I asked him to go to school to learn "proper" english so he can stop whining and get a job. Folks need to remember what America is all about. Remember, "All men are created equal....."?
Before yu know it, we will all be forced to praise Allah! LOL

PS- Indians are lame since the death of Nehru- he had balls like boulders.
What?? Nehru?!!! I had bigger balls than Nehru!! Anyway... if we all believed in an eye for an eye, we'd all be blind. So peace muthafuckas!
I lost my initial job to an Indian on Guest Worker Visa and then started on another job. That job too got outsourced to India.
Indians have been telling us that Americans are lazy and dumb programmers.
Wish Obama is sensitive to our flight. In the case of diversity, he should have picked the other CIO to be of non-indian descent.
Does Obama also think non-desi Americans are inferior when it comes to IT?
Now they will send all our jobs to India with the help of Vivek, the honest CTO.
My white brothers, please stop drinkin that haterade.. go ahead, call me a desi-lover. frankly I am one cuz my gf is a smokin hot Indian, but thats besides the point.. here are my thoughts:
1. first and foremost, read a bit about Aneesh here: http://radar.oreilly.com/2009/04/aneesh-chopra-great-federal-cto.html
2. the man clearly is a visionary and has a proven record of putting his thoughts into actionable solutions.
3. in the end, this Indian will help create more jobs for the Americans.
4. having a diverse team brings in different views and in general, a more successfull team. I am glad we finally have a black president, a white vp, a desi CTO, a chinese sec of energy, and so on.. take a look at the entire Obama cabinet - everyone has an exceptional track record. all are hard working, went to some of the best schools, and all are working towards the same goal.. if you honestly think they are here to screw you over then you must be living in the 2000-2008 era
5. stop being ignorant and hating on an entire race just because some hard working people found a way to get a piece of the pie.. this is America, and this country was built on the Anmerican dream.. either you or your parents or grand parents or great grand paretns came over for the same reason.. and for the betterment of their kids and future generations to follow. The same American dream still stands in 2009 as it did centuries ago.. and I doubt if it will ever stop.. so stop your bitchin and find a way to be more competitive.
Congratulations to Aneesh Chopra. He is the right candidate for this role today. I won't repeat my blog post on why, but feel free to check it out if you are interested:

What is his position on independent ISPs and their position in the ISP food chain? Do we continue to penalized for not being wealthy or will we be able to compete on equal grounds as we were able to before George II became president?

Hey you hateful Republican Talibans, stop your racist comments! Guess what now America has Republican Talibans and their chief is an angry old man, Dick Cheney, a very sour loser who is maliciously converting the old obsolete republicans to a vigorous Talibans of America. Compare the principles of the muslim talibans with the Republican Talibans, there is indeed a lot in common.
America is not a pure white country it is the melting pot and for decades millions have landed on its shore to contribute and build America. So stop the complaining and just learn to accept or move to Crawford Texas,

Yes, we might even fund endeavors to openly "interfere with interstate commerce" under the guise of "economic development."
