Earlier this week Bloglines launched a beta re-design, ending about two years of design stagnation for the once dominant browser-based RSS Reader. During my conversation with new Bloglines GM Eric Engleman, we touched on the impact of Google Reader on this market. Has Google Reader in fact usurped Bloglines as the number 1 browser-based RSS Reader (which would also probably make them the leading RSS Reader overall)? That seems to be the opinion of a lot of tech people - and certainly Google Reader is a favorite of many early adopter types.
But based on current Hitwise data that Read/WriteWeb has gotten hold of, in fact Bloglines is still the market leader.
Most bloggers Feedburner data shows that "Google Feedfetcher" is ahead of Bloglines. However that isn't a fair comparison, because Feedburner defines "Google Feedfetcher" as being both Google Reader and iGoogle (Google's start page product). So here is data from Hitwise, supplied to us by Bloglines, which compares Bloglines with Google Reader alone:

The above chart shows that Bloglines still leads, although Google Reader has made big gains since October 2006.
Bloglines was mostly on the way up from mid-2006 until about January 2007, when they began to drop. It's only been August 2007 that Bloglines' trend line has jumped up again. Meanwhile Google Reader has steadily been climbing since October 2006 - and it is not far behind Bloglines now, according to Hitwise data.
The above chart is similar to the one Hitwise posted in January 2007 on their blog (but see note at the bottom of this post):

At that point, January 2007, Google Reader had begun to make inroads - but Bloglines was still significantly ahead. Now, at the end of August 2007, Bloglines is just a little ahead of Google Reader. Looks like Bloglines got their Beta re-design out in the nick of time!
Bloglines GM Eric Engleman told Read/WriteWeb that "it's a two-horse race [and] the race is on!" - meaning Bloglines and Google Reader. He expects the next 3 months to be a very interesting time to watch Bloglines and Google Reader. He says that Bloglines has a good plan "to get our product back out there to our fans and expand the feed reader marketplace past its current tech set."
I suspect that other major players like Newsgator and Netvibes might quibble with the two-horse race scenario, but it is clear from the Hitwise data that Bloglines and Google Reader are the two main players right now. It will indeed be interesting to see whether Bloglines' re-design and renewed focus will be able to stop the momentum that Google Reader has built up over the past year. Too little, too late? Bloglines will beg to differ, but it goes to show that a Web market leader can't afford to drop the ball and stop innovating. It's game on again!
Note: the traffic on our Aug 07 chart is based on visits to the Lifestyle - Blogs and Personal Websites category in Hitwise. The Jan 07 chart was based on All Categories.

Long live bloglines! I really don't enjoy using the beta though. I guess I am old and curmudgeonly.
add me to the list.
current UI of bloglines is easy and simple .
New UI has bells and whistles but very usable
sorry typo -meant to say new UI for Bloglines is not very usable!
I guess I am too much a fan of Google. I never heard of bloglines and am very happy using Google Reader.
I have used a number of newsfeed aggs but I have found the UI on newsgator to my taste as it is web-based with a few bells and whistles. However, I have noticed recently that google offer the last 2,000 feeds offline as new feature. I presume this is an example of google using google gears. This is a really attractive feature for me as i like to read my feeds (like a print newspaper) on the bus (which to date have not been fitted with wi-fi in my neck of the woods). It does mean using another google service, however!
Bloglines should maintain their current web 1.0 system and start a new site for the web 2.0 generation.
I still cannot see Bloglines taking on the Google Empire.

The chink in the Google Reader armour is that it doesn't accept authenticated feeds. I can only assume that this feature is coming soon.
I'm with Zack. I got here through Scoble's feed that he publishes. But there were 5 separate links. All pointing to the same page!
I'm still using old Bloglines. Beta Bloglines still doesn't have all the features that old Bloglines has yet (Beta! Duh!).
Just like Google Reader (which I tried when Bloglines quite updating some time ago), the beta doesn't offer any easy visual clue that you've gone from one feed to another. That nice blue bar in old Bloglines is a nice visual reminder that you're at the next feed. With both Google and Beta Bloglines you have to keep your eye out for a line that isn't differentiated at all from posts.
I'll try it again later and see if any improvements have been made.
I'm with V. I really hope that Bloglines keeps the old system up and running.
Even though Blogline still leads, this situation will not last for much longer. Google Reader will overpower Bloglines with the integration to the Google service portfolio (ala. iGoogle already), and especially when Google accelerates their mobile plans. Bloglines just won't have the steam to win this fight.
From what I see, I think Netvibes is growing faster than either Google Reader or Bloglines and if Bloglines think its a two horse race they are in for a surprise.
Here, we are comparing the three most popular web-based RSS readers - Newsgator Online Web Edition, Bloglines

I don't know why, but I use these two readers. I use bloglines on a daily basis, while google reader once in a month. I think that is good enough for me to catch up with my areas of interests. This is the case, inspite of the feeling that Google Reader s faster and better.
Maybe there are more people like that...
