Cartoon: Not With a Bang, But a Twitter

Written by Rob Cottingham / August 9, 2009 12:30 PM / 7 Comments

Twitter went down last week. So did Facebook, LiveJournal, and Blogger.

They were all victims of a denial of service attack that was, depending on who you believe, either the work of Russian nationalist hackers targeting a Georgian economist, a clever ploy by the United Economists of Georgia to garner sympathy by feigning an attack by Russian nationalist hackers, or an attempt by Paramount Pictures to divert attention from reviews of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

But Twitter was what struggled most in the face of the attack. The result was hundreds of thousands of frustrated users, plaintive API calls gone unheeded, and pods full of exhausted fail whales working double, even triple, shifts.

Yet we all made it (including countless girl's-name-plus-random-four-digits Twitter spam accounts... oh, how I missed you lot these past few days). I'll let you know where to get your "I Survived the Twitter DoS Attack of 2009" t-shirts shortly.

  1. Is your creative process so stale that you have nothing to write about then a temporary DDoS (literally a couple of hours) at some popular sites? Seriously, how many articles can you churn out about this non-story? It's not just you, all tech "journalists" are writing about this. Pathetic.

  2. I think the T-shirt idea is great!

  3. This highlights how fragile the infrastructure of Twitter. Twitter itself needs to fix. Remeber facebook withstands these attacks.

  4. The Twitter outage lasted almost 2 days in Indonesia, during which Playwright WS Rendra died and a person "suspected to be Kuningan bomber Noordin M Top" was surrounded and killed. Two possible trending topics opportunities, after #indonesiaunite and "Mbah Surip"

Btw have you read the Cody Brown piece analyzing the direction Twitter is taking?

  5. Wow!

Great article! I think that is a reason plus why we should protect ourselves against malware even better! I recommend for this BitDefender it has an excellent detection rate of known and unknown viruses and also great features to defend your virtual world!

  7. I think for a startup that has had it's problem Twitter actually did pretty well in trying to stay up. The only problem was the API took a hit that I think hurt a lot of sites but it's part of the rebound.
