Domain Pigeon: Your Unintelligible Five Letter Domain Name Awaits

Written by Rick Turoczy / February 6, 2009 12:30 AM / 53 Comments

domainpigeon.jpgYou've done the market research. You've built the killer app. Now, all you need is a decent domain name. Preferably a .com. Why? Because the iPhone doesn't have a .net button, for one thing. But finding something short and memorable can be difficult at best. Enter Domain Pigeon, a domain search service that eschews one-at-a-time searches by allowing you to thumb through a laundry list of available domains - including the five-letter .com domains that are still available.

We've used a number of domain name searches, and Domain Pigeon's approach is among the best we've seen. It's simple and straightforward. Best of all, you get to see extensive lists of available domains all at once. But there's one catch: you can't buy a domain there.

Ironically, it's the fact that you can't buy domain names that makes Domain Pigeon so nice to use. Traditional domain services actually restrict your ability to research names by showing you a few domains at a time based on your searches. Why? For a very simple reason: once you search and find a domain, you're more likely to buy one for fear of losing it.

But because Domain Pigeon is passing you through to another service - and picking up an affiliate kickback - there's no harm in showing you everything at once. You get the freedom to look at a wide variety of domains and, should you decide to buy, Domain Pigeon still sees revenue. Win, win.

domainpigeonscreen.jpg

But don't think all of the pressure is off. Domain Pigeon still does a nice job of motivating you to purchase by showing you how many other people are currently interested in that domain name. For example, 16 people are currently interested in purchasing illpe.com, so if you were building illpe, you might want to hurry.

The next time you're still looking for that perfect domain name, try Domain Pigeon. At the very least, it will spark some ideas. At best, you may walk away with the perfect - albeit unintelligible - .com name for your new venture.

We're looking forward to reviewing reakd, tchdo, ofgar, ainxx, and rpayi in the not too distant future.

  8. So I guess it is completely irrelevant that all of those 5 letter domains are utterly putrid? I wouldn't even host your blog there. I'm guessing the new stream of startups has totally dried up if this is getting covered.

  11. A short domain is great but most of the five character domains listed are not of any value. They are very difficult to remember. You are better off with five numbers which is a hot commodity in Asia. Numbers cross most language barriers and are easy to type in mobile search. Ideal Domain Name has a few available.

I was the registrant of www.VitaminShop.com I was the original registrant for www.CarTires.com I was the original registrant of VitaminWeb.com www.InvestorBooks.com PlugInSun.com some simpletons think a 5 letter word is worth more then a real generic or brand able name. Example of a stupid domain name.....readwriteweb.com

  15. Great post. Here is some caution we all need to look out for!!

The beautiful thing about a good domain name is that every domain name is unique and can be a sustainable competitive advantage even for the “little guy”.
But beware, I do put a word of caution out into the community that there are a lot of registrars that when you type in the name to see if it is taken, they immediately register it for themselves (if you don’t). This is a disgusting practice and from what I understand http://www.rnrstuff.net does NOT do this. That is why I use them to do the first uploads. Cheaper than almost all the big time sites but honest thus this far.

The domain business is still “finding its way” so be careful out there.

  16. Domaineering is the web-based marketing business of acquiring and monetizing Internet domain names focusing on their use specifically as an advertising medium rather than primarily speculating on domains as intellectual property investments for resale as in domaining where generating advertising revenue is considered more of a bonus while awaiting a sale. In essence, the domain names function as virtual Internet billboards with generic domain names being highly valued for their revenue generating potential derived from attracting Internet traffic hits. Revenue is earned as potential customers view pay per click ( PPC ) ads or the Internet traffic attracted may be redirected to another website. Hence, the domain name itself is the revenue generating asset conveying information beyond just functioning as a typical web address. As the value here is intrinsically in the domain name and not in a website's products or services, these domains are developed for advertising, ( i.e, "parked" ), and not into "conventional" websites. As with traditional advertising, domaineering is part art and part science. Often to be the most effective as an advertising tool, the domain names and their corresponding landing pages must be engineered or optimized to produce maximum revenue which may require considerable skill and keen knowledge of search engine optimization ( SEO ) practices, marketing psychology and an understanding of the target market audience. Domaineering generally utilizes a firm offering domain parking services to provide the sponsored "feed" of a word or phrase searched for thus creating a mini-directory populated largely by advertisers paying to promote their products and services under a relevant generic keyword domain. Occasionally content is added to develop a functional mini-website. Domaineers contend that their product, i.e., "domain advertising", is a bona fide offering of goods or services in and of itself which provides rights to and legitimate interests in the generic domains they use. This serves as a rebuttal or defense in addressing occasional accusations of cybersquatting. Domaineers and some of those who advertise online using keywords believe domaineering provides a useful, legal and legitimate Internet marketing service while opponents of domaineering decry the practice as increasing the ubiquitous commercialization of the world wide web. Domaineering aka "domain advertising" is practiced by both large organizations which may have registered hundreds or even thousands of domains to individual entrepreneurial minded domaineers who may only own one or a few. The earliest known verifiable identification and defining of domaineering as a distinct Internet advertising practice is attributed to Canadian Professor William Lorenz.
