First Android Phone Approved By FCC

Written by Sarah Perez / August 18, 2008 7:14 AM / 32 Comments

Today, the news broke that the HTC Dream, the first handset to run Android (aka "the Google Phone") has been approved by the FCC. In the documents provided, it appears that we have now a release date for this highly anticipated phone: November 10th, 2008.

So what will the HTC Dream offer? We take a look at some of the details and unknowns surrounding this device.

This morning Engadget Mobile broke the news of the HTC Dream's FCC approval, and confirms that it is indeed the long-awaited Android phone. T-Mobile, HTC, and Google should be announcing the Dream's launch in either September or October, depending on who you believe. Originally, the launch was thought to be in October, but today, VentureBeat is reporting that, in the FCC document, HTC requests the commission grant it a short-term confidentiality request on "attachments" until Nov. 10th, 2008. That date seems to confirm that the phone will be released on November 10th.

What's Inside

A recent post in the unofficial T-Mobile blog, TmoNews, confirms that the HTC Dream will offer the following features:

  • Touch screen
  • Full Qwerty keyboard
  • 3G/ WiFi
  • Full HTML internet capabilities
  • Easy access to all Google applications (Gmail, Gtalk, search)
  • Maps
  • Street view
  • YouTube
  • Phone
  • IM/Text
  • Email
  • Camera 3.0mp; no flash
  • Video (playback only, no recording)
  • Music player & 1GB memory card pre-loaded
  • Applications, all available in Google marketplace (icon on the homescreen)

Engadget adds that the Dream will also offer Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR compliance and has a "jogball" as seen this video:

Unconfirmed at this time is GPS, but it seems likely that the handset will have this considering that T-Mobile can provide the service and the phone will offer Street View, which would require its use (although it could work through triangulation, we suppose). TmoNews also adds that the phone will offer two data plan options: Unlimited data and 400 messages or Unlimited data and unlimited messages. Prices for these plans will be in the $35 range, they say.

Still no word on whether or not this video is legit, though:

  2. There is no reference to what operating system is to be used onthe phone in the FCC document. There is no published statement by T-Mobile that the Dream will use Android. Rumor, speculation, and fan boy enthusiasm ( myself included ) are one thing...

...the reality of a multi-national corporation selling a pre-alpha build of an operating system to the public is quite another.

  3. I hope that isn't the final design of the phone. The first ever Android phone should not be that ugly. They need to come out and wow people to compete with iPhone and an ugly phone won't do that.

  4. I'm sure there will be bugs - but I'm looking forward to an "open" phone...finally.

  5. I like HTC products for the most part. They have decent UI's like on the HTC Touch... they need to part ways with the stylus though.

Anyways, I'm curious to see what their new handset looks like and how well it is going to complement the much raved about Android.

  11. Without at least a 5mp camera with video recording and a SDHC slot this phone will be a flop in Europe.

Hope they 'll fix it before European launch......

  12. No flash and no video recording? Seems that Apple didn't just raise the bar, they lowered it too.

  19. The fact that the confidentiality runs out on November 10th is NEVER linked to the date they release the phone...that is absurd. Why would they give away the release date like that? I have been following T-mobile releases for years and this has never been the case. For example, the confidentiality on the TM506 runs out on November 1st, however the phone is launching on September 3rd, and that is 100% confirmed. They ask for confidentiality for quite a bit long as to NOT give away the release date. The HTC Dream will go on presale on September, and customers will recieve them on October 13th, the official national launch day of the phone. That is coming from TmoNews.com

  20. Apple makes it impossible to use the iphone as a modem for an external device. Same for this thing? What I really want is to be able to have 3G connectivity anywhere, and be able to use the connection the way I want, not the way Apple says I can.

  21. That looks like a sick phone? How much will these go for??

  22. This isn't going to touch the iPhone. Nice try but Tmobile is terrible. Ask all of their customers who make the switch!

  23. I for one am quite excited for this next wave of phones. It seems that RIM and Apple really set down the foundation to raise the bar for the entire industry. I do website design and development and I hear more and more everyday "make my site mobile friendly". Seems technology might do that on it's own!
