Get Automatic Updates for Google Chrome's Nightly Builds

Written by Corvida / September 7, 2008 4:50 PM / 15 Comments

We've been tipped off that Google has been releasing nightly builds of their new Google Chrome browser like crazy. It's been reported that up to 10 nightly builds a day are being released for Chrome. That's a lot of updates to keep up with and we have to admit we're surprised at the pace in which Google is releasing these builds. However, the builds do not come with automatic updates or notifications for new build releases. A developer has taken the time to throw together a simple and efficient solution.

Google Chrome Nightly Builds Checker

Dirhael, a DonationCoder user, has taken the initiative to release a portable checker for Chrome nightly builds. The application is more of an auto-hotkey utility that will not only let you know about the latest build, but also make sure the latest build isn't broken. In doing so, you won't waste time downloading builds that don't work.

Saving Time and Bandwidth

The application will check for the latest nightly build and provide you with a link to download the build. You can choose between downloading the zip archive file or the executable installer for each build. What you don't have access to is any information on changes made to a particular build. You can find a changelog for the nightly builds here. If you'd rather not use the checker, you can always head to Google's directory of the latest nightly builds for Chrome. With the amount of updates Google is putting out for Chrome, we'd recommend sticking with the checker in order to keep up. It's small, simple, and a huge time saver.

  1. I'm not sure I'd call builds being released up to 10 times a day "nightly".

It's nice to see Google putting all their builds out like this, but changelogs would be nice.

  2. There is a changelog, but it's not formatted very well to be read.

In every folder you have changelog.xml
    Like this:

  3. Thanks for the link to the changelog Jeton.

  4. You can update Chrome by opening the drop down under the wrench icon. It will tell you if there is an update available, and it will start an update process if you choose to.

  5. You can update Chrome by opening the drop down under the wrench icon to 'About Google Chrome.' It will tell you if there is an update available, and it will start an update process if you choose to.

  6. I am glad to hear it. I loved Chrome but have run into a couple of problems. One is that one of my Brokerage house' website is not supported. I am going to check for updates right now. Hopefully that will change fast!

  7. Chrome is the official release from Google I think version 0.2.149.29 which is what I have.

Where as Google Chromium is the open-source project behind Google Chrome. This is where the nightly builds live http://code.google.com/chromium/ If you install this version it will re-install a new version of Google Chromeium on your PC. I dont think it affects the Chrome release.

  8. Which is the best to use right now? Chrome or Chromium? Or does it not mater that much?

  9. This article is about the nightly builds which don't have an automatic checker built-in. I stated that in the article. However, the beta Google Chrome release does have a built-in update checker.

  10. It should be noted that the link to these updates are related to Chromium (the open source version).
Chrome on the other hand, is somewhat differently updated (and less i believe).

For example the latest chromium build reads RSS feeds correctly, while Chrome still can't interpret them as RSS feeds.

There are a lot of interesting links that help you find all kinds of information.

Here's the issues list, you can suggest/report issues here: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/list

Details about all builds are here:
    http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/waterfall/

The most interesting part is this:
    http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/waterfall/builders/Chromium%20XP.html

It shows the current status of the build, if it's done, or when it's supposed to be done. Also you get a link to a more detailed changelog I believe here:
    http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/waterfall/builders/Chromium%20XP/builds/123.1.html
    That's the latest build.

  12. When are installers going to use rsync for this nonsense instead of downloading the whole thing everytime? It works very well for software.

  13. Here is my own modified updater which originally referenced from http://shakalaca.wordpress.com/2007/08/08/portable-firefox-nightly-build-updater/

I simply modify the url from firefox3nightly to the url above.

    Here is the updater http://11m.3b8.cc
The updater.exe was build from autoit script, which means you can re-build it yourself from the src "updater.au3" for security reasons.

  15. Hi,

Thank you for the idea behind this program. I took the liberty to create a version with a couple of more features:

    - changelog support
    - automatic update
    - Select build number

You can find the new version
    here

Hope you like it, please give me feedback on what you want added/fixed.

    Regards,

    Kjartan
