Get Firefox...If You Can

Written by Sarah Perez / June 17, 2008 10:31 AM / 12 Comments

As you may know, today is Firefox's big day: June 17th: Download Day. At Mozilla, they've set a goal to achieve the Guinness World Record for the most downloads in 24 hours. The number they want to reach is 5 million. This may turn out to be tough because as of 1 PM ET, the Firefox download page at www.getfirefox.com was to feature the download for the new Firefox 3 web browser. Instead, it features nothing. The site is down.

Considering that they were preparing for a record-breaking day, you would think that they would have also prepared for this:

Despite what that error message says, it's not really the network connection that has been interrupted - they've been overloaded.

So, if you're just dying to get your hands on a new browser today, may I suggest a couple of alternatives instead?

UPDATE #1: getfirefox.com is pointing to Firefox 2 again. The Download Day page is displaying this:

UPDATE #2: Bwana McCall has posted direct download links. Here they are:

UPDATE #3: You can track the number of downloads Firefox 3 has had on Wakoopa's site here.

  1. I guess it was predictable...
Still not as annoying as IE though. :)

  2. Hey Sarah,

I used Bwana's direct download link. But I just checked Help -> Release Notes, and I have RC3 not 3.0 Stable! I think I have the wrong version. And I'm not sure my download added to the counter: http://downloadcounter.sj.mozilla.com/

    Just letting you know. Bye!

  6. Well, I believe RC3 was the final RC, so it is basically the same thing as 3.0.

I'm still waiting for the official links, though, to be sure my download is counted ;-)

  7. Mirrors don't count toward the world record. This direct link is working:

    http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-US

( edit URL for your OS )

  8. I tried to install FF3 from a direct link...and it installed Release Candidate 3. The firefox homepage (as of 3:45 EST) had no mention of Firefox 3...just Firefox 2.

I ended up having to head to Europe to get FF3...which worked swimmingly:

  9. Firefox 3 rocks and is super fast as promised. Optimize your FF3 experience with Firefox’s recommended add-on, the Me.dium Social Toolbar. Find us on AMO: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4365

Friend pjn, gfigg, and jenniferlauren so we can surf around together in Me.dium and talk about how Fx3 kicks @$$!! http://blogme.dium.com/content/2008/06/welcome-firefox-3-users

  11. I must be one of the very few people who thinks that Firefox 3 speed is better but is not as great as advertised. I still have hope that one day a lighter version would come out that takes out a bunch of fancy things that I don't really need and add up to memory usage.
