Eric Schmidt References Google Office Suite

google

Interesting LA Times article about how Google is re-focusing on improving and integrating its current products, rather than pumping out new products willy-nilly. Included in the article is this quote about 'Google Office':

"The initiative's primary goal is to make Google products easier to use, especially by packaging disparate products. For example, said Chief Executive Eric Schmidt, Google plans to combine its spreadsheet, calendar and word-processing programs into one suite of Web-based applications."

p.s. yes I did jump the gun earlier this week with what turned out to be bogus screenshots of Google Office and other Google mock-ups. I quickly pulled the post out of embarrassment!

  • Richard,

Having a wide range of offerings which are not integrated confuses and ultimately looses customers. Even from web 2.0 perspective user experience is the king. I think that Google explored a lot of stand alone, siloed solutions and it is now time to bring them all together.

  • Yes I agree Alex - I think this will improve the quality of Goog products over time, which will help remove that "throw against the wall and see what sticks" rep they've acquired over the past couple of years.

  • It will be hard for them combine Writely with Gmail and Google Calendar. Writely should need a code refactoring and be rewritten with GWT. But it's a proven model (it was the most successful web based web processing service); so IMO, the upcoming spreadsheets and presentation services should be designed more with Writely approaches.

  • I've been using Writely for quite a while now, and it's a very solid, reliable product. I think integration with other Google service, most importantly GMail would be nice, but in my eyes the other Google Office products should become more like Writely, not the other way round.
