Happy Birthday World Wide Web!

Written by Richard MacManus / August 6, 2006 2:02 PM / 25 Comments

original WWW logo15 years ago today, Tim Berners-Lee publicly released his WWW project onto the Internet. According to Wikipedia:

"On August 6, 1991, he [TBL] posted a short summary of the World Wide Web project on the alt.hypertext newsgroup. This date also marked the debut of the Web as a publicly available service on the Internet."

As the Wikipedia states, this was the point when hypertext was married to the Internet.

The original alt.hypertext posting is still available, thanks to Google Groups:

"The WWW project merges the techniques of information retrieval and hypertext to make an easy but powerful global information system."

Also note that Berners-Lee made available the first Web browser - "prototype (very alpha test) simple line mode browser" - and the first hypertext editor. For, you know, reading and writing on the Web ;-)

  8. Yes, and before that there was, in 1960, Ted Nelson and Project Xanadu, and in 1962, Marshall McLuhan and "The Gutenberg Galaxy" (still in print and still a fascinating read).

We are still dealing with issues that Nelson and McLuhan discussed. Forty years ... technology takes time to become absorbed into culture.

  12. oh my god, the web is such a fucking USELESS tool, i cant understand why you people are all so happy that its been around for 15 years already. i mean, it just invites a bunch of hackers to take over your whole computer, while all it does for you is that it gives access to some shitty online games and porn, thats basically it. we were so much better off in the good old days before computers were around, i cant believe all you geeky motherfuckers have become corrupted by comps. the PC takes all your free time, and ruin your eyes. i wish the fucking internet had never been invented, goddamit.
