Christmas is a holiday that brings people together, so perhaps it should be no surprise that Facebook has become a part of millions of peoples' Christmas experiences. For the first time in its history, Facebook was the number one most visited website in the United States on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day this year, according to traffic analyst firm Hitwise today.

That's worth noting. HitWise reported last year that Facebook was number two behind Google on Christmas. People say that Facebook vs. Google will be the Web's biggest battle in coming years - but it looks like Facebook has already won the battle for Christmas.

Throughout 2009, Google and Yahoo! Mail were both bigger than Facebook, Hitwise says. Facebook was the most popular search query of the last year across all search engine use by U.S. users, however. It's a social network's world these days.

One Christmas gift Facebook users may not have expected: December's major shift away from Facebook's initial nature as a privacy-centric social network. Apparently that didn't slow people down from visiting the site on the holidays.

  5. I think Facebook might be bigger than Google in terms of traffic from next year but they will no where near Google's revenue amounts. It will take some time for Facebook to realise Google's revenues unless they enter Google's niche.

  6. I'm a little surprised. My network has been very, very quiet this year (I wasn't on FB last year). I figured that Facebook activity must slow over the holidays since people aren't at work so much and have a life.

  9. Well, remember when everyone was getting a mySpace account to meet up with long lost friends and relatives?

Then came the competition that worked.

I personally think things are going to go a different way in about five years. I'll make a post at my personal blog on what I think will be the future of social networking.

  11. Very interesting. I guess most people realize it's because of all the "Merry Christmas" status updates.

Can we take that to mean Facebook has more users than people who visit Google on an average day?

  15. This is totally understandable because Facebook is reconnecting friends and relatives all around the globe in a world wide phenomenon of socialising to a degree that people could never have previously imagined. Even kids who may only briefly know each other are now able to connect on a very personal level thanks to facebook. Plus everyone has a directly personal insight into each others personal lives thanks to the public presentation of photographs that two decades ago would have been confined to a traditional photo album only to be brought out to embarrass new inlaws or at special ocasions to reminisce over a glass of wine.
