Keep Your Profiles in Sync with Atomkeep

Written by Corvida / August 3, 2008 8:45 AM / 7 Comments

There's a new social network that pops up everyday. Most of us can't count on one hand how many social networks that we are currently apart of. Even with all these networks, there's only a handful that we continuously update. Sometimes there's just too many and some get left behind in the tedious process of updating our profile information. Atomkeep aims to help you keep all your profiles in sync with the click of a button.

Adding Your Profiles on Popular Social Networks

Atomkeep is a service that aims to help users keep their profiles in sync across multiple networks. Registration is as simple as typing in your email address and a password. A confirmation email will be sent to your email address for verification. Unlike most sites, Atomkeep does not immediately prompt you to enter in the typical user information such as your name, birthday, etc. Instead, you're immediately taken to the 'Manage Accounts' page to choose from a list of social networks to import or merge existing data from. You can use your profiles from other networks to fill in your Atomkeep profile or manually add in this information yourself.

Supported networks for Atomkeep include:

  • Twitter
  • Plurk
  • Disqus
  • Facebook
  • Technorati
  • Blogger
  • WordPress
  • LinkedIn
  • Flickr
  • Last.FM
  • Ning
  • Pownce
  • Yelp
  • Youtube

Tons more are also supported with support for numerous more social networks on the way.

Synchronizing Your Profiles

You can synchronize all of your profiles or just one by providing your password for each account on the synchronization page. Atomkeep also shows you the synchronization process for each account that you choose to sync. Here's a demo video of how the synchronization process works.

Too Many Social Networks

Are we spreading ourselves so thin across the web that we have to create more utilities in order to keep up? When services such as Atomkeep pop-up, one wonders if maybe we're joining too many social networks. On the other hand, there's no denying that Atomkeep is a handy tool if you're forever changing your information and can't stand the process of updating each of your accounts one by one.

  3. Bah - that video didn't convince me. That would be a lot of passwords to change.

  4. I think multiple social networking sites (each with unique functionality) work far more better than one big site with "applications" on it, like Facebook. With the Facebook model, you don't have the problem of having your user data spread out everywhere, so in that sense it could be considered more elegant. Yet, the "decentralized" model allows for more freedom, and services like atomkeep (and thoughs about attribute exchange from openid) prove that keeping data in sync doesn't need to be a burden.

It's only a matter of time when ideas like the ideas from Openid, Gnip and Atomkeep become ubiquitous. In the end, I'd consider it very natural for the web browser to create a seamless experience between the different networking sites, kind of like Facebook is now providing the glue between their apps.

  5. This seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. I'd like to see research that shows site visitors are unhappy with the number of steps they have to take to update the "large number" of profiles they keep online. And that they are willing to invest in yet another profile, somewhere. I'm guessing it isn't that big of a deal for a lot of people.

  6. Cole: Why should I manually have to sync something as simple as a profile between MySpace, Facebook, Orkut, Ning and a few specialty sites I'm a member of?

Atomkeep is only necessary because the big boys refuse to play nice with each other, just like the IM networks' pissing contest makes IM across networks such a pain in the ass. But they are being childish and selfish, so Atomkeep is extremely helpful.

I guess unlike you I just have friends on more than one network. Sorry you don't see any benefit. Try getting out more.

  7. Sounds like a cool service. Saw the same thing for musicians on a site called ArtistData. http://www.artistdata.com

You can update MySpace, PureVolume, LastFM, Virb, Pollstar, Jambase, and a bunch more.. I think they're adding more as time goes on ..
