LinkedIn Launches Powerful Events Feature

Written by Marshall Kirkpatrick / November 7, 2008 1:21 PM / 14 Comments

What hot events should I attend in my industry? That's a frequently asked question in many professional conversations. LinkedIn today offers a great way to answer that question with the launch of its new Events feature.

LinkedIn Events offers not just event search, but recommendations based on the contents of your profile, sophisticated information about attendees and updates about the events in your LinkedIn update feed. Eight thousand events are already listed and event organizers can ad more.

The recommendations are key here. Recommendation is like the search you didn't even know you wanted to do - it's a great way to surface value from noise.

Unfortunately the events page is down at press time, but we look forward to its return.

We like LinkedIn alot here at ReadWriteWeb (it's one of the primary news sources for our new site about hiring activity) and we think Events is a great addition to the service. The events feature appears to be built on the OpenSocial platform, so there's a good chance that these features will be available in other settings beyond LinkedIn in the future.

  5. marshall, i'm amazed by this IM interface. it occurs to me that FF could straight steal traffic from twitter by migrating the conversation around imported twitter statuses into FF.

  7. Great..Lets see how long this feature last before getting spammed by everyone and their dog, just like the group discussion feature. :)

  8. Wait..it is down? It is nothing like a large million dollar company screwing up their launch traffic. Fail

  9. As a company that offers on-line community / social networks for conferences and events, Pathable (http://www.pathable.com/) is certainly interested in seeing LinkedIn's attempt in this space.

Looks like it fits in well with the rest of their profile elements and network, but it's interesting to see that that they are more focused on helping people find events than on actually connecting with people once they're there.

At Pathable, we emphasize tools that help you sift through the thousands of people at a conference to find the ones that you ought to meet, but may not have made a connection with yet, and on providing tools to build relationships once you've identified interesting connections. I'll be curious to see whether LinkedIn heads in this direction.

  10. this makes good sense for Li and members.
I'm looking forward to the next wave of apps on their platform.

Friendfeed does a great job with all the interfaces I've used.

When will we see a rww re the specifics of how that all works?

  12. Congrats on the launch, LinkedIn.

Eventbrite is very pleased to now be able to distribute our vast directory of business events to this valuable audience.

  13. This is a neat move, but it's nothing new. Business-Scene.com has been events centric for a long time and we are just about to add the same to WeCanDo.BIZ. Ours will contain breakfast networking club meetings as well as large events, all listed locally. We find many of our SME members are also avid face to face networking fans too.

  14. Like the idea. Hopefully they can tie it into their database in a good way and really recommend relevant events based on both your profile and your connections.

Cool stuff. I am hoping someday to outsource my thinking to the computer...looks like that day is coming.
