Top 10 Web Widgets

Widgets are mini web applications that you can insert into your website and/or social networks. They're a popular way to add interesting third party content to your web presence. In this post we look at the top web widgets from Yola and Widgetbox. It's clear from our analysis that widgets are well past the early adopter stage and are now very mainstream.

Yola, the website building service formerly known as SynthaSite, sent us a list of the top 10 widgets for its 3 million plus community - many of whom are small business owners. We compare that list below with the most popular widgets from more consumer-focused Widgetbox.

Sponsor

Yola's top 10 list tells us that Google widgets proliferate (4 of them are in the top 10), media widgets are popular (numbers 1, 4, 8) and communication widgets are well used (2, 5, 7).

YouTube

Blog Page Widget

Google Ad Sense

Flickr Lightbox

Meebo Chat Room

Google Maps

Skype Me!

Google Video

Wufoo Form

Collect Donation Widget

It's a little surprising that there's no mention of Facebook or Twitter widgets, but perhaps in a few more months they will be in Yola's top 10.

For a more consumer-focused look at the most popular widgets, we checked out Widgetbox's all-time Most Popular List. Widgetbox provides widgets for social sites - including MySpace, Blogger, Facebook, WordPress, TypePad and iGoogle. Their top 10 shows that gaming, fun and pregnancy tickers (!) are most popular.

Super Mario Game

Baby Ticker - The Baby Countdown Pregnancy Ticker

cyber-pet

Mario Time Trial

Maukie - the virtual cat

Bubbles

Baby & Pregnancy Countdown Ticker

MP3 Player

Swidget 1.0

Super Mario Bros (with Luigi)

Neither list is especially surprising, but it's good to see that widgets are being well utilized by mainstream people.

Let us know if you have a favorite web widget and if so, where do you host it?

Top Topic Trackers (Updated List)

Last week we listed and categorized some of the leading topic-tracking tools on the Web. As usual we got a great response in the comments, with additional information about the apps listed and suggestions for other apps to add. So in this post we present an updated list of topic tracking tools for you to explore. Once again, we invite you to add more in the comments and/or comment on the existing ones.

We've also added links, to make it easier for you to check these services out.

Sponsor

Feed and/or Email Services

These are services that output RSS and/or other formats, such as email notification. We think this type of topic feed tool is the most flexible, particularly when it outputs RSS. With RSS feed output, you can do further filtering or grouping of the feeds inside an RSS reader like Google Reader or Netvibes.

Collecta

GigaAlert (limited free service)

Google Alerts

PubSub

Regator

Swamii (email only, no RSS)

Topikality

Trackle (email only, no RSS)

Woofeed (email or mobile, no RSS; it also provides a publishing service for bloggers)

Yahoo Pipes

Yotify (email only)

Destination Services

These services don't output RSS or emails for topic searches. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it just means you have to visit the destination site to see results every day.

Cascaad

Ensembli (offers email digests)

Guzzle.it

LazyFeed

My6Sense

Technorati

YourVersion

Social Filter

These services show what is popular or new amongst their respective communities. There are many other such services, so the following is just a sample:

Delicious feeds

Google Trends

MashLogic

Searchtastic ("smart Twitter search")

Trendistic ("see trends in Twitter")

Twazzup (Twitter search)

Twitscoop (Twitter search)

Twitter search (e.g. for hashtags)

Community Curated

Similar to social filter services, only these have a specific community driving the output of stories. Again, the below is a small sample:

Digg

Hacker News

Reddit

Slashdot

People Curated

Topic-focused blogs (such as ReadWriteWeb!) are great for tracking topics on the Web. In recent times, light blogging services have offered an easy way for individuals or small groups of people to curate information on a given topic.

See also: interesting post by Tony Karrer about "topic hubs" for bloggers.

Favit (see also this follow-up post on the Favit blog for details about their topic tracking features)

NewsCred

Posterous

Tumblr

Aggregators / Portals

These services aggregate, or group, news and other stories around a specific topic.

Alltop

BuzzFeed

Eqentia

Google Fast-Flip feeds

icurrent

LinksAlpha

NewsTwit

PopURLS

SNS Touch

Topix

TopSite

Tweetmeme

ViewsFlow

Market Intelligence

These are professional brand management services that you typically have to pay for. Many of them include topic tracking. Here's a sample...

Filtrbox

PeopleBrowsr

Trendrr

Please add your further suggestions to our categorized lists in the comments.

3 Awesome New Apps for 2010: Thesixtyone, Quora, Plancast

It's a new year and it's time for you to try some fabulous new web apps. We look at new apps all day around here and would like to share 3 of the very best we've found already this new year.

Music discovery, social Q&A and sharing your plans - that's what these apps are all about. Read on, I'm pretty sure that at least one of these will get you jumping up and down, clapping your hands. It's stuff like this that makes me love the internet.

Sponsor

thesixtyone

thesixtyone isn't brand-new but it just relaunched with a gorgeous new design and we learned this morning that the YCombinator-backed music exploration site has also taken funding from Creative Commons CEO Joi Ito and his investing buddy Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn.

It's hard to describe thesixtyone. It's a very feature-rich music discovery site and marketplace, with user voting, a game made up of listening quests and big, full-screen photos all over the site. It's a joy to explore. There's all kinds of little quirks, like you can limit the music you're shown by genre. Did I mention there's really big pictures?

Music, game play, big pictures, hot financial backing - this one's an app to watch, and listen-to as the case may be. Jumping up and down, clapping my hands? Well yes, I am now that I've found TheSixtyOne.

Quora

Take a team of early Facebook engineering rock-stars, have them tackle the age-old field of Question & Answer and what do you get? Quora, a social Q&A site that is a whole lot of fun to use and a great place to learn things trivial or useful. The company's goal is to create a timeless, best-consensus knowledge collection on a wide variety of topics and with more participation than you find on Wikipedia. So far the site is mostly a hang-out for Silicon Valley insiders (it's in closed beta) but as more and more of the rest of us filter in - hopefully the excellent user-experience can scale.

It's more general-interest (if less populated) than StackOverflow and its clones, it's more social (if slower) than Aardvark and it's more usable (if less immediately stimulating of the intellect) than Hunch.

I'm "following" (subscribed to) topics on Quora like startups, journalism, food and the New York Times. I've been going back to Quora multiple times a day every day for weeks, because it's so much fun to see what new questions have been asked, what new answers offered, what answers have been voted up and what new topics you can follow.

Plancast

"What are you doing?" It was only a matter of time until someone decided that question was too slow. Plancast asks what you are planning on doing. Started by former TechCrunch writer Mark Hendrickson and launched in December, Plancast is on fire right now. Robert Scoble asked this week whether it was going to pull a Twitter/SXSW and with the flurry of sign-ups I'm seeing, that seems possible.

It's fun to see the plans that friends have in the long and short term. My friend Mark Krynsky is going to DrupalCon in April. I'm going to the Post Office on Sandy Blvd. in an hour, then I'll grab lunch in the area. Interested in joining either of us in those plans? Now you can, thanks to Plancast. It's fun.

Those are the three apps I've been most excited about in 2010 so far. What new apps have you been trying out so far this year? Let us know in comments.

Flightcaster

Not sure if your flight will leave on time? Surprisingly, the airlines often don't have the most accurate information. Flights will show up as 'On Time,' even though your plane, which is supposed to take off in 15 minutes, is still sitting on another airport 500 miles away. FlightCaster looks at data from the airlines, FAA and combines this with historical data and weather information to give you a more accurate picture. The result is a good prediction whether your flight will leave on time.

Flightcaster is available as an iPhone and Blackberry app. The service is also available on FlightCaster's website.

WorldMate

WorldMate, which is available in a free and Pro version for the iPhone, BlackBerry and most other mobile phone operating systems, gives you a one-stop shop for all your travel info. You can simply email receipts for your flight and hotel bookings to a private Worldmate address and the software will automatically update your itineraries on the mobile app. What makes the pro version so useful is that WorldMate also alerts you of delays and gate changes through push notifications and SMS messages. WorldMate also offers a list of nearby hotels and the ability to search for alternative flights if yours gets cancelled.

TripIt's iPhone app offers similar service.

TripCase

TripCase offers fewer features than WorldMate, but it's free and also comes with push notifications. It's available for the iPhone, Blackberry and Windows Mobile. Besides flight information and baggage claim info, TripCase also allows you to send out information about your flight status to your friends and family. You can also publish photos on your personalized TripCase site.

Next Flight

If you get bumped off an oversold flight or miss a connection, Next Flight can help you find alternative flights. The company indexes schedules from over 1,100 airlines and 4,200 airports around the world. Next Flight currently sells for $2.99 in the App Store.

Flight Status

If you are just picking somebody up at the airport, Flight Status is a nice iPhone app that gives you arrival information, including which baggage claim to go to. Flight Status is only available for the iPhone and costs $4.99. Flight Status was developed by the same company as Next Flight and also features data from 1,100 airlines.

Bonus: Flight Advisor Twitter Feed

If you just want to get a quick overview of airport delays in the US, also have a look at the Flight Advisor Twitter feed.

What About You?

Wikipedia's Most Visited Pages: Beatles, Jacko, YouTube

Prior to 2001, gilded hard cover encyclopedias were cracked to fact check everything from raptor names to State capitals. Today the world's most popular English encyclopedia is more often used to identify pop culture icons and social media companies. A recent Telegraph article listed the 50 most-viewed Wikipedia articles of 2008 and 2009 and while the results are slightly inaccurate, they're pretty interesting. Below are this year's most visited Wikipedia pages measured in hits per day.

Sponsor

1. Wiki (131,383 page hits per day): For both 2008 and 2009 the "Wiki" page and the Wikipedia page have maintained a spot in the top 10 visited pages. It's fairly safe to say that the majority of visitors to these articles are looking for definitions, community information and editing tips.

2. The Beatles (111,896): In the Telegraph's list for 2008, two different Beatles pages are listed as numbers 14 and 18 for 2008; however, according to the original Wikistics source statistics the "Beatles" page is ranked at number 20. In 2009, the page became the second most visited page on Wikipedia due to automated requests. The fact that the Fab Four's catalogue is due to be re-released in digitally remastered format within the year also can't hurt page traffic.

3. Michael Jackson (79,734): Not surprisingly, Michael Jackson's page is among the most viewed pages on Wikipedia. The day after Jackson's death the page received 5.9 million views. Of the top 10 most-viewed Wikipedia pages of 2009, Jackson's name is also mentioned on the Deaths in 2009 page and briefly in the Beatles page due to his controversial purchase of most of the Lennon-McCartney Beatles catalog in 1985.

*Favicon.ico (78,077): While the Telegraph articles lists this as number 4, it's irrelevant as the Wikistics stat source cites that the Favicon.ico ranking includes browser-based requests for the Wikipedia icon.

4. YouTube (72,318): Whether looking to cite corporate info or simply interested in finding out what the fuss is all about, Wikipedians have flocked to both YouTube and Facebook pages for the last two years.

5. Wikipedia (52,542)

6. Barack Obama (49,401): In 2008 the Barack Obama page was the 3rd most visited page on Wikipedia and not surprisingly, interest has dwindled post-election. Sarah Palin's page (64,465) was the 4th most visited page in 2008 and John McCain's page (34,486) was the 13th most visited page.

7. Deaths in 2009 (48,758): Apparently the public is clamoring to remember those they've lost in 2009. Both the Deaths in 2008 page and the 2009 page have made the top 10 list of most visited Wikipedia pages. It looks like memorial sites like My Death Space and Respectance aren't such a strange idea after all.

8. United States (46,545): This page offers basic information on politics, economics, demographics and customs of the United States. With a large population and a large number of Wikipedians hailing from the US, the page is a popular one. Surprisingly it is not listed on the community's most vandalized pages. Meanwhile both the US Democratic Party and Republican Party pages are listed.

9. Facebook (42,679)

10. Wikipedia Current Events Portal (40,962): This page lists daily news topics and the latest Wikinews articles. It is a great source for breaking news stories. The page also links to recent deaths and ongoing events such as the automotive industry crisis.

For the Telegraph's entire list visit the article. You can also check them against Wikistics list of yearly page hits for 2008 and 2009.

Another interesting resource is Wikipedia's most popular articles within the last hour. While recently deceased celebrities appeared on this list at the time this article was written, there were definitely some interesting anomalies. For instance, the Ernie Davis Wikipedia page saw a dramatic increase in hits. When cross-referenced against real time search engine Collecta it appears HBO was airing the Ernie Davis biography "The Express". Audience members were simultaneously watching television while searching for Davis' biography.

UN and Google Create Climate Change Mapping Resources

In January 2009, only 41% of US voters believed that global warming was caused by fossil fuel emissions and other man-made causes. According to a recent Rasmussen national report, the majority of those surveyed over the phone believed that global warming was part of a natural planetary trend that will reverse itself over time. In a panic to sway public perception and environmental decision making, the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat recently teamed up with Google to create a Greenhouse Gas Map detailing man's environmental pollution. The map is a color-coded Google Maps mash up that pulls national greenhouse gas inventory and Kyoto Protocol data to display toxic emissions in industrialized nations. The tool was created in anticipation of the UN's Climate Change Conference to be held at the end of this year.

Sponsor

As the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012, leaders from more than 150 countries will convene in Copenhagen to establish a post-Kyoto global climate change agreement. A simple look at the map's lethal levels of carbon dioxide make a good case for stricter emission limits. While the project is certainly one of the more recent environmental map mash ups, a number of efforts have already been implemented. Below are four additional green mapping projects.

1. Atlas of Our Changing Environment: The United Nations Environment Program uses Google Earth to exhibit time lapse and environmental changes. From the effects of coal exploitation in northeastern Wyoming's Powder River Basin, to controlled burning in Australia's Wyperfeld National Park, to the growth of the aquaculture industry in Ecuador's Guayaquil - the map shows human implications on the environment. One of the great things about this tool is that in addition to negative effects, you can also see how proper urban planning can help preserve large sections of forest.

2. Stopping the Coal Rush Map: The Sierra Club also utilizes Google Earth to make its case for environmental responsibility and clean energy alternatives. The organization has mapped the country's planned coal plants in recognition that the air pollution pumped from these plants is likely to increase public health issues and global warming. The colored pinpoints on the map signify the building status of the coal plant and the details behind the site's permits. In some cases you can read where Sierra Club has lobbied the Environmental Protection Agency to overturn air permits.

3. Earth Knowledge: This site mashes up Google map information with news stories on biodiversity, climate change, geology and water pollution. News sources like Science Daily and Reuters offer stories on global sustainability and alternative energy. Users can also discuss topics with other community members.

4. Home Project Maplet: For this year's World Environment Day, Google launched the Home Project- a full length feature film on climate change. Shot by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, the movie is an aerial look at the planet and climate change. In conjunction with the movie, Google released an amazing map applet, complete with geo-tagged Wikipedia, video, web cam and photo layers. Users can also find tagged information on biodiversity, global warming factors, water and poverty.

Thousands of secrets have been divulged under the tawdry yellow light of an Amstel Light promotional sign. Low-grade alcohol and smoke-stained pleather booths make for amazingly soothing corporate confessionals. In some dark and magical way, the siren's song of happy hour coaxes coworkers into revealing the real reasons they smite you in the workplace. Messy divorces, deaths in the family and financial turmoil - I've heard it all. If you can uncover the truth you might just be able to save your team. And if your team doesn't need saving, then happy hour is a great reason to get together with friends. In addition to the obvious bar finding tools like Yelp and Citysearch, below are a couple resources to help you enjoy your off-site work excursions:

Sponsor

1. Happy-Hour.com: This service allows users to search for bars via postal code. Listings including a full selection of happy hour specials and their hours. One unique feature of this service is that users can rate their favorite bars. For those of you who enjoy the hermit-like exclusivity of your favorite bar, you might want to ease off on the glowing review for fear of seeing your watering hole gain worldwide popularity.

2.Unthirsty: This site is a particularly useful geek site as it allows users to search for bars serving food and offering wifi access. The patio search is a great idea, but there are definitely some discrepancies with the information. Users should call ahead to ensure that their destination has wifi.

3. Buy Your Friend A Drink: Rather than buying your friend a $1 fake drink on Facebook, you can buy them a real drink and email them a gift certificate while they're at work. This is a nice way to surprise someone at the end of a long work day.

4. Mappy Hour: This site lets users upload their reviews and happy hour recommendations on a Google Map. This is a great tool for those looking to make multiple stops. In order to save yourself from embarrassing moments, you might want to schedule a stop for dinner as well.

5.My Open Bar: My Open Bar is available in New York and Chicago and offers weekly listings on events serving cheap and free alcohol. From artists' receptions to cd release parties, this site is a great resource for those looking to wet their whistle on the cheap.

6.Coovents: There's something about those New Yorkers. Coovents is a happy hour mapping service with a Twitter feed and text messaging service. From half priced sangria in Nolita to $1 beer in the Burg, New Yorkers get the best deals on booze as they happen.

7. MyOrder: This service is outrageously obnoxious unless you're in one of those particularly crowded happy hours where you're at constant risk of losing your seat, or you just can't tear yourself away from a ball game or show. The application allows you to make your order directly from your phone without having to flag down a server. Keep in mind that if you're going to treat your wait staff like a beer bot, it's probably best to dish out some extra dinero for a tip.

Drink responsibly and enjoy!

The Favorite iPhone Apps of Five Geek Rock Stars

Apps on the iPhone are a big deal, but there are so many of them that it can be hard to find the good ones. It's fun to compare your own selections with favorites from friends and we thought it could be fun as well to see what some well known geeks around the web say are their favorite apps.

Below you'll find app recommendations from the following people: Matt Mullenweg, founder of WordPress, Chris Messina, open source community organizer, Marnie Webb, co-CEO of TechSoup Global, Baratunde Thurston, Web Editor at The Onion and Andy Baio, founder of Upcoming.org and now CTO at the soon to launch startup Kickstarter.com. We hope you enjoy these recommendations and we encourage you to share your own in comments.

Seven e-Learning and Teaching Resources

While the down economy continues to hurt funding to our schools, more and more teachers are looking to web-based services to help educate their students. Whether it's through open resource projects like CK-12, virtual classrooms like those in Second Life, or through the repurposing of tools like Twitter, millions of teachers are finding innovative resources to engage their students. If you're a teacher, here are seven great tools to get you started.

Sponsor

1. Scitable: Geared towards advanced high school and college science students, Nature Education launched Scitable to provide free online access to more than 180 overviews of key scientific and genetics concepts. The tool consists of a 220-article content library (often cited from members of the Nature Publishing group, more than 200 virtual classrooms set up by teachers across the globe, and a mentor network of experts poised to answer student questions. Educators and students can upload their own content for exploration and discussion, while the content library provides a number of articles accepted as valid sources at the university level.

2. Edutopia: The George Lucas Educational Foundation launched Edutopia in the hopes of creating educational best practices for multimedia in the classroom. The site includes online polls, curated blogs, assessment tools and a dedicated magazine for educators at the K-12 levels. The 2009 Webby Award winning site's best content is in its library of high-production videos for teachers and educators.

3. LearnHub: LearnHub is a network where members can create their own communities, share lessons, chat, create tests and tutor each other online at no cost. Schools create their own virtual classrooms where students complete assignments, play games and share photos and text. One of the great features of this site is that the site's report generator allows teachers to track users' progress. While the content is not as in-depth as Scitable's, this is a good site for standardized test preparation and basic K-12 education exercises. For more examples of test preparation sites, see our RWW list of resources.

4. Moodle: Moodle is a free open-source course management platform designed to help teachers create better online resources. Microsoft Education Labs recently announced a new Live@edu plug-in for Moodle. Now in addition to providing lesson plan, assignment and quiz-making tools for teachers, schools also gain access to Outlook Live for e-mail, Office Live Workspace for document sharing, Windows Messenger for chat and Windows Live SkyDrive for 25 GB of storage. This tool is slightly more advanced than some of the others in the industry, but it does offer a number of scalable solutions.

5. Edmodo: Edmodo is a private micro-blogging service for schools that allows teachers to edit privacy options within their virtual classrooms. Educators generate a join code and students log-in to chat, link to files, share notes and check their collective calendars for upcoming exams, quizzes and Pro-D days. While some of the other tools we've presented offer an open-access learning environment, this invite-only service offers students the chance to utilize web-based multimedia tools while allowing teachers to control an online discussion's security.

6. YouTube Edu: YouTube Edu allows students and educators to access lectures from leading educators across the country. For example, Yale and Brandeis University professors upload their lessons for public enjoyment. One of the most popular Channels is the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning - a collaboration launched by the Indian Institutes of Technology and Science in Bangalore.

7. ESL Video: ESL Video allows language educators to create quizzes from virtually any video on the internet. From here they can embed their quizzes into their classroom sites or redirect students to the ESL Video domain. Teachers tailor their video quizzes to specific learning units or create simple vocabulary quizzes like the one I made below using YouTube videos. While this tool may not be as sophisticated as some of the above services, its merit comes from the fact that teachers can incorporate pop culture products into their lesson plans with very little effort. Judging by the fact that the below Miley Cyrus video has more than 92 million YouTube views, teachers may be able to harness this tool to ignite a love of learning.

Miley Cyrus 7 Things Quiz
Let's be honest here, you're the educators! If you've got your own favorite resources, add them in the comments below.

Let's go Sale-ing: A Web-Savvy Yardsale Resource

A friend recently held a garage sale to purge all of his worldly possessions. At 8:58am before the final tables were out, men and women circled the block like buzzards over a fresh kill. The first group included punky-looking eBay dealers, antique collectors and audiophiles looking for rare dance hall vinyls. The second wave consisted of board game enthusiasts, recycled clothing designers, preschool teachers and espresso-touting Shabby Chic home decorators. And finally, at about 2pm, the geeks and bike-enthusiasts came to claim the last Playstation games, computer parts, brake levers and tubes.

Garage sales are no longer just for blue-haired grandmothers with teacup fetishes. While eBay and <a href="http"//etsy.com">Etsy are great for selling rare or specialty items, setting up an auction or store for your mismatched cutlery might not get you the results you need. One blessing in this down economy is that we're learning to reclaim and recycle in a way that our grandmothers have been doing for years. Whether you like haggling over weird items on a Sunday or you'd simply like to list your own sale, here are some great resources.

Sponsor

1. Weekend Treasure: This site does a great job of pulling listings from Craigslist and other sites and aggregating them onto a map. The nice thing about this site is that once you've drilled down to your targeted listing, you can view the source article for further details.

2. GSALR: This site improves where Craigslist leaves off. While it does not offer images from sales, it does offer a map of the region, an RSS feed on new listings and a trip planner for multi-sale routes. Garage Sale Nation offers a similar tool, and the most results seem to appear in Massachusetts, Virginia, New York and Michigan.

Yard Sale Search: This site is extremely bare bones, but if you're just looking for a site to list all of the multi-family sales in your area, the results are quick and plentiful.

3. ZipGarage: ZipGarage is a site where garage sale hunters type in their postal code and receive results on sales in their area. RWW first wrote about ZipGarage in 2007. While this site is perhaps one of the best designed garage sale sites, it still lacks the users. If you're having a sale, you might still want to embed the widget to give directions to your users.

4. Upcoming and Facebook Events: Your friends DO want to buy your junk, or at the very least they want to spend Sunday drinking beer on your lawn. A great way to kick start a yard sale is to reach out to your online networks, prepare some sandwiches and treat the event like a lawn party. Upcoming and Facebook events offer great ways to announce localized events and the best part is that your friends are likely to get calendar reminders for your sale.

5. Twitter, <a href="http://brightkite.com>Brightkite and Loopt: These location-based services are great for that last minute sale push or reminder. While nearby followers might not have planned to buy anything, if they're in the area, they just might stop by for an impulse purchase.

6.The Local Paper and Craigslist: We're sure you already know about these options, but if you're having a sale, it would be silly not to list here. With Craigslist, users can narrow their search by neighborhood and keyword, and choose to specify only those results that contain images.

*Final Tips for Sellers: After you've tweeted, listed and advertised your yard sale, remember that old school rules still apply. Some of the must-haves of a garage sales include ample signage, properly labeled tables, extra boxes and bags, a measuring tape for furniture and about $100 in small bills and quarters for change.

Musical Memes, Choosing A Netizen Anthem

There are a number of perfectly worthy anthems for the wired generation. Kraftwerk's Computer Love might suffice, or the Ataris' Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start captures the essence of devoted Konami Contra fans. But a real anthem rallies a movement. It's the kind of song that is not only widely accepted, but it inspires people to change their lives and behaviors.

The hippies have Blowin' in the Wind, the children of disco have Stayin' Alive and the GLBT community has I'm Coming Out. But what do modern day netizens consider their anthem? What gets us grooving in our guilds, cranking out our code and soldering up a mean arduino? Below are some of the top musical memes and anthems from recent years. If you got suggestions for a netizen anthem, leave them in the comments below.

Love and Longing - Code Monkey: While Jonathan Coulton is perhaps one of the greatest geek anthem musicians with songs like Re Your Brains and That Spells DNA, Code Monkey still manages to top the list with its universal themes of a struggling underdog and unrequited geek love. The song actually became the theme for G4's now defunct Code Monkeys TV series. It also spurred a number of YouTube mash ups including Mike Booth's World of Warcraft machinima video.

Pursuit of Knowledge - Free Software Song: Richard Stallman is best known as the founder of the GNU Project and father of the Free Software Foundation. A truly brilliant developer, Stallman has been writing folk songs about technology for more than a decade. His Free Software song based on Bulgarian "Sadi Moma" helped define the musical genre of "filking" - a type of folk music generally created by science fiction & fantasy fans. The song is a tribute to free culture and copyleft software licensing.

Bootstrapped Success - Crank That Soulja Boy: In early 2007, DeAndre Ramone Way, also known as Soulja Boy, was a little known rap artist with a number of tracks released on YouTube and music community SoundClick. Thanks to his Crank That Soulja Boy hit, by 2009 Way was a Grammy Award nominated artist with a record deal and his own production company. According to a Yahoo's Music blog post from May 2009, "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" has sold over 4,183,000 digital downloads in the United States, becoming the third highest-selling song ever. The song became an internet sensation after the dance tutorial video received more than 40 million YouTube views. Thousands of new videos have since been uploaded to YouTube in tribute to this anthem of a bootstrapped star.

Resurrected Oldies: A number of songs written by music superstars have since become geek anthems. Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up was resurrected after 20 years when the act of tricking individuals into listening to the song or Rickrolling became a popular meme. The Astley meme became so widespread that Astley himself Rickrolled the Macy's Day Thanksgiving parade in 2008. Meanwhile, Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" although always a popular rock ballad, got it's first taste at video meme-dom in a "Team Cyprus" video that was wildly criticized as an ostentatious display of wealth during one of the country's worst economic slumps in history. The song has since been featured in an a cappella version on the season premiere of Glee. The squeaky-clean Glee version debuted at number four on the Billboard charts.

Celebrated Amateurs: Tay Zonday's "Chocolate Rain" first became viral via 4Chan and has since landed the mahogany-voiced baritone features on Good Morning America, Jimmy Kimmel Live, a spot on Lily Allen's Freeloader Nation Tour, and several endorsement deals. Also an overnight sensation, Gary Brolsma or "the Numa Numa Guy" is best known for his animated YouTube lipsync to Moldovan band O-Zone's "Dragostea din tei." Brolsma has since been featured in a South Park episode and videos for the Bare Naked Ladies and Weezer. While neither of these songs make strong direct political or social statements, the fact that they are so widely embraced, is a testament to the web's spirit of playfulness.

The group plans on tweeting, blogging, photo blogging and live streaming the event. If you'd like to plan your own wired road trip, here are a few tools that can help you get started:

SHARED TRAVEL PLANNING: Both Tripit and Dopplr are fantastic tools for keeping track of itineraries and sharing travel plans with friends. Meanwhile Gliider is a great tool for saving large blocks of trip-related text and syncing them to offline folders.

gliider from jared richardson on Vimeo.

DIRECTIONS: TeleNav provides GPS services for a number of mobile devices including the iPhone. The tool offers voice driving directions, spoken address recognition, rerouting for accidents and traffic jams, and locates wireless hotspots, the lowest gas prices, parking lots and ATMs. TomTom for iPhone is also expected to be a great tool as the docking station doubles as a charger.

FOOD: Many of us are familiar finding food with the Yelp and Urbanspoon iPhone apps; however, if you want an authentic road trip experience you might want to consult Roadfood. This site lays claim to the "most memorable local eateries along the highways and back roads of America." We get heart palpitations just looking at the heaping plates of pulled pork, burgers and ribs. Meanwhile, if you're looking to picnic with something more healthy and sustainable, Local Harvest's farmer's market finder coupled with the Locavore iPhone app offer users the chance to find local in-season produce. Locallectual offers a similar tool with their iLocavore app.

VIDEOS & PHOTOS: One way to get images up quickly is to stream them directly from your camera. Eye-Fi uses a wireless connection to upload photos and videos directly to your Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and Picassa accounts. If you want to live stream sans touch ups or editing, Eye-Fi is an extremely useful cordless solution. Other mobile streaming video and image options include Qik, Flixwagon, Stickam, Justin.tv and Kyte Producer.

GEO-TAGGING: AroundShare is a mobile application that allows users to publish photos to Google Maps. Meanwhile, Flickr's users can also organize their videos and photos on a map via the site's geo-tagging features. As for geo-based discovery, Flickr mobile utilizes the locational features of the Android and iPhone and allows members to explore public photos from nearby sites.

TRACKING:<http://www.google.com/latitude>Google Latitude lets users share their location on a map in real time from their phones or computers. Maps can be embedded in public websites and road trippers appear as moving dots on the map. Imagine your best friend surprising you with Thai food just as you pull up to your hotel. Services like Brightkite and Loopt also broadcast your location; however, these services are based on push notifications rather than real time tracking.

TELLING THE STORY: The Whuffaoke group is using Dipity to aggregate their media. The service allows users to upload their Tweets, blog posts and photo sets to a map, time line and flip book interface. The nice thing about this tool is that it can either be embedded (as seen here) or shared via Facebook, Delicious, StumbleUpon, Reddit or Digg. Other tools to aggregate road trip-related media include JS-Kit's Echo, Disqus or an embedded hashtag feed.

whuffaoke on Dipity.

Meanwhile, file-sharing has decreased significantly since the Digital Britain Report consultation to address illicit P2P file sharing. While music sharing sites have come and gone due to funding, legal issues and lack of users, here are some of the streaming sites that continue to thrive.

1. Grooveshark: Gainesville-based Grooveshark is best known as a site where both rights owners and uploaders were originally compensated for sharing. The online community offers WordPress integration, widgets and music sharing via Facebook.

2. Deezer: Deezer offers users free and legal streaming music while sharing advertising revenue with artists and rights owners. The site launched with a Sony BMG partnership and signed a Universal Music deal in 2008. Users can share their favorite music by connecting with friends within the social network, or embedding playlists in 3rd party sites.

3. Spotify: Heralded as one of the best music streaming experiences on the market, Spotify is only available in the UK, Sweden, Norway, Spain, France and Finland. TechDigest TV uploaded a fantastic looking preview of Spotify's much anticipated iPhone app.

4. Tunerec: Swedish company Tunerec allows users to create music libraries and playlists from recorded radio play. Because libraries are taken from recorded music, it takes a while to populate playlists; however, according to RWW's initial review by Frederic Lardinois, the service is worth the wait.

5. Last.FM: If you haven't heard of Last.FM, you've probably been living under a rock. The site offers users the ability to create radio stations and stream them complete with AudioScrobbler-powered recommendations.

6. Pandora: To the user, Pandora and Last.FM are similar recommendation-based radio services; however, where AudioScrobbler makes statistical inferences, Pandora's recommendations are determined by the Music Genome Project's 400 distinct musical characteristics.

7. Slacker: Slacker is another popular radio recommendation service. Users input tracks and receive recommendations. Slacker first launched with custom mobile hardware and has since expanded onto other mobile devices.

8. The Hype Machine: This is a fantastic service for those willing to leave music selection to the experts. Like other sites, this one allows listeners to search for music and stream playlists; however, the files on the site are actually streamed from the blogs of top labels, DJs, promoters and music start ups.

9. Blip.fm: Blip.fm is another site where music lovers can access millions of streaming songs. Members receive their own station and the ability to share station programming responsibilities with friends. The site also offers integration with blogs, Twitter, FriendFeed and Last.fm. The act of blipping refers to the act of linking to a song and attaching a 150 character comment to it.

10. MOG: MOG is a music blog network that encompasses more than 300 blog posts per week. The site offers an in-depth look at new artists and includes music recommendations, videos and streaming audio clips. A good place to start with this service is to play audio from it's Recently Popular Posts page.

11. Lala: Lala also offers users a playable web browser interface. The service contains 7 million free online songs and the ability to purchase additional web songs at 10 cents each or downloadable MP3's for 80 cents and up each.

12. Imeem: Imeem is considered "the new social mixtape". The streaming music site allows users to create playlists and share them across the web. RWW recently covered Imeem's iPhone and Android launch.

13. SoundCloud: SoundCloud also allows users to upload tracks and share them via the cloud. Listeners receive shared files via an email-style interface. From there, they can choose to either play the music from the site or download the tracks they've received from friends.

14. 8Tracks: This service lets users upload 8 tracks as a playlist and share the playlist with friends. This service is essentially what Muxtape used to be.

15. Muxtape: Muxtape has transformed from one of the early mixtape-style music sites (users uploaded and shared playlists) to a directory of bands. It remains a great place to discover indie bands.

16. Project Playlist: Project Playlist indexes music from across the web. Again, users create playlists and share links to music files with their friends. Reviewers see this as one of the best music search engines in existence.

17. Skreemr: Skreemr is also a search engine and music indexing site. It claims to offer users access to "6 million mp3 files from over 100,000 web sites".

18. Fizy: Similar to the now defunct Seeqpod, Fizy is an extremely bare bones approach to streaming music with a simple search bar. Like Seeqpod, the site offers speedy music video results and audio results, and unfortunately, legally questionable content. Perhaps the site's recent acquisition will change that.

On the Horizon: Microsoft is set to launch a streaming music site at the end of July. For more info on this project check out our coverage.
