Magento Open Source eCommerce Platform - Preview Version Released

Written by Richard MacManus / September 4, 2007 1:52 AM / 10 Comments

Varien, a Los Angeles web development firm, has just launched a preview version of its open source eCommerce platform called Magento. Also released was a community site and a demo store. Check out the screencasts, the first of which explains how to add a new product to your e-commerce catalog using Magento - see screenshots below.

This is Version 0.6 of Magneto and so it's an early beta release. As such, the company doesn't recommend it for use in production environments. Magento does however come with professional and community support. Along with the usual e-commerce features (product input, shopping cart, single-page checkout, etc), some other features of note are integration with 3rd party apps and product tagging.

Magento looks to be an easy to use and easily customizable open source e-commerce platform. There are sure to be many web developers and startups keen to try it out. If you've already given it a test drive, please leave a comment with your thoughts. For the others, here are some screenshots:

  1. I was expecting Magento for a long time.

Now, i can say it's a really user friendly solution to manage products and categories.

But i'm a lit bit disappointed with CMS feature.

It's quite difficult to install too.

But it's only a beta (near alpha) version, wait and see

  2. Wow, talk about some convoluted, keyword stuffed, URLs

I'm an SEO so I can appreciate using URLs without params, but good heavens, that one is just crazy.

  3. If only I had physical products to sell I'd be interested in this. Really.

  4. Funny how the "Nokia E65" looks exactly like the Sony Ericsson w810i with the branding stripped off.

  5. Jeremy, you can enter an "SEF URL Identifier" for any product. In the above example, you could make it:

  6. I have had a quick play around with the magento system, and its looking pretty good.

Nice OO design making it easy to build upon and a great user interface. Also with it being built using ZF there are endless possibilities in the future ( OpenID, Rest, Amazon etc etc )

I will be using this in the future, RIP osc & zen :)

  8. I teach e-commerce at a University in Saudi Arabia. I try my best to use/promote OSS in my classes. I have been talking about OSCommerce and CRELoaded for most for my e-commerce labs. After looking at the screen shots of Magento, I have to say I am 'really' impressed with its clean, web standard driven web design.
Not only does it 'look' amazing, I love the features. It is products like Magento OS E-Commerce and SugarCRM that keeps licensed software on their toes - (at least it should).

  10. The latest version is now available for download. The biggest highlight of the release is PayPal integration (view screencast) and multi-lingual support.

Magento supports two different PayPal methods for use in your websites and stores: PayPal Express, which allows the customer to check out from the PayPal site, and PayPal Direct, which offers credit card processing capability without the customer having to ever leave your store.
