Meta 2008 Web Trends
The excellent Trendsspotting blog has compiled a meta list of 2008 Web trends, by selecting "a group of 10 web/tech influencers suggesting their trends forecast for 2008." ReadWriteWeb is one of the 10 influencers selected - using our 10 Future Web Trends post as our contribution. It's very high level, but you can see that mobile, open, video, green, social, and networks are among the most popular tags.

I wonder whether Rich Internet Applications are such a good trend for the user. My basic problem with RIA other than Ajax is that I as a user loose the control I have over the browser today. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but AIR, Silverlight and friends make plugins such as GreaseMonkey impossible, don't they? Hiding data in an RIA application which is inaccessible by the browser in also makes the vision of Firefox as an information broker much harder.

Good observation, Carsten. I agree. The drift is clearly towards increased complexity in the content served up to browsers, if only because in-browser apps are so convenient. But we must ensure that open, transparent standards prevail. The browser belongs to the user and it must stay that way. This would be a good subject for an article.
Incidentally, I think congratulations are due to RWW for a run of really excellent, thought-provoking posts recently. Well done, and thanks.
