The next Mobile 2.0 Conference is happening in Europe, on July 4 in Barcelona, Spain. ReadWriteWeb is a media partner, because we support what Rudy De Waele and team are doing to promote the Mobile Web across the world. I myself attended the last event in San Francisco last October and learned a lot. We have 5 free tickets to the event to give away...
The Europe event brings together experts and thought leaders from all aspects of the mobile ecosystem, including startups, investors, mobile carriers, device manufacturers, and mobile application developers and web technologists. Check out the Mobile 2.0 blog for more details, including the full speaker list here.
The Mobile 2.0 Europe presenting start-ups will be selected in 3 Categories (Seed Capital Stage, Pre Series A and Post Series A). Any start-up company with a mobile application can participate. To apply and present your company and your application, you need to fill in the online application form. The deadline for submission is June 6, 2008 at midnight CET.
To be in to win one of the 5 free tickets RWW has available, please leave a comment below noting at least one mobile web startup you have your eye on - and why. Note that we are only providing the tickets, you need to make your own way to Barcelona :-).

I'm keeping an eye on http://trutap.com/ after hearing their CEO Doug Richard talking about them at http://www.thinkingdigital.co.uk last week.
Trutap looks like an interesting idea, and the idea was to ship over an exisiting idea from Japan to western markets and repackage it for use over here. An interesting way to approach a project and looking to see how it fairs.

Hi Richard,
I would like to have a ticket to the Mobile 2.0 Conference. Those are the startups I'm monitoring right now:
1) Aka-Aki. The first reason is patriotism. I'm from Germany and those guys are from Berlin. I met some of them, a great crew and a very nice product. An other reason is: It's not a copycat, like many startups in Germany. That's refreshing, because Aka-Aki is a rather nice mobile social community with great improvements over the last few month.
2) Brightkite. I've been talking with Sarah about them. They have a lot good features, a nice design and a great support for the iPhone. The best feature - at least from my perspective - is their privacy control. Not to many startups are thinking about this from the start.
There are a some other startups I'm taking a closer look at, but not as much as with the two I've mentioned right now.

www.hooqs.com (m.hooqs.com on mobile) - because it provides the internet video on mobile phones, dynamically and without dependency on a mobile client or one source of content

www.mobango.com because:
- it's an european start-up
- it makes easy to share digital content on mobile devices

Thanks all. Please also specifically note in your comments if you want a ticket.

As a Barcelona based interactive agency developing iPhone/Android apps for ourselves and for corporate/brand partners, I've got my eye on the start of a potential start-up, Comics on the iPhone.
Highly visual, text lite content is a great fit with mobile, huge in Asian markets and a media format that I believe will flourish on the mobile platform.
As a Barcelonista, I know where all the good bars are, with wireless of course and the finest tapas...

I'd like a ticket and am prepared to resurrect ole Gaudi to get it.

* Mobango
they're european, they have a strong business model and they are signing lots of partnerships to breaden their market
* Zyb
Ok, now it's part of Vodafone, but I think we have to keep one eye on this effort to make mobile social networking mainstream

I like the spmyigo software offered by bob mobile (www.bobmobile.de), a German company. You can track your friends and see if people with a similar profile is in your area. I think it would be a good start for a true mobile community that reaches out for the real world.
(And yes, I would love to get a ticket.)

Company to Keep an eye on Mxit (Http://www.mxit.co.za) they were one of the first mobile IM clients, Been available since late 2004, they understand the market and have +- 7 mill users right now. They also have customized the jabber protocol to make it more lightweight(thus lower mobile data costs). Unique service offerings like virtual goods etc.

Oh, yes i wouldnt mind some of those tickets :)

I would like to have a ticket for the Conference.
Those are the companies I'm monitoring now:
They offer a live streaming service using a mobile phone which allows you to video stream, record and interact with unlimited viewers. I'm using it and it's a really powerful social media service.
This is what I mean for context awareness :)
It's a web and mobile system that offers simple, yet powerful services for managing what you need to manage using browsers, mobile devices and so on.
Posted by: Andrea Massara | May 28, 2008 7:47 AM
I like Blyk, because I think that the ad supported model for subscriptions seems promising. The goal of reaching 16 - 24 year olds has resulted in ad response rates of 29%, which sounds just about incredible.

Although I think it's a stepping stone to a greater mobile web (one that isn't tied to the browser), I think SkyFire is providing a very important stepping stone for the time being. Anything that can level the playing field on mobile devices with the experience that you can get on a PC, I think, is crucial to moving the masses onto mobile devices.
And, I would eat my LG Chocolate if it meant getting tickets. Who do I have to beg?

I'd like a ticket and I've certainly got my eye on the mobile bookmarking portal startup PhoneFavs - http://pfavs.com
Posted by: Rynk | May 28, 2008 2:57 PM
Skyfire: the first real full browser
Qik: even if everything depends on the (creepy) network coverage and speed, the integration in the Twitter ecosystem is great
Soonr: first powerful remote access, back up, sharing tool. Productivity is enhanced in mobility
Loopt: pioneer in the socialmapping and rich LBS approach
Zkoot: full featured LBS social network. Very rich and needs some traction
Even If I don't win one of the tickets,I urge you to monitor those companies!!!!!

I'd love to go to the conference in Barcelona
I work in mobile user experience and I've been following:
www.Nimbuzz.com: A great IM client, that supports multiple protocols, GTalk,MSN,Yahoo messenger etc.
It imports your phone's address book, which you can then use to send email, start a chat or start an IP phonecall. This removes a significant barrier to use as you dont have to re enter all your contacts details to use it.
It has developed from a stand alone app to an intergrated approach which allows you to have it run in the background. This means you can start it and forget about it. If someone wants to contact you they can start to chat and the phone will alert you exactly the same way as you would for an sms message.
This approach is much more similar to the IM exprience on the desktop as it allows for more spontaneous communication with your friends, colleagues etc. as well as mirroring the experience of texting on mobiles.
It leverages the fact that the mobile is primarily a communications device and it allows the user to take their online modes of communication into a mobile context.
From a price perspective in countries where aggressive pricing for mobile broadband has been introduced it proivides a cheaper alternative to texting especially for a younger demographic that is price sensitive and accustomed to "always on" instant messaging.
Hope thats not to much of a rant !

Mobile startups that look promising:
* Textperts - A simple service where you text in a question and receive answer back from a human by sms. Mobile search that works.
* Flirtomatic - A mobile web dating service with incredible stats- average 8.8 page views/day/user.
* Jaiku - not sure they count as a startup anymore
* Twitter - As Jaiku, not sure if its a startup
* Shazam - Dial 2580 (uk) and hold your phone to the speaker and shazam identifies the song playing within 30 seconds and send you an sms with the song name and artist.
(interested in the ticket)
