MySpace Profile 2.0 Takes Visual Cues From Facebook

Written by Corvida / October 26, 2008 11:00 AM / 41 Comments

Earlier this month we asked if Facebook was becoming more like MySpace. We noted that there were new apps cropping up that were making Facebook look a lot more like MySpace. MySpace has started to open up alpha testing for its Profile 2.0 service. We caught a sneak peek and it seems that now MySpace is now taking a few visual cues from Facebook.

Accessing Profile 2.0

Profile 2.0 is going to make a lot of MySpace users unhappy, but only if they're truly happy with their current profile. We think anyone that's been waiting for Myspace to do some serious spring cleaning on how users can customize their profiles is going to love Profile 2.0. To access Profile 2.0:

  • Make sure you're not logged into MySpace
  • Head to MySpace Canada
  • Login to your MySpace account as you normally would

You should now see a small yellow box at the top of your MySpace homepage inviting you to try out the Alpha of Profile 2.0.

What MySpace Should've Looked Like in the Beginning

Profile 2.0 allows for users to customize a lot more of their profile than words. Users can now drag and drop modules, add and remove modules, change themes, privacy settings, profile layouts and more. The advance edit mode allows those with more advanced HTML knowledge to fill out their profile with custom CSS and offers more control over module styles. You are also presented with a visual preview of every change made.

Rearranging My Space

All in all, the new Profile 2.0 will be a great tool to use once it goes public. However those that are already using custom templates from the thousands of sites that offer free MySpace themes may be at a loss until web designers catch up. Profile 2.0 will break most of the custom MySpace themes available. If you choose to try out Profile 2.0 MySpace reserves your 1.0 profile just in case you don't like what you see in Profile 2.0. In any case, back up your current profile settings before trying out Profile 2.0.

  1. The picture reminds me of my flirtation with Uber.com a lot more than it does with Facebook.

  2. Myspace is like a younger sibling trying to copy it's older sibling. First Myspace tries to copy Facebook's apps, now they are doing this? Major fail, Myspace, and I like you. *sigh*

  4. It's ok
except that when I changed everything and made it super awesome I don't know why the changes didn't work and now I am with a super ugly white and blue theme. :$

  5. Hmmm… Myspace won't let me try the new Profile 2.0 stuff; keep getting an error message when I try. Anyone else?

  7. I am working on compiling a good bit of information for professional designers interested in the changes that have been made in the process as far as design standards, on my site (click above, I didn't have the heart to spam in the post :D)

Still hoping for some additions, like @import support.

  9. is this going to apply to all myspace profiles...including musician pages?

  10. I've tried the 2.0 and it's really cool. You have to create a new profile style, but its worth it. The new page lets you hide your comments, which I've always wanted to do! Don't like snoopers on my page!

  20. -_-

it totally messed up my profile!

it took me so long to even get it to how i wanted.

    i'm unhappy with 2.0 because i can't fix it!
i made my own layout, fonts everythig.
link buttons and links to friends pages.

now i don't even know how to take it off.
im actually really really upset because people like me,
who do make their own things.
will be utterly dissappointed when they can't get it back.

i'm not waiting 90 days for it to restore!! no way

i wrote every single code, and i'm really annoyed.
someone please help me get it off?

    x

    Posted by: Amanda | November 14, 2008 12:29 AM

  29. When on myspace, click on edit profile, and then in the upper right hand corner click on customize, then in the upper right hand corner there should be a button that says "Go back". click on that. and then it will ask if your sure. and then click on "go back to 1.0". that will take you back to the old myspace.

And if everyone saw my new personal MySpace page they will see the potential it has, especially, for linking to products within your main website. 34. These comments illustrate the major problem with MySpace: users who use it but don't know what they are doing and cause problems themselves.
If you look around the page you can clearly see how to change back to Profile 1.0 after experimenting with Profile 2.0. Switching to 2.0 is not permanent.

    Posted by: jessica | November 21, 2008 10:58 PM

  40. If myspace will transfer all my custom photos I would be glad to switch over. I made my own profile and It took all day to make it reflect my personal tastes. Hope a transfer profile theme option will be available someday cause thats the only way I'd switch over. Switching back to 1.0 is easier than U might think though. Just follow instructions on #22 above!! Still don't want to risk losing my current layout....
