Yesterday we noted the launch of a new Nasdaq stock market index tracking only Internet companies, called the NASDAQ Internet Index. The index (^QNET) will track a diverse range of companies covering "Internet access providers, Internet search engines, web hosting, website design, and Internet retail commerce."
The list is now available (thanks TraderMike). The leading companies include Google, Yahoo, eBay, Amazon, IAC/InterActiveCorp. It also includes international companies, like Baidu and Sohu from China.
As Josh noted earlier today though, curiously absent are sites like Microsoft and News Corp. - who control some of the most popular properties on the Internet (MSN/Live and MySpace/FIM respectively). These companies many not be only Internet companies, but their impact on the web is undeniably enormous. Are there any other public Internet companies missing who you think should be there? >>"...curiously absent are sites like Microsoft and News Corp."
Yeah, that's odd isn't it?! Especially Newscorp (I think Microsoft are seen less as an Internet company though).
It is an interesting list and a very real testament to how far Internet companies have come since...well, since the 'dot com crash'. I just hope this doesn't add further fuel to the suspicion there might be another crash at some point soon (as discussed recently on my site).

Cisco Systems should be on there - as they manage all traffic and have many products for the internet, not just the WWW - especially with their new collaboration technologies.

@1 Very true about how far internet companies have come.
The omissions though are rather striking. Can't imagine what yardstick would have kept them out.

maybe they had to ask permission first?

From Tech Tracks:
I called Nasdaq to ask why Microsoft was not included. Spokesman Wayne Lee said:
"If you use most industry classification codes, Microsoft is generally classified as a software company, not an Internet one, so, we refer to various sources when determining which companies are indeed Internet and subsequently eligible for inclusion in the Internet Index."

Given NASDAQ Spokesman Wayne Lee's comment, I wonder how Vignette, Interwoven and Opentext are not software companies; but classified as Internet companies.

It’ll be interesting to see what other internet juggernauts make up this list - along with who makes up the bottom tier as well. Should be fun to keep an eye on though. Thanks.
