New Tweetdeck Out Tomorrow, Here's What It Will Include

Written by Marshall Kirkpatrick / February 11, 2009 5:35 PM / 69 Comments

TweetDecklogo150.jpgWe got our hands on the new version of popular Twitter desktop app Tweetdeck that will be delivered to all users tomorrow and we're pretty excited about what's been added.

If you've never used Tweetdeck, it's the most powerful application available for sending and receiving Twitter messages. It's about to become even more awesome.

Tweetdeck includes support for groups, for columns of persistent search results and a number of cool third party services are integrated right inside the interface. What's coming next? Language translation, StockTwits integration, forwarding by email, switching to one column view and extensive support for conversation topics by hashtag. It's quite an impressive upgrade for an already very feature-rich application.

Part of my Tweetdeck set-up, click to view full size.

Language translation is now available in the drop down "more actions" menu inside every user profile next to a tweet. It's a pretty rough translation, as these things always are - but how cool is that anyway? Twitter is a very international phenomenon - now we can grunt at each other across languages a little more effectively.

tweetdecktranslate.jpgStocktwits is a fast-growing startup that hosts conversation and news tracking around the stock market. Now Tweetdeck will let you tie in your Stocktwits account and create Friends, Portfolio, Recommended, Commentary and "all" columns. We expect that to be quite popular.

Hashtag Support comes in the form of a new drop down to the right of your message composition window, displaying one-click links to add any of your 10 most recently used hashtags. When you reply to a message that included a hashtag - that same hashtag will be automatically appended to your reply. That's going to keep conversations much more coherent.

User Search lets you set up a column to search for any username - see what people are saying to and about people of interest.

One Column View is a quick little button you can hit to zip your full screen Tweetdeck down into just one column, the easier to watch it next to a browser with. Click it again and it will expand to full size.

There are a number of other new additions, from easier group management to email forwarding of tweets to some API access improvements. There may be some changes users don't like, as well.

All we can say for now, having just used it for a little while, is that the most powerful Twitter interface available is not slowing down - it just keeps getting better.

  1. Excellent Marshall! Was just thinking today that it would be great to have a search function. Nice Lincoln's birthday present to Twitterville.

  2. Great to hear that Tweetdeck is updated but have they fixed it's 2 main issues:

    - CPU Resource Hog
    - Continually crashes Adobe Air app and sometimes computer itself

    Posted by: Matt | February 11, 2009 6:21 PM

  3. Matt - the CPU issue is a common one for AIR apps I think, but agreed, that would be very good. Re crashing, I've found that not having too many search columns, especially ones that deliver a whole lot of results, open all at once - has helped me.

  4. I can't wait. Tweetdeck is by far the best twitter app ever!

  5. Question, Marshall... why not mention that we already covered this story more than three hours earlier?

TweetDeck to Add Translations, Tweets by E-mail, StockTwits
    http://www.louisgray.com/live/2009/02/tweetdeck-to-add-translations-tweets-by.html

I assume you saw that, and I also assume you don't expect I am aiming to take down RWW?

  6. I'm a big fan of Tweetdeck and these sound like great updates (though I'd mention that my preferred micro-blogging service http://www.CitySpeek.com implemented translation a few weeks ago).

I think what is really interesting here is all that Tweetdeck is doing that Twitter isn't. At what point does Tweetdeck take their tools and go home, as to say start their own micro-blogging platform? I know it sounds crazy, but stop and think about what Twitter offers that Tweetdeck can't do on their own.

Props to Tweetdeck, they keep doing things right. I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

  7. Awesome - looking forward to it.

  8. Yup.

  9. Louis - I didn't mention it because it is actually *my goal* to take down LouisGray.com! I kid, I kid - dude, I was just on the phone all day and did not see that you had posted on this yet. No conspiracy. Will go read your post - good job getting to it first, apparently.

  10. Marshall, no harm no foul. I just referred a new startup in alpha to RWW as a trusted site, and hope to continue to do so. I just want to keep you in the "good guys" corner.

Posted by: Louis Gray | February 11, 2009 6:42 PM

  11. Very cool. TweetDeck is our app of choice for Twitter.

Have they added the ability to login to multiple accounts like Twhirl has? That's the one glaring omission of TweetDeck.

    Posted by: GrubHub | February 11, 2009 6:45 PM

  12. This is all great .. but the one feature I want is the ability to block someone ... twhirl has it, why can't TD?

    Posted by: Jo | February 11, 2009 6:49 PM

  13. Don't blame AIR for being a resource hog. You can make good performing and optimized apps with AIR.

Posted by: Phillip Kerman | February 11, 2009 7:26 PM

  14. I really hope that it works. Mine hasn't worked for the past week and a half. I hope they include spell check too. That is a bonus for Twirl and the multiple accounts is too.

Posted by: Jamie Favreau | February 11, 2009 7:29 PM

  15. Strange, I guess, that I haven't had any problem with it crashing even though I use it on two separate computers. Maybe I don't push it hard enough. ;)

Posted by: Carl Pruitt | February 11, 2009 7:55 PM

  16. The biggest problem I've had is with TweetDeck randomly crashing. Luckily it's not a messy crash and comes back quickly. I'm glad to see there will be additional search functionality, as that was another feature that was lacking.

Posted by: Ben LaMothe | February 11, 2009 8:01 PM

  17. Oooh, that's nice, will wait till tomorrow for the update. :)

    Posted by: WPCult | February 11, 2009 8:05 PM

  18. No multiple accounts, no can do. I'll stick to bouncing around Splitweet and Twhirl until they get it right. Too bad. :-(

    Posted by: Ron | February 11, 2009 8:05 PM

  19. I wanted badly to read about the new features coming to TweetDeck, but I guess I'll have to wait until it arrives as I just couldn't get past your Wired Magazine inspired color settings in your screen shots. ;)

    Posted by: maczter | February 11, 2009 8:11 PM

  20. I am READY!
    :-)

Posted by: Callie Sinkinson | February 11, 2009 8:19 PM

  21. I have had trouble with TD being not a CPU hog, but a RAM hog. I've seen many times when I look in the Task manager that it's using by far more RAM than any other app, bordering on 500-600MB, and I have to close it and re-start it. Hope they address that.

Also, TD already has Single Column view in version .21b, so that's nothing new, unless they've improved it somehow. Anyway, I'll be upgrading ASAP tomorrow!

  22. Looking forward to greater maneuverability in the re-designed TweetDeck. Should be fun.

  23. Can't wait! We love tweetdeck.

Posted by: Holly Powell | February 11, 2009 8:46 PM

  24. Stocktwits integration? I'm sold. Goodbye Twhirl.

    Posted by: Cheyne | February 11, 2009 8:46 PM

  25. The thing most people, including me, want from Tweetdeck is support for multiple accounts. I'm disappointed that it's not mentioned in your list of updates.

Posted by: Ken Shane | February 11, 2009 8:47 PM

  26. If I were a stocktwits user, this would be great. I'm not. I do like less resource demand, and persistent groups would be neat. I can haz, please?

  27. That is the most garish purple I have ever seen.

I think maybe it makes your beard extremely robust.

  28. thanks for the update!! can't wait to try it out!

Posted by: Winston Salem Real Estate | February 11, 2009 8:59 PM

  29. Can't say I'm excited about these features, but I'm glad to see it improve.

Posted by: Bwana Posted on FriendFeed   | February 11, 2009 9:01 PM

  30. *yawn* Give me a call when it finally displays Japanese characters properly. It is otherwise unusable for me. >_

    Posted by: Enrico | February 11, 2009 9:03 PM

  31. OMG MY EYES. Whats up with purple on purple?

Posted by: Glenn Batuyong Posted on FriendFeed   | February 11, 2009 9:09 PM

  32. Wow, this should be good, i have only been using tweetdeck for about a week, but pretty much as soon as i started i preferred it to the web site. For a program that is at version 0.21 (and what it goes to with this release) it is very feature rich, just imagine what V1.0 will be like when they get there.

Posted by: No Fixed Office | February 11, 2009 9:09 PM

  33. I like TD, but without multiple account support it's a no-no. I'll stick with Twhirl.

    Posted by: Nigel | February 11, 2009 9:10 PM

  34. So, twhirl just updated that when you type shift i space, that it actually behaves like that, tweetdeck fixes this too?

    Posted by: Floris | February 11, 2009 9:25 PM

  35. I loved Tweetdeck - for about two weeks. Then it crashed and hasn't worked since. Very sad because it is a great, or was a great app. I hope this one works. Is there some problem with it working on a Mac? Looking forward to trying this out.

Posted by: Becky Blanton | February 11, 2009 9:55 PM

  36. Why no support for multiple accounts. Now, because I manage 3 separate accounts, 2 for businesses and then my personal, I still have to use Twhirl to make life a bit easier. I still have TweetDeck up for my primary account, but still, howhard can it be?

    Make it happen.

    Posted by: Mike | February 11, 2009 10:59 PM

  37. all i wanted was support for multiple accounts. without it i have to keep using fugly twhirl. ewwww

Posted by: Baratunde Thurston Posted on FriendFeed   | February 11, 2009 11:03 PM

  38. Tweetdeck is definitely the most powerful Twitter app around and these are wonderful new features. The only problem I have with it, as it's been mentioned before - above -, is that it lacks support for multiple accounts. I use separate accounts to twitter in 2 different languages, so until it supports that, I have to stick with other apps that already do that - like Twhirl.

Hopefully this will be included in the next upgrade. :)

  39. too bad it looks ugly as hell

    Posted by: Meh | February 11, 2009 11:21 PM

  40. My Tweetdeck is rock solid on my Macbook Pro.

Are people who are having problems with it crashing a lot using PCs by any chance?

Btw my Vista laptop has died today - all I can say is.. hooray!

Posted by: James Watson | February 12, 2009 1:02 AM

  41. The performance issues with Tweetdeck are an inherent part of AIR / Flex applications. It's essentially down to Adobe to sort it out.

It's also part of the reason why Tweetdeck isn't the best looking application since in practice it is possible to have very good looking Air applications but they do suck up a lot of system resources over time, which is not great for an app that you always want to run in the background.

Once Adobe tackles the problem (which it seems to be ignoring) in a future Air release then the performance of apps such as Tweetdeck will improve considerably.

  42. It's tomorrow. I don't see it up on Tweetdeck's site?

Oh and my wife thinks the guy at the top @cote, looks like once-blind rich, not rich, rich again Carlos from Desperate Housewives; Gabriella's husband. I have no clue what she's talking about.

    NEW TWEETDECK ALREADY!

  45. Tweetdeck is still missing a great feature that other clients have - FriendFeed support.

    Posted by: Oren | February 12, 2009 2:20 AM

  46. I'm hoping a little help with the issues, like maybe a help file that you can find easily - with a few of the basic troubleshooting tips.

  47. Good to see new features in TweetDeck.
Hope you'll add multiple accounts support, soon.

    Posted by: DJ | February 12, 2009 2:42 AM

  48. @tweetdeck : RTmyself (@jacopogio) DAY2: anyway to keep groups and searches on 2 different pc with same username ? Thanks in advance ;-)

    Posted by: JacopoGio | February 12, 2009 2:47 AM

  49. Gaah, still no multiple account function?!

Come on Tweetdeck, you've know for ages that people really want this.

    Posted by: Luke | February 12, 2009 2:55 AM

  50. "...One Column View is a quick little button you can hit to zip your full screen Tweetdeck down into just one column, the easier to watch it next to a browser with. Click it again and it will expand to full size."

I already have that, been there for awhile. WTF?
