Pingle Brings Ping.fm to the iPhone

Written by Lidija Davis / February 21, 2009 10:40 AM / 8 Comments

pingle_jan_09.jpgCurious Squid has released Pingle, an application for the iPhone which lets you update your status across a selection of social networks at once. Using Ping.fm, Pingle will update Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Flickr, FriendFeed, Delicious, Tumblr, and more including many blogging platforms.

The app works on both the original 1G iPhone and the 3G iPhone, and is available in the iPhone App Store for $1.99

Pingle Features

  • Simple, comfortable user interface
  • Camera and photo library integration
  • All features supported in portrait or landscape orientation (for wide keyboard fans)
  • View and repost from a history of your previous pings
  • Easy location integration with location privacy controls ("fuzzing")
  • Google Maps based viewer to see and modify your posted location

Pingle Limitations

As Zee points out on the The Next Web, the only problem with Pingle is if you're in an area that has no reception, there is no way to save an update for posting until you do get reception.

"I'm likely stick to using Mail until Pingle integrate one feature "Outbox". Using Mail, should I not have access to the web, the app will automatically save any emails (updates) in the outbox until there's sufficient a connection for the email to be sent."

Perhaps that will be in the next version. Until then, if you give it a try, let us know what you think.

  1. Thanks for the mention! The "offline outbox" concept will definitely be in the next release of Pingle, which I hope to finish in a couple of weeks.

  3. But Ping offers this for free and it works great. I not only use the ping.fm iphone app but I use the email portion to update my ping account 10-50 times a day which then of course updates all my social media networks. It is not an expensive app but it seems redundant.

  4. Yes, but, the Ping.fm webapp is free--why would I spend $2.00 on something I can get for free?

  5. Did someone just say "just try it" and then ask for $1.99?

    Really?

    Wow.

  6. There are definitely free ways to update Ping.FM from the iPhone. But none of them provided all the features that I wanted: either you couldn't post photos (the webapp), or you couldn't automatically include your GPS coordinates (webapp and email), or you couldn't easily see and pick from your preconfigured triggers (email), or list/edit/repost your previous pings, etc.

The Ping.FM guys have built a great product that will stand on its own for some people. That's why I haven't done a free Pingle Lite.

But some people will benefit from having all these features in one place in a program that doesn't require you to remember the Ping.FM syntax. For those who think it's worth a little money, this is one more choice than they had before.

  8. Pingle blows the Ping.fm web app away, which is what it should do as it has full use of the iPhone SDK and Ping.fm API. It's well worth the price and more.
