Poll: Which Blog Search Engine Do You Use?

Written by Josh Catone / June 13, 2008 10:05 AM / 15 Comments

paidContent is reporting that Technorati has raised $7.5 million of planned $10 million fourth round of funding. That would bring the total amount raised by the blog search engine to about $30 million. Google Blog Search has greatly eaten into Technorati's share of the blog search market, and the company changed CEOs last August. We documented the company's struggles last year, but now we'd like to ask you if Technorati is still relevant. What blog search engine do you use?

For my part, I use a mixture of Google Blog Search and Technorati. In my opinion, Technorati tends to be better at finding recent blog posts, and the organization of results makes it easier to find things most recently written. Plus, their blog weighting helps when you want to find posts specifically written by known voices in the online community. Google, on the other hand, offers the convenience of being able to almost seamlessly switch between blog, web, and news search -- something that can be very helpful when researching a post.

Vote in our poll below and let us know your thoughts about Technorati's relevance in the comments below.

  1. Technorati when I actually use a blog search engine. I also use Digg to find better quality results.

I look at Technorati as 'insta-search' -- for late breaking news.

  6. I have found very different results between Technorati and Google Blog search, with the latter being much more up to date and accurate/all inclusive of search results. I haven't tried the other services but will check them out. Thanks!

  7. Wow, the headline made me come over here to vote for Lijit! Guess I misunderstood the question.

Technorati still has relevance, I think, even though I usually go to Google because of the things you mentioned in the post. I use Technorati when I want to find historically popular sites, usually to compare to results found through Google.

And I use LIJIT on my blog. (So there.)

  11. I don't understand why anyone would use a blog search engine, Google can find you practically anything and to me it doesn't matter where I find the information I'm looking for as long as I find it.

  12. I am among those who don't use a blog search engine. If I'm looking for something, I rarely care whether it's on a blog.

On a related note, the boundaries of Blogistan are fuzzy, and getting fuzzier. Bloggers at NY Times, Guardian, Business Week, WSJ, etc. are Goliath's gang, rather than the David-like diarists of traditional blogging.

And what about microblogging services, like Tumblr and Twitter. Are they part of Blogistan? My own answers are "yes" and "no" respectively, but others will draw the boundary differently.

  13. blogs.yandex.ru and livejournal.ru are the key places to search through Russian blogs - and they are really popular

I guess how big is this local non-English segment of blog search worldwide? It should be quite big
