Producteev: Social Task Management for Small Groups

Written by Frederic Lardinois / September 2, 2009 12:31 PM / 26 Comments

producteev_logo_sep09.jpgProducteev is a very well-designed online task management and collaboration service for individuals and small groups. Producteev started out as a task management system, but today, the company is adding a number of interesting collaboration features as well. If Producteev only offered yet anther task management service, this wouldn't be a very exciting product (how many online task managers do we really need, after all?). What makes Producteev stand out is that it is nicely integrated with Twitter, Facebook, and a large number of online productivity apps. The company also offers mobile apps for virtually every popular platform. We are giving away 10 pro accounts for Producteev. Read on to find out how you can get yours.

Crowdsourcing Tasks on Twitter and Facebook

As the company's founder and CEO Ilan Abehassera told us earlier today, Producteev wants to be a "multichannel group productivity application" that goes far beyond simple task management for groups. The most interesting new feature Producteev launched today is the ability to "crowdsource tasks." This features allows users to make some of their tasks public and publish them to their Twitter or Facebook feeds. These messages will then include a shortened link back to Producteev, where your friends, colleagues, and random followers can provide you with answers or ideas (after identifying themselves through Facebook Connect or Twitter Connect). Basically, this feature allows you to manage all the answers you would usually get as @replies on Twitter, for example.

FriendFeed for Productivity Apps

Producteev also offers what it calls a "FriendFeed for your productivity apps." The service can aggregate the activity from team members on Zoho, Google Reader, Docstoc, GitHub, SlideShare, and others. The company will continue to add support for other services, including Google Docs, in the near future. If a team member uploads a new document to Zoho, for example, a notification will appear in the other team members' Producteev real-time live feed, which is available on the site and in the mobile and desktop apps. This feed was clearly modeled after the Facebook news feed - down to the notifications icon in the bottom right corner of the window. Just like in FriendFeed and Facebook, users can 'like' status updates and comment on them.

In addition, of course, Producteev also offers all the standard task management features one would expect from a modern task management applicaiton, including the ability to delegate tasks to other team members. Users can also upload files and Producteev offers a basic revision system for these files as well. Another nice feature is that users can add new tasks by sending a DM to Producteev's Twitter account or by sending an email to Producteev.

These social features also set Producteev apart from some if its competitors, including Basecamp. It is also important to note that Producteev offers apps for a wide range of mobile phones, including the iPhone (iTunes link), Android, Windows Mobile, and Nokia S60 phones. In addition, there is also a cross-platform Adobe Air app and a Blackberry client will be released within the next couple of days.

Pricing

Producteev offers 7 different account types, ranging from free trial accounts with three users and 10MB of storage ($5/month after the free trial) all the way up to the Gold business account ($99/month) for up to 100 users and 1GB of storage. There are three different tiers of business accounts (Bronze, Silver, Gold), all of which feature customizable dashboards, sync with Outlook and iCal, as well as priority support by email.

producteev_main_dashboard.pngThere is also a free account for students, with support for up to 40 users. According to Ilan Abehassera, Producteev's founder and CEO, the educational market is clearly on the company's radar and Producteev is working on a number of deals that would provide a white-label version of its service to universities and colleges.

  5. Hi, I'm setting up a new small studio and I was just looking for the best project management tool to implement. I was set on Basecamp until I read about Producteev. Seems a good idea and would love to get a Gold account to save some pennies on these starting-up times.

  9. I've been researching the various products similar to Producteev for the past couple of months. It's exhausting. I really want to be done now. I checked out Producteev and think that it would work for us (Instructional Design & Development team at an online university). I would be most appreciative if we could try the pro version. I am sure my productivity would soar, our projects would sail, and our teams would surf with ease. Please?

  10. I work for a startup real estate company in Florida. No one knows how to plug a PC in, but I now have us using Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Docs... basically bringing them into 2009. I am starting to integrate Twitter and Facebook accounts into our business model, and we're opening a new office this year. If I could further that integration with task management...

  12. As a graduate student in Educational Technology, we are presently researching ways to transform traditional education platforms (including traditional distance learning paradigms) by integrating Web2.0 tools such as Producteev.

If I were awarded a Gold Account, I would implement the use of Producteev into my courses at NAU and rigorously test the application's usefulness as part of a PLE (Personal Learning Environment).

  13. I have been beta testing Taskio (http://www.taskio.com/), my friends at Boxador got me an account, this whole social media integration with task management is going to be a very hot topic in the next few months. We just need to make sure that we are not breaking confidentiality exposing internal company business to the outside world. Taskio has an interesting twist on dealing with such barriers, I wonder how producteev deals with such issues.

  14. I would use it to stay tune with my work, because I have to tell the kids of the radio broadcast all the task they have to take all the time. I need something more than just remeber via e-mail their tasks.
I need a super project management tool to implement. I would prefer some color like...gold?

  15. Hi - I am a college instructor in Human Resources Technology and a big part of my class is educating current and future HR leaders on the tools and technologies that can empower the workforce, connect individuals, and drive innovation. I would love to try Producteev in a class project, perhaps one were my class could work with a local company to assist them in their employee collaboration initiatives.

  16. Hi I like many others have beem looking for a tool that offers some real productivity in the task mangement and collaborative space. The current ones I have tried all seem to miss something. My interest is personal for my own tracking of projects but also to try and find an easy to use feature packed application that i can trial and then deploy across small non government organisations(foundations) within asia. These groups would gain exponiantially from the use of a good task tracking and collaborative tool.

  18. I would love to give it a try. I work in a small (12 people) IT shop at a university. We have a huge span of things we are responsible for and tracking hardware and software maintenance, new and on-going projects, and training is complex. Producteev seems like it would be great way to track the work.

  19. Part of my job as Web Program Manager for a large energy utility is supporting our social media strategy to enhance communication channels for our customers and stakeholders. In this case, I'm researching productivity tools. We have developed a strong monitoring process to listen, identify and engage in customer and stakeholder conversations, using a suite of online tools including Google Reader, Google Blog Search, Technorati, BackType, TweetBeep, etc. We've launched a Twitter account @PSETalk and a blog on Google's Blogger platform at http://AskAndy.pse.com. We have a monitoring team collaborating with PR professionals authoring tweets and blog posts. We're also pursuing collaboration in these endeavors with our Corporate Affairs and Customer Services departments. Your post about Producteev interested me in trying out this tool and has also helped me articulate our list of business requirements for this kind of application. A free Gold account at Producteev would go a long way in optimizing our budget and technical resources in this area. Thanks for the information!

  23. Hi,

As the Information Technology manager of a college house with over 800 students at UPenn and a student and an entrepreneur (www.fizzysoftware.com) managing a bunch of different offshore development teams I think this product could be very useful to collaborate with everyone who uses a different form of communication.

    Posted by: Sudhanshu | September 3, 2009 12:19 PM

  24. I would like to use it to use the knowledge of my crowd in a loose fashion. That's why aggregation and Twitter integration etc are so important. To collect and share knowledge and creativity.

  25. It would be a nice birthday gift for me. And also the fact that you have 100 giveaways and only 24 comments yet. SO I get one. :-)

  26. Firstly, thanks for the opportunity given to the readers to earn themselves a producteev gold a/c. Without clicking on the link, i wouldn't have chance upon such a awesome tool. It served as a platform for ALL our connectivity and productivity needs. It has bring "work" and "social" together, capitalizing the potential of social media, to maximize productivity on work. I can also sense the element of "Fun" within this platform. This definitely will revolutionize how productivity work can be organised.

Being a manager, i'm definitely going to fall in love with this. On the other hand, i believe the "team members" is not going to enjoy it.... why? cos they know that their tasks are more closely monitored by their bosses ..... therefore, for those who going to try this, pls implement with care, especial how your team members feels about it. A "Change Management Plan" may be required.

I'm a manager in a SME, managing a group of 4 engineers. We deal with projects for the company and such tools going ease our burden alot. IT supports for productivity tools is definitely not on the priority list of the company. Hence, we have used more 1G method of keeping track of tasking. I hope we are earn this chance to go 3G.

    Would appreciate if i'm selected.

    thanks
