SocialToo Launches New Tools to Fight Twitter DM Spam

Written by Frederic Lardinois / September 4, 2009 11:59 AM / 15 Comments

socialtoo_logo_sep09.pngSocialToo just announced a number of new features that will allow Twitter users to fight the increasing amount of direct messaging (DM) spam, which is becoming a major hassle on Twitter. SocialToo can now replace the default email messages that Twitter normally sends out when a user receives a DM with a customized email from SocialToo itself. These emails will allow users to immediately flag another user as a spammer and block any further messages from their account. In addition, SocialToo is also launching its own spam filter, with which users can block DMs based on a user-defined list of keywords and phrases like "get 500 new followers a day" or "make money."

All of these services will be available for free.

Both the DM email service and the keyword-based spam-blocking feature look like excellent ideas. In addition to blocking spammers to your account, SocialToo will also alert Twitter's @spam account whenever you block somebody and flag them as a spammer (TweetDeck, we should note, offers a similar feature).

Fighting Twitter Spam

SocialToo, of course, was responsible for quite a few of these spam messages in the early days of Twitter; though this February, SocialToo's CEO Jesse Stay announced that the service would end support for auto DMs, and SocialToo had been already offering some basic tools to fight auto-following spammers. Others have now jumped into this market, and the problem is getting more pronounced by the day. Of course, the problem of Twitter spam in general is getting worse, too, and we are still waiting for a good third-party solution to filter spam messages in our regular Twitter stream or for Twitter to put its foot down and implement better spam filters itself.

  1. Nicely done. I'll be sure to be adding the words 'mafia' to mine. ;)

Now, if only Jesse could figure out a way to do this in our open streams, too. Then he'd really have something magical.

  4. Sheamus, feel free to ask your preferred Twitter client to contact us. I'd love to put some of the filtering we're already doing in the hands of those Twitter clients. I have an API I'm willing to expose, but want to hear from individual developers ways they would want to use it before we fully expand it.

    Thanks for sharing this, Frederic!

  5. The single biggest way to stop DM spam on Twitter is not with ex post facto tools like this, but by altering the mindset that it's good and/or polite to follow back anyone who follows you. That's what leads to DMs, that's what encourages spam and porn and everything else. Otherwise, no one would see such things except those who want to. I remain puzzled as to why people don't understand that Twitter is meant to be asymmetrical in nature: follow only the people who are interesting to you.

By the way, "positive match" is misspelled in the screen shot.

  6. Hi, please let be less enthusiast about this new possibilities on SocialToo...

Because I lost more than 7 000 "following" as a SocialToo paid account 3 hours ago because I quote Jesse Stay (SocialToo) :

"there was a bug in our dm filter code that we've fixed."

At this moment, i wait for a compensation from this company for the loss. Will see if SocialToo is professional or not.

I do add there is no information or update about this bug and consequences for SocialToo users on SocialToo blog.

  7. Jean-Luc, as I mentioned in our conversations via e-mail, your issue was not caused by a bug, but rather because you checked the box, "unfollow those that unfollow you". I'm happy to keep discussing this via e-mail if you think that is not the case.

  8. Strange Jesse because you don't tell me the same version by email.

    1) when i revoke your app, my following account has stopped to decrease... So sorry but you can't deny it's not because SocialToo.
    you also wrote me:
"there was a bug in our dm filter code that we've fixed."

    2) i haven't change this box checked since i'm on SocialToo (paid account) and i've never experimented such a sudden decrease before

    3) in your last message, you tell it's Twitter fault.

    4) you want to give me a compensation. that's nice.

But please don't transform me what you say in email messages simply because here you want to publicize / do some PR for SocialToo...

We are in the age of transparency.
    Bugs can arrive.
The best way is also to recognize it.

  9. Most people have not figured out social networking or at least how it works or how they can benefit from it.

A group of sharp entrepreneurs have figured out an ingenious way to monetize social networking in less
    than 15 minutes.

    See how they did it.....

  10. This is definitely something that is needed. Spam on Twitter is getting out of hand. Its sad that people abuse this sort of stuff looking for a quick dollar, but if they took more of a business approach to these types of apps, they could make a lot more money in the long run by using the application correctly.

So many people think you have to spam people again and again to make money on the internet, but if they would just start building real relationships then they would actually earn more in the long run.

  11. Spam on twitter is getting out of hand. I'm glad that a solution is there. Really need it.

Like Bruce said, you dont need to spam to make money. Take care of your followers and you'll have them for life, spam them and they'll run.

  15. @Jean-Luc

You know by now that Jesse Stay is one of the most dishonest and deceitful monkey coders out there. His web of lies and his unethical practices are strewn all over the net.

Jennifer Leggio does a good job here exposing his false claims about a mickey mouse anti-virus solution at SocialToo: http://bit.ly/5I6w44

I recommend you help spread the word about SocialToo as buggy software that isn't worth the money. Even when free - it does more harm than good. Plus, the "CEO" Jesse Stay cannot be trusted.
