At Last! Streaming Media App Orb Launches Mac Version

We had almost forgotten about Orb, the media-sharing software that lets you stream video from your home computer to your iPhone or any other internet-connected device. In fact, the last time we had even looked at the application was November of 2008 when the company announced an update to their iPhone application which allowed you to stream live TV over the 3G network. At that time though, the desktop software portion of the Orb product was PC-only. As in Windows PC-only. Today, that has changed. Orb for Macintosh has finally been released so Mac OS X users can now stream their media over the net, too.

Sponsor

Orb is a desktop software program that facilitates streaming of personal media over the internet. Once installed and configured, you can access your home computer's content library from any internet-connected device. The software easily achieves what many other technology companies are still figuring out how to do - make your media available anywhere and everywhere on any device you use with minimal effort on your part.

One of Orb's best features is the OrbLive iPhone application which connects with your home computer over the internet to provide access to your media library of audio, video, and photos. Through the mobile application, you can access any of your media files and play stream them over either a Wi-Fi or 3G connection. In the Windows version of the software, PC's with TV tuner cards can also connect you to live, streaming TV in addition to the other shared media saved on the PC's hard drive.

To some extent, Orb competes with Apple's own offerings since it provides access to music and video from either a desktop computer or an iPhone. That's why it was somewhat surprising that Apple ever approved the company's iPhone application to begin with. Even more surprising is that they allowed it to function over 3G when similar products - like Slingbox's SlingPlayer for iPhone, another live TV streaming app - are restricted to Wi-Fi only.

No Live TV for Mac Users Yet

Unfortunately, the Mac version is debuting without the live TV streaming functionality. According to Joe Costello, CEO of Orb Networks, support for live TV support will be added in subsequent versions. In the meantime, however, Mac users can install the Orb software to stream music, photos, videos, home movies and webcam feeds stored in iTunes to their iPhones or to any other internet-connected device including netbooks, notebooks, media players, game consoles and more. All that's needed is the new Mac OS X desktop software (works on OS X Intel 10.5 or later).

Those interested in trying out the new Mac version can grab the installer from here: orb.com/en/download_orb. For now, the Mac software is available in English only.

What are Hulu's Mysterious Plans?

Everyone is looking to Hulu as the future of Internet TV. The joint venture between several major networks, Hulu delivers free, ad-supported programming via online streams - an untested model for long-term profitability, at least when it comes to television.

While consumers have been enjoying the service since its launch in 2007, happily watching free TV shows and movies over their PCs and even their TV sets thanks to Media Center plugins and other unofficial hacks, the company itself is still trying to navigate this new online landscape and effectively monetize their content. Now recent statements by a News Corp exec have people wondering: can Hulu make the ad-supported model work? Or does the company have other plans?

Sponsor

Is Hulu Working?

One of the primary objectives behind Hulu was to put free programming on the Internet to combat the rampant pirating of TV content that took place on sites like the popular file-sharing destination, The Pirate Bay. As iTunes did with music, the idea is to make using Hulu's service easier than having to go out and seek the illegal downloads.

Although iTunes charges for music on a per-file basis, Hulu, too has a business model that makes you pay - except in their case, you're paying with your eyeballs, not your credit card. Using video ads, Hulu has been attempting to monetize its service, but those efforts have been difficult at times. This spring, for instance, Screen Digest analyst Arash Amel claimed that Hulu had only sold about 60% of its ad inventory. "What we've seen is rapid growth in consumption, but the advertising isn't keeping up," he said.

While these figures, if accurate, could be reason for concern, many feel that the profitability of an online video venture of this nature takes time to develop. Eventually, the ad-supported model would work for Hulu as it has worked for numerous other websites and services, supporters claim.

Besides, more recent deals seem to bode well for the site. Case in point, this month the Publicis Groupe announced a mulit-million dollar ad deal that involved targeted advertising to particular Hulu demographics. The deal is said to represent a "significant increase" in spending on Hulu.

Hulu to Charge?

Despite the promises ad deals like this hold, there is still debate as to whether or not Hulu is going to stick to the ad-supported model or try something new. At a conference last week, News Corp. deputy chairman Chase Carey made a pronouncement regarding this point that raised more than a few eyebrows:

"I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content. I think what we need to do is deliver that content to consumers in a way where they will appreciate the value," Carey was quoted as saying by Broadcasting & Cable. "Hulu...needs to evolve to have a meaningful subscription model as part of its business."

This seems to jibe with earlier reports where News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch also hinted at the site's plans to add premium services by saying, "Are we looking at it with a view toward adding subscription services and pay per view? Yes we are."

But "looking at" and "doing" are two very different things - where does Hulu stand now? Has their core philosophy - that is, their belief in the ad-supported model - changed?

According to AdWeek, it has not. In the article, the company claims their ad-supported free service is still the one that "resonates with the largest group of users" and that any additional models would just serve to complement that.

However, when we reached out to Hulu to ask about their plans regarding charging for content, the company wouldn't go on record with any such statement.

Why So Cagey?

Hulu's current decision to clam up could be taken in a few different ways. Perhaps they simply haven't decided what they're going to do about adding new premium services to Hulu and therefore don't want to discuss it at all.

Yet the quote they provided to AdWeek seems innocuous enough - so why not just stick with it? Why now choose to say nothing at all? Maybe they're hoping that with no quote, there is no story, and that will allow them to quell the impending panic among some users who are worried about Hulu's plans to make customers pay. Because some people are so opposed to paying for online content, just hearing reports that Hulu might change to a pay-to-stream model could dissuade them from continuing to use the service.

Then again, it could be that the opposite is true. Hulu wants to keep everyone wondering about what's coming next, generating excitement without providing any details. This means people can speculate wildly and give their opinions, allowing Hulu to tap into that online conversation about what people want before making any official decisions or announcements.

What We Think: Hulu Will Launch Value-Added Services

Despite any official confirmations from the company, we think it's pretty clear that Hulu has intentions to launch value-added services on top of its free, ad-supported model in the coming months. These may include pay-per-view options and some sort of subscription model. However, that subscription model would be there to provide users with value-added services that you couldn't get from the free model alone. Perhaps behind the scenes interviews? Sneak peeks? Actor interviews? Who knows...but the possibilities are endless.

As to why we think that, it comes down to simple math. We've now seen three different statements about these premium services: Carey's recent remarks, Murdoch's quote from earlier this year, and anonymous sources quoted by Dan Rayburn who hinted that Hulu's iPhone app won't launch until "Hulu rolls out a subscription based service."

...And They'll be Tied to the iPhone

The iPhone app, in fact, may be the real secret the company is trying to hide. Imagine if the much-rumored and highly anticipated application was linked to a subscription-based model. That could downright revolutionize the way people watch TV. Providing streaming content over the popular Apple smartphone would easily bring in additional revenue and that new source could quickly outperform the profits made by the ad-supported model.

Yet launching a Hulu iPhone app would be a challenge, as the company is undoubtedly aware. And, of course, Hulu wouldn't want to say anything about it, especially considering how difficult Apple is when it comes to applications that compete with their core services. Apple may not even approve such an application, claiming (rightly so) that it competes with iTunes.

However, Apple may be loosening up on that front, with no small thanks going to the FCC who recently questioned the company's rejection of the Google Voice application - a VoIP dialer that Apple rejected because it competed with what the iPhone does natively. (Apple claims they're "still reviewing" it, but no one really buys that.) Since the FCC's involvement, however, Apple has gone on to approve a streaming music app called Spotify, an application that many had feared would be rejected because it, even more so than Google Voice, competed with iTunes. That leaves us hopeful that a similar application launched by Hulu could also make it through the approval process.

Still, we wouldn't blame Hulu if they wanted to keep that extremely quiet. And that would certainly explain why Hulu won't comment on their plans.

Of course, this is all just speculation at this point, but we hope it turns out to be true.

Spammers Newest Tactic: YouTube Video Spam

Researchers at Kaspersky Lab have recorded a mass mailing of spam emails containing a link to a video advertisement on YouTube. Although in the past, spammers have attempted to lure people into clicking links by claiming the link would display a YouTube video, this is the first case in which the link actually does point to YouTube. In this particular incident, the video in question is a Russian ad promoting industrial real estate.

Sponsor

Two years ago, Kaspersky Lab predicted that YouTube would eventually become a vector for disseminating spam due to its worldwide popularity. However, this is the first time the video-sharing site has been used in this way as far as the researchers can tell.

Says Darya Gudkova, Head of Content Analysis & Research at Kaspersky Lab, "naturally, this type of advertising is more interesting and gets more hits." That's bad news for YouTube because when something works, spammers keep at it... with a vengeance. Once word gets around that video spam is more successful than traditional methods, there's no doubt that it will only increase.

How Would YouTube Handle Video Spam?

So what will YouTube do if video spam becomes a real problem on its network? We would like to think that it would take the offending content down, but that could be easier said than done. After all, this isn't like the copyrighted content that their Content Identification tool can easily identify and remove. That tool works by comparing unique signatures somewhat like a digital "fingerprint" from a content owner's copyrighted file to user uploads across the site. Then, if a match occurs, the copyright holder has the option to have the video taken down.

Identifying a spammer's video would be much harder. Just because someone is using YouTube to sell something, that doesn't necessarily mean it's video "spam." That moniker should only be reserved for videos which are truly undesirable messages where fraudulent activities are underway. The question is, how would YouTube know?

Assuming that video spam takes off, the best thing the site could do to police online content is to include a "report spam" button for videos themselves, as it now has for video comments only.

Of course, for potential victims of video spam, the best thing is not to get duped into visiting YouTube in the first place. Spam filters will simply have to adapt to this new technique. Unfortunately, that will be yet another challenge for Google, which, in addition to owning YouTube, also offers a feature in its webmail product Gmail that automatically embeds any YouTube videos referenced in the email directly in the message itself. That makes it even more convenient for video spammers, who wouldn't have to convince their victims to leave their inbox and launch a new browser window: just click a button on the video embedded below.

YouTube's Promoted Videos are Branching Out and Coming to a Website Near You

YouTube's Promoted Videos - the video ads that often appear to the right of the currently playing video in YouTube and next to search results - are now coming to regular websites as well. Starting today, Promoted Videos will appear in AdSense units through the Google Content Network and will compete with text and image ads in AdSense's ad auctions. Interestingly, AdSense already offers video ads, though it classifies them as 'image ads.' These two video ad units will now run side by side.

Sponsor

The YouTube Promoted Video ad units consist of a thumbnail on the left and three lines of text on the right. Clicking on one of these ads will take users to the YouTube page or channel with the video. Any user can promote ads on YouTube for just a few dollars a day, though most of the promotions on the site are run by larger organizations.

For the time being, these ads are only available in the U.S. and in English, though Google plans to launch them in other regions and languages as well.

Google has obviously struggled to turn YouTube into a profitable business unit. Taking YouTube ads out of the YouTube silo could help Google to win over more advertisers and give current advertisers more reasons to buy ads on YouTube.

Hulu to Add Subscription Services, Pay-per-View, Hints Murdoch

At an investor conference held earlier this week, News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch and NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker revealed that they were looking at new ways to help monetize their joint venture, the video-streaming service Hulu.com. The site, a popular web destination featuring movies and TV shows from content partners including Fox, ABC, Disney, and, of course, NBC Universal, reaches anywhere from 9 million to 42 million users per month, depending who you ask. Although the hosted content is currently ad-supported by way of commercials interspersed into the video streams, the company is interested in exploring other revenue options as well, specifically subscription services and pay-per-view programs.

Sponsor

According to a recent report from Multichannel News, Murdoch was quoted at the conference as saying "Are we looking at it with a view toward adding subscription services and pay per view? Yes we are." However, he was quick to add that "no decisions have been made yet."

NBC's Zucker also hinted at the company's interest in the matter. "Whether there are other ways to monetize Hulu down the road, it is something that we are open to, something we will explore," he said, but like Murdoch, reiterated "there are no plans at this time."

Subscription Services Already in Testing?

While that may be the official company line, other sites are reporting a slightly different variation on this story. The Business of Video blog, for example, says they've been in contact with sources who have confirmed that Hulu is already beta testing a subscription-based service internally and is working out the technical requirements. If that story is to be believed, the offering won't go live anytime this year as Hulu still needs to figure out the details of the business plan.

Whether or not that rumor is true, it wouldn't be surprising to hear that Hulu is working on such a project, given their obvious interest in adding more revenue-generating features to the site. Zucker himself even updated his ongoing conference comment about "analog dollars" being used to chase "digital dimes." (In 2008, it was "digital pennies.") "Certainly by next year the goal should be at least quarters," he joked.

What We Want to See: Premium Channels on Hulu

Subscription services would be a brilliant way to chase those quarters, indeed. Perhaps it could even convince cable-only paid channels like HBO and Showtime to get on board with the venture. They've already tentatively given iTunes a shot, but still seem reluctant to share current episodes in a timely fashion on that service. The reason for the networks' timidity is because their iTunes revenue simply doesn't compare to their cable TV subscription offerings or even their DVD sales. (Ironically, that's probably due to the fact that they don't offer current programs via iTunes!). Instead, they would rather entice consumers to subscribe by tempting them with their backcatalog of programming.

However, if the situation was to change and consumers could subscribe to these channels online for a comparable fee to what the companies generate through cable TV distribution, would they continue to put up such resistance? After all, money is money, who cares where it comes from?

These days, more and more consumers are pinching pennies by cancelling cable subscriptions thanks to the numerous alternatives available online. Obviously, premium channels are getting the boot, too. Imagine if they could have a chance to win back some of those penny-pinching former subscribers by way of an online subscription service. After all, what would you give for piecemeal plans that let you buy a 3-month pass to HBO instead of the all-or-nothing combo packages available via your cable TV provider?

Of course, all this is just wishful thinking on our part, but if Hulu does it right, the possibilities for their new TV distribution network are virtually endless.

BBC To Kill Open Source TV?

The BBC is looking to encode TV listing metadata and employ a compression algorithm to circumvent piracy, ad removal and illegal copying. According to a recent blog post by the EFF's Danny O'Brien, the group wants to get mandatory DRM onto digital TV receivers via a broadcast flag. In other words, a "public service broadcaster" wants to lessen the way we consume media by forcing manufacturers to limit product playing abilities. While open source TV services like Boxee allow users to view programs over home networks regardless of the device, a broadcast flag would force all HDTV receivers to include content protection. For those of us who watch our programs online, this could pose a serious problem.

Says Boxee VP of Marketing Andrew Kippen, "Boxee believes there's a way to deliver entertainment in a way that is consumer-focused, while respecting the rights of content owners. We've built our company around it. People are still buying content off iTunes, and labels / artists are still making money. The way for content owners to make money is to cater to their audience, not to stifle innovation by creating a DRM racket like what's proposed here."

In 2004, the Federal Communications Commission and the Motion Picture Association of America attempted a similar enforcement regarding the US transition from analog to digital television broadcasting. However, by 2005 the broadcast flag was thrown out and regulators argued that the FCC lacked the authority to ask for HD encryption.

New "Internet Meter" will Officially Measure Web TV Audience

Yesterday, Nielsen announced that they will make their new "Internet Meter" available by year's end to measure the online television viewing audience. Until now, this ever-increasing demographic has been left out of U.S. television ratings as Nielsen currently focuses only on live and time-shifted (i.e. DVR) TV viewings. Says the company, the Internet Meter software will be deployed by the end of 2009 to their "People Meter" households - the chosen few whose TV-viewing habits function as the representative sample for measuring a show's success. This new addition to the ratings game is bound to have a major impact on TV monetization efforts as both networks and advertisers will see, officially, how many viewers have tuned in to watch this "2nd screen."

Sponsor

The Internet Changes Everything, TV Just One Example

The internet leaves no business model untouched and unchanged, especially when it comes to media consumption. Whether music, movies, journalism, publishing, or TV, the impact of having high-speed, always-on connectivity has revolutionized how we interact and entertain ourselves. But in the wake of these changes, media companies are left struggling to monetize their efforts, all of sudden discovering that their old business model now looks like a square peg getting hammered into a very round hole.

TV viewing habits are just one example of this change. Not only are companies like Comcast and Time Warner experimenting with on-demand online viewing initiatives, the networks themselves now post their top shows to the web. The major TV networks have featured streaming video on their websites for years. Meanwhile, several networks and studios, including NBC Universal, FOX, and ABC, have banded together to offer Hulu, a popular destination for commercial-supported streaming video.

But putting shows online has its drawbacks, as networks are finding out. Without solid measurement tools, making the shows available on other platforms is, in the short term, hurting the bottom line. In a recent issue of TV Guide magazine, for example, it was noted that networks are specifically facing problems with re-runs. Where before a second airing of an episode from a popular show could make decent money, they're now finding less viewers tuning in thanks to on-demand offerings and online viewings. According to one unnamed network exec, this presents a huge challenge for the networks. "We're not like cable, which has a second revenue stream from subscribers," the exec said. "We need to amortize these very expensive shows."

Measuring the Web TV Audience: A Tricky Prospect

Through anecdotal evidence, we know that more people are watching TV online these days. It comes up in conversation among friends, especially when someone laments how they "forgot to record" a program. They now know they can go online and get caught up. Others find themselves relaxing in front of their laptop's screen nearly as often as they hang out in their living room to watch the big screen. In fact, thanks to the recession, more people than ever have decided to cancel their cable TV subscriptions to save money, realizing that many of their favorite programs are available through alternative methods, including online streams. Need proof? Just look at the Google Insights chart for the term "cancel cable."

Then there are the recent statistics from the nonprofit Conference Board that show how online viewing is on the rise. According to their findings, nearly a quarter of U.S. households now watch TV online, up 20% from last year. New shows are most popular, watched by 43% of viewers followed by 35% of viewers who watch sitcoms, dramas, and comedies. And 90% of the viewings take place at home.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been a good way to effectively monitor and measure the online TV viewing audience. When Nielsen previously reported on Hulu's viewing numbers for instance, Hulu lashed out at the company claiming the numbers were wildly inaccurate.

At the time, Nielsen was using a combination of web beacons to determine when streams started and stopped while also measuring the web use of a panel of 200,000 online users. Hulu themselves, however, preferred to quote numbers from measurement firm comScore, especially since that company reported a much higher reach even as Nielsen noticed a slight decline. The problem here, as we noted at the time, is that online measurements aren't standardized, making it difficult to accurately determine audience counts.

A brand, whether Hulu or any other online video provider, could look at the measurements from major firms like comScore, Compete, or Quantcast, and then pick the company whose estimates were the highest when crafting their "look at us grow!" type press releases. In all honesty, it's probably better that Nielsen gets involved to more objectively report the online traffic through their representative sample methodology. It may not be entirely accurate either, but at least you know that it's coming from an unbiased third party.

The "Internet Meter" Will Deliver Hard Data

At the moment, the Internet Meter software resides in a test group of 375 People Meter households, which has allowed the company to evaluate its capabilities before rolling it out to the remaining group. In addition, the software has been deployed to the company's online panel (as mentioned above) which now measures over 230,000 individuals. Installation of the software will be completed in 2010 but full implementation won't be seen until the following year. If that seems like too slow of a pace, it's only because the company is being very careful, fully knowledgeable of the major impact this technology will have on the TV industry. According to Sara Erichson, President, Media Client Services in North America, Nielsen will not take "any actions that would dilute the reliability of the core television ratings data."

Once the Nielsen data goes live, it will reveal a plethora of information regarding not just viewing numbers but also the demographics of who watches what and when. The information can then be used by advertisers and marketers who want to target niche audiences like the hip crowd who watches sci-fi shows but never stays home on Fridays to view them live on TV when they air. Or the group of people who are too embarrassed to set their DVRs to record "Ugly Betty," but sneak in the guilty pleasure online in their free time. Expect the online ads interspersed with the online content to soon become more precise and more targeted than they are now, thanks to these sorts of reveals. Perhaps the networks will even be able to charge more for ads, once they have numbers to back them up. That would be a good thing for the industry as a whole as well as consumers, since it could lead to more shows being put online. Who knows, maybe one day we'll even be able to purchase online-only cable TV subscriptions, too.

Blip.tv Partners with YouTube, Verizon, Tivo, and Others; Launches All-New Dashboard

New York based video startup, blip.tv made a series of partnership announcements this morning at a live press conference held in the company's offices. Today, blip.tv is expanding their distribution network thanks to new partnerships with YouTube, Vimeo, NBC Local Media New York, and Roku while expanding their current relationships with other current distributors. Along with these deals, the company also revealed their completely revamped content owner dashboard, the central hub for managing media using their service.

Sponsor

So Many New Blip.tv Partnerships!

Dina Kaplan, COO and one of blip.tv's original co-founders, started this morning's press event by noting that the company has been quiet over the past year because they had been working on closing a number of deals and doing the necessary QA work in order to launch the associated new features. Thanks to all the new partnerships announced, including those with YouTube, Vimeo, Roku, and NBC, content creators can send their videos straight to these new sites and services - and even to set-top boxes that allow viewers to watch the content on the big screen TV in their living room. Already, the company distributes to iTunes, AOL Video, MSN Video, Blinkx, Facebook, Twitter, Sony Bravia televisions with Bravia Internet Video Link, TiVo, Verizon FiOS Video On Demand, iPhones and the Internet Archive.

The Roku box, best known for its ability to stream Netflix movies to your television set, currently provides access to over 50,000 TV shows and movies, but according to Jim Funk, VP of Business Development, the company wanted to offer more content to their users - something that will now be possible thanks to blip.tv. With the new SDK designed for Roku's open platform, content creators will be able to launch their own channel on the Roku player. The update that provides this functionality will arrive this fall.

Blip.tv also announced an expanded relationship with the makers of another well-known set-top box - that being the TiVo. Now, content creators will be able to publish their shows directly to the TiVo DVR from their content dashboards.

The video service will help show creators make a splash on broadcast television, too, at least in New York City by way of a new partnership with WNBC, NBC's flagship station. A new show called NY Nonstop will syndicate 5,000 to 10,000 of blip.tv's top shows on a channel dedicated to information and lifestyle.

Perhaps the biggest news, though, out of all the partnerships announced today, is blip.tv's new distribution deal with YouTube. Show creators will be able to send shows directly to this major video portal directly from their blip.tv account. Blip.tv will also be able to serve its own advertisements within the YouTube player itself, providing a revenue share for the content creators.

Other partnerships announced include deals with TubeMogul and FreeWheel, for analytics and advertising, respectively. TubeMogul is providing the audience and engagement data to content creators via the revamped dashboard. They're even able to track the "unofficial" views of unauthorized uploads. FreeWheel will provide optional advertising opportunities for blip.tv users across all of the service's distribution network.

Blip.tv's New Dashboard

Along with the numerous partnership deals, blip.tv also announced their revamped dashboard where content owners upload, manage, and track their videos. Some of the new features - like the "upload to YouTube" option - were added to facilitate interaction with the new distribution partners, while others - like the ability to reorganize episodes - are just great upgrades to the service.

The main screen of the new dashboard features an easy-to-use interface where creators can quickly see the number of views and revenue earned for all their media. It also offers an "activity stream" which displays a list of everything happening with the content, like when a video gets a comment on YouTube, for example.

The process of uploading videos to blip.tv is now easier, too, with a simplified feature that lets you just browse for a video on your computer then send it to the service where it's uploaded in the background while you move on and fill in additional metadata about the video.

Content creators can also better organize their episode list now, thanks to new features that let you re-order shows via drag-and-drop. As soon as you make the change in blip.tv to the order, other lists on the web - such as those on iTunes or in RSS feeds - will update as well. Videos can be batch-edited as well, allowing creators to quickly send multiple videos to YouTube, for example, or any other service they choose.

On the dashboard's analytics page, blip.tv users can track views and revenues on a chart, even adjusting the timeframe that displays via a provided drop-down box. Other information includes an engagement summary (how long people watch the video), referrer list, browsers used, episode details, and more are also shown on this page.

All the changes to the blip.tv dashboard should be live as of today.

As America celebrates its 233rd year of independence from England today, many red-blooded Americans will celebrate the old-fashioned way, by going outdoors, having a picnic or barbecue, decorating everything in red, white and blue and watching or holding their own fireworks displays. But in this rough economy lots of people are choosing to stay close to home. Who really wants to spend lots of money traveling, fighting huge crowds at the day's events and possibly blow off your fingers or light yourself on fire? Luckily we've got you covered.

This is a good day to stay home, watch a baseball game, throw some hotdogs on the grill, eat an apple pie and watch fireworks on your computer. earthTV, an international live TV channel, has cameras located in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., New York City, Niagara Falls and Honolulu and will be broadcasting live streams of fireworks displays beginning at dusk in those cities.
One Million Numbers Strong, Google Voice Prepares for Takeoff

Earlier this year RWW reported that Google had made plans for the telephony service it acquired in July, 2007 called GrandCentral. GrandCentral was reborn as Google Voice, which includes all of GrandCentral's features and much more. Google Voice's free service will allow users to unify all of their phone numbers and transfer calls to all of their devices, convert voice calls to text messages, call multiple parties at once and make discounted international calls.

This week, John Fontana of Network World reported that Google has reserved 1 million phone numbers with communications and information services company Level 3. The company has not announced anything yet, but on the GrandCentral website it says "if you are a GrandCentral user, over the next few days you will be prompted to upgrade to Google Voice". These look like clear signs that it is getting ready to go live any time now, so check those emails and get ready to claim your number, they could go fast.

Google has continued to keep the old GrandCentral service, but has not allowed new users to sign up. Currently only GrandCentral users have access to Google Voice and new numbers are only available for American area codes. The GrandCentral users we spoke with love the service and are thrilled to try Google Voice. Our own Frederic Lardinois says it looks like a winner; "it takes the best features of GrandCentral and adds a number of important and interesting new features...clearly this is one of the most important products that Google has released in the last couple of months".

Judge for yourself. Below are three videos that show how easy it is to place calls, set up a conference call and how the phone calls are routed. There is some speculation about future integration with Android and we are certainly looking forward to that as well.

RWW Adds New Video Account, Channel, & Group on Vimeo

Hey there, sports fans.

We at ReadWriteWeb have had an awesome time gathering video content lately. We love it so much that we plan to do it a lot more. One of the discussions in the back channels has been about where to post our video content, and after considering a whole boatload of factors and testing several services, we've started posting content on our brand-new Vimeo account.

Sponsor

The new page will be the home for content from anyone and everyone on the ReadWriteWeb team, and our social media channel and RWW group pages will aggregate videos we find interesting, amusing, or relevant.

In the past, team members have used YouTube, Viddler, Blip, and a handful of other video services. We loved YouTube's HD, large-file capabilities, but we hated the media player and the YouTube watermark that ended up all over our lovely content. We adored Blip's customizable player, but our longer, in-depth interview videos were a bit too large for that format.

Our Vimeo Plus account will allow us to upload a healthy-to-ridiculous amount of HD video each week, and the speed of uploading and processing for Plus accounts is mind-reelingly fast. We'll also get to make widgets from our content. And we definitely love the very social component of groups and channels. We couldn't be more excited, and we hope to have a long and productive experience with Vimeo.

As a side note, this post isn't meant as an endorsement of Vimeo; different products work better for different purposes, as noted by many Twitter followers last week.

Another factor behind our decision was the surprisingly enthusiastic user response to Vimeo when we conducted an informal Twitter poll. Since you guys like the Vimeo platform and community so much, we hope you'll add us and check out our social media channel and our RWW group. We've added a few videos to the channel and group so far; if you have a video you'd like us to add to our curated content, just email us.

And as always, suggestions on how we can improve our video coverage are welcomed; just leave your erudite ponderings in the comments.

Blonde 2.0 on Social Media for Businesses and Brands

Ayelet Noff, a.k.a. Blonde 2.0, has been a well-regarded, world-traveling social media strategist for more than ten years and is part of Chris Heuer's AdHocnium unagency, as well. While attending Social Media Camp 2009 in New York City, she took some time to talk with us about the mistakes and misunderstandings she's seen countless brands encounter when working with social media.

"Companies in general don't value social media marketing as much as they should," said Noff. "They're afraid of it; they don't understand it; and therefore, they just don't do it. Yet it's the most cost-efficient way of marketing there is."

Sponsor

We also talked to Noff about the infinite measurement possibilities inherent in social media and the kinds of tools marketers should be using to optimize their online campaigns. She also spoke about the occasional difficulty of measuring specific conversion metrics for social media marketing campaigns, and she gave a good word to consultants in the social space.

In light of recent comments on video posts and out of respect for Ms. Noff, commenters are particularly requested to omit the words "hot" and "chick" and other terms of that general timbre from their musings below. Thanks for doing your part to keep ReadWriteWeb classy.

Blip.tv's Mike Hudack on the Evolution and Equalization of Web Video and Television

Blip.tv's CEO, Mike Hudack, chatted with us this afternoon about how online video and television are evolving and informing one another. Revenue models, show length and format, distribution, and consumption are all called into question as the web targets increasingly narrow and engaged niche audiences.

As startups such as Blip.tv continue to grow and partner with old-guard media companies for television distribution, what will happen to the major networks, whose current model creates a scarcity of opportunity for revenue while requiring a "least objectionable programming" approach to content? Will network TV survive? Watch and find out what Hudack thinks.

Web 2.0 Fridays being what they are, the Blip.tv team geared up for beer and Rock Band about 5 minutes after the interview finished. More announcements about "super-secret" developments now in the works (Hudack's terminology) are to be released in the weeks to come.

Sneak Peek: Push Notifications in iPhone OS 3.0

One of the most highly anticipated features coming to the new iPhone OS 3.0 is the ability for applications to deliver push notifications. Although Apple decided not to allow background processes because they drain the battery, the push notification service itself will have a persistent connection to the phone. This will permit apps to alert the user when there are any changes. These alerts will come in three varieties: badges, text alerts, and audio alerts. Text alerts appear like SMS messages, audio alerts play a sound, and badges show up on the app icon itself.

Recently, a video of instant-messaging application BeejiveIM appeared on YouTube, giving us a sneak peek of the push notification feature in action.

Sponsor

In the video, you can see someone using the Beejive application to send instant messages to a friend. After closing the app and even turning off the screen - just like when your iPhone goes to sleep - another instant message came through. The screen lit up and the message appeared just as an SMS text would, except in this case the message title reads "BeejiveIM" which helpfully lets you know which application is sending the alert.

After moving the slider to unlock the phone, the BeejiveIM application appears - you don't have to flip through screens to locate the app and launch it! That's a great, time-saving feature and will be especially handy for those of us whose springboards are full.

If you watch the video through the end, you'll also get a sneak peek at the OS's cut/copy/paste feature, another of which has been desperately needed for some time.

It's been widely speculated that the new iPhone 3.0 OS will make its official debut next week at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference. We're certainly hoping that rumor is true!
